Saturday Insanity event at Atlanta Dragway

SINACK STAYS ON TOP, PAGE CATCHES UP TO WILLIAMS

(Commerce, GA – September 18) Nothing is certain in drag racing, and racers really shook things up in the second to last Saturday Insanity event of 2010.

Points leader Stan Sinack ('69 Dart—Lilburn, GA) worked his way to the 6.50 Index finals, against points runner-up David Brand ('67 Camaro—Covington, GA), who had an unnatural lucky streak to the final round: a broke bye run in the first round, a bye run due to best reaction time in the second round, and a bye run in the third round based on the ladder system. Brand's luck ran out in the finals, when he jumped the tree for a -.005 red light. Sinack launched without distraction for a .029 green light. Brand held down the pedal to cross first with a 6.41 elapsed time at 114.27 mph, but Sinack held to the index with an excellent 6.53 run at 105.12 mph. Sinack thanked "Ed Nalley and Bill Boomhower for their help, getting the car ready and dialing in." By winning the old-fashioned way, Sinack still maintains the top position in the 6.50 Index points. T.J. Thomas ('71 Chevelle—Baldwin, GA) placed third.

Ricky Page ('90 Mustang—Monroe, GA) defended his points ranking for the 7.50 Index, rolling into the finals against Howard Warren ('72 Maverick—Douglasville, GA). Both men were in the game, Page leaving the line first with a .024 light, just before Warren cut a .037 reaction. Warren took the lead, but broke out with a 7.46 elapsed time a 91.18 mph—Page ran dead on in 7.50 seconds at 90.76 mph, with a .03 second margin-of-victory. Page is catching up to points leader and no-show Shane Williams, whose lead decreased from eighty points to thirty. "I wish Shane Williams were here, so I could get some revenge on him!" Page exclaimed, enthused about his shot at the championship. Page thanked "Mike Smith, for helping me, and my wife Angela for putting up with me." Mel Abney ('64 Chevy II—Cumming, GA) and John Norris ('86 Camaro—Royston, GA) ended their night as 6.50 Index semi-finalists.

Eric Smith ('71 Nova—Baldwin, GA) fought his way to the Open Comp finals, staging against Woody Bryant ('82 Camaro—Bowman, GA). Smith's quicker 6.70 dial-in gave Bryant, dialed in at 7.69, the handicap tree. Bryant redlit spectacularly with a -.001 reaction, making Smith's .044 green light the winning ticket. Bryant held out for a 7.74 elapsed time at 89.33 mph, while Smith celebrated his win in 6.73 seconds at 101.78 mph. Smith broke his dry spell, his last win being in 1993: "I've come close a few times, and it's been a good year." Smith thanked "the Lord—he's the one that helped me win the whole thing today" and also credited his family for support. Dwayne Camp ('01 Mustang—Bremen, GA) and Bill Boomhower ('65 Belvedere—Walhalla, SC) ended their evening in the semi-finals.

Tracy Simmons (Danielsville, GA) took his fiery orange '87 Mustang to the Old School finals against Wesley Anglin (Carlton, GA) in a classically red '51 Ford Truck. Simmons was unsure after his car spun in the previous round, but outdid Anglin's .115 green light with a .094 reaction time. Simmons kept it straight for a victorious 5.58 second run at 131.91 mph, before Anglin finished in 5.88 seconds at 117.79 mph. Simmons said, "Old School's a lot more fun, and it's very laid back," surrounded by his fellow racers. "I thank Tony Holliman and Terry Dalton, the crew, my family, God; the whole deal." Bobby McNair ('95 Mustang—West Union, SC) and Reily Vincent Carnes, Jr. ('88 Mustang—Athens, GA) were the Old School semi-finalists.
