Fayetteville Motorsports Park Takes D9 Summit Team Finals Championship

Six more drivers advance to Summit World Finals in Memphis out of Division 9

JULIAN, N.C. (September 30, 2013) – North Carolina’s finest took center stage during the opening day of the Division 9 Summit Racing Equipment Team Finals as six more drivers punched their ticket to the Summit World Finals next month to compete for the Summit SuperSeries World Championship.

Tim Lucas (Top ET), Brian Perkins (Mod ET) and Noah Strickland (Junior Dragster) each won their respective classes on Friday during the opening day of the D9 Summit Team Finals, while runner-up finishers Michael Paschal (Top ET), Jim “Bo” Sells (Mod ET) and Dawson Wiggins (Junior Dragster) also advanced in the Summit SuperSeries championships.

Division 9 Summit SuperSeries Top ET Final

In the team competition Fayetteville Motorsports Park took the overall crown at the Division 9 Summit Team Finals with 67 points, 20 markers ahead of runner-up Greer Dragway. Mooresville Dragway was third with 46 points, followed by Farmington Dragway (44) and Dunn-Benson Dragstrip (41). The remainder of the top 10 were Piedmont Dragway (34), Elk Creek Dragway (22), Coastal Plains Dragway (14) and Rockingham Dragway (12).

In easily the closest battle of the first day of competition, Fayetteville Motorsports Park’s Tim Lucas took the win in an incredibly close race with Farmington Dragway’s Michael Paschal. With the Top ET title on the line, Lucas edged his opponent by the slimmest of margins at the line with a .010 reaction time to a .014, and ran a near dead-on 6.247 elapsed time at 107.75 mph on a 6.24 dial. Paschal ran a 4.634 on a 4.62 in a runner-up effort.

Division 9 Summit SuperSeries Mod ET Final

In Mod ET Dunn-Benson Dragstrip’s Brian Perkins was handed the win when the lone non-North Carolina track representative Jim Sells of Elk Creek lit the red bulb by -.008. Still, Perkins closed out the race with a 6.734 on a 6.70 dial with a .030 reaction time.

Noah Strickland, representing Mooresville Dragway, took the Junior Dragster title over Dunn-Benson Dragstrip’s Dawson Wigging who ran just a tad too quick on his dial. Strickland had a .049 light and ran a 7.916 on a 7.90 dial at 81.65 mph while Wigging had a 9.043 on a 9.08.
Other big winners at the Division 9 Team Finals were Main Event winners Cameron Manuel from Farmington Dragway in Top ET, Jeff Longhany from Fayetteville Motorsports Park in Mod ET and Zachary Houser from Farmington Dragway in Junior Dragster.

NHRA NEWS: PRO MOD SERIES RESULTS SUNDAY FROM ST. LOUIS

SMITH CAPTURES SEASON CROWN, CASTELLANA RACES TO EVENT VICTORY AT AAA INSURANCE NHRA MIDWEST NATIONALS AT GATEWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK

MADISON, Ill. – Veteran racer Rickie Smith took advantage of several early exits by most of his series challengers and captured the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series world championship title Sunday at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.

Smith claimed his first season championship title in the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series when he took the semifinal victory over event top qualifier Jim Laurita. He was ultimately denied the race victory in the final round as Mike Castellana pulled away for the win.

Smith, who says he will retire from the cockpit after this season, was emotional in the media center after being declared the champion with one race remaining on the Pro Mod season schedule. Smith leads second-place Castellana by 142 points and a maximum of 138 points is available to a single racer at each event.

“It’s been a long time since we won a championship, we won seven titles [IHRA Pro Stock and Super Modified] but the last one was in 1989,” said the 59-year-old Smith from King, N.C. “I’ve been doing this for 40 solid years. I drive my own truck and put my own awning up and it’s time to back off, be a crew chief and let these young guys do it. I am tickled to death to pull this deal off. I want to thank IDG for giving me this time to finish my career out. I want to walk away from this thing a champion.”

New York native Castellana outran newly-crowned series champion Smith in the final round to take his first victory of the season and fourth of his career. He powered his Al-Anabi Racing ’68 Camaro to a winning performance of 6.084 seconds at 194.72 mph to finish in front of Smith’s late model IDG Chevy Camaro, which slowed near mid-track.

Castellana advanced to the final round by scoring early round wins over Ron Muenks, Dan Stevenson and Robert Patrick.

Smith’s road to the series crown was opened when title challengers Mike Janis, Von Smith, Kenny Lang and Danny Rowe all lost in the first round and defending world champ Troy Coughlin lost to Laurita in the second round.

The NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series season concludes with the NHRA Toyota Nationals, Oct. 24-27 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

NHRA NEWS: MELLO YELLO SERIES RESULTS SUNDAY FROM ST. LOUIS

FORCE, BROWN, ENDERS-STEVENS AND SMITH RACE TO MELLO YELLO SERIES VICTORIES AT AAA INSURANCE NHRA MIDWEST NATIONALS

MADISON, Ill. – John Force raced to his 136th career victory and moved into position to earn a 16th Funny Car world championship title Sunday at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.

Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Erica Enders-Stevens (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the 21st race of the season and third of six playoff events in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

Force powered to his second win of the season with a final round performance of 4.097 seconds at 310.13 mph in his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang, while defending world champ Jack Beckman trailed in his Valvoline/MTS Dodge Charger with a 4.127 at 309.84.

With the victory, Force, 64, now trails series leader Matt Hagan by six points.

Force defeated rookie Chad Head, longtime rival Ron Capps and teammate Robert Hight along the way to his third win at Gateway. Hagan, the event’s top qualifier who entered the day with a 63-point lead over second place Cruz Pedregon, lost to Beckman in the second round. Pedregon also went out early with a first round exit, which opened the door for Force to move to the top of the points order.

“We’ve got a [points] race now, and I’m excited,” Force said. “I had a good day. The most important thing for me was to see the crowd. They filled the bleachers. To win a championship you’ve gotta live it every day, and I’m not chasing a championship. I’ve been chasing Corporate America and taking care of our sponsors. My wife [Laurie] set me straight this morning, ‘she said, what you need to do is win. We need John Force to get back to winning races.’ Hey, I can do that. I ain’t going to say I will win another race or a championship, but I’ll be in the fight with these kids.”

The runner-up finish put the still-winless Beckman in third place in the standings, 44 back of Hagan. Robert Hight is fourth overall, 48 points back in his Auto Club Mustang. Two-time champ Pedregon dropped to fifth, 83 behind Hagan.

In Top Fuel, Brown claimed his third victory of the season and 40th of his career by defeating Khalid alBalooshi in the final round. Brown covered the distance in 3.788 at 323.97 in his Toyota/Matco Tools dragster to take his second consecutive win at this track, and third overall. Runner-up alBalooshi finished in 3.833 at 319.98 in his Al-Anabi Racing dragster.

Brown defeated Billy Torrence, Clay Millican and seven-time champ Tony Schumacher to advance to the final round. The effort ended a mini-slump for the defending world champion, who has not been in a final round since he won in Atlanta in early May. Since then he’s posted eight first round losses and a DNQ at the Countdown playoff opener in Charlotte.

“It’s no secret we’ve been struggling a lot more than what we had hoped to, and we had hoped we could have had a turnaround a little sooner, but we’re not going to go out without a fight,” Brown said. “The class is at an all-time high where everybody is running strong, but we just want to get back in the groove because it’s not going to be over until it’s over.”

Brown moved to sixth in the standings with the victory and now trails series leader Shawn Langdon by 102 points. Doug Kalitta and Spencer Massey, who both lost in the first round, are second and third, 33 and 35 points back respectively. Morgan Lucas is fourth overall, 45 points back and Schumacher is fifth.

“Our goal from here on out is to just go and race like it’s the last race out here, and we’re going to push really hard and hopefully go qualify top half again next weekend, and we’re just going to take it one round at a time,” Brown said. “If the next two races in a row we can creep up some points here and there, we can go into that last race in Pomona with a shot. That’s all we want is to have a shot, and it’s still in our scopes, so we’re not going to let that go, and we’re going to give it everything we’ve got.”

In Pro Stock, Enders-Stevens raced to her second consecutive victory at this event and scored the sixth win of her career by holding off Mike Edwards in the final round. Enders-Stevens used a reaction time advantage to claim her second win of the season, powering her Husky Liners Chevy Camaro to a run of 6.540 at 211.23 to finish in front of the quicker, but losing Interstate Batteries/I Am Second Camaro of Edwards, which posted a 6.532 at 212.36.

“This was a great day,” said Enders-Stevens, who beat Deric Kramer, Shane Gray and Rickie Jones to advance to the final round. “We had a consistent car in qualifying and a consistent car today. My guys showed their stuff, and we were able to get down the track when some other guys didn’t. I love St. Louis.”

Enders-Stevens, who missed six of the last eight races in the regular season due to lack of sponsorship, moves into fourth place in the points order with the victory, 60 back of Edwards, who regained the series lead. Jeg Coughlin is second overall, and Jason Line is third.

“This helped validate the faith that [new sponsor] Husky Liners had in me,” Enders-Stevens said. “They are pleased with what we’ve done, and that’s big because this deal only came together four days before the first [Countdown race] in Charlotte. Now we’re up to fourth in points, and I think we’re three rounds out of the lead, and we’re going to do our best to keep winning. This was a make-or-break weekend because if we had exited first or second round, the championship would have been out of reach. Now, the way we see it, this is our championship, and they’re going to have to take it from us.”

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Smith rode to his second victory of the season and moved into the series lead by outrunning LE Tonglet in the final round. Smith scored his 15th win of his career and second at this track with a performance of 6.887 at 194.52 on his Viper Motorcycle Company Buell, while Tonglet trailed with a 6.950 at 192.14 on his Nitro Fish Suzuki.

Smith, who finally grabbed another Wally after posting three consecutive runner-up finishes in his last three final round appearances, defeated 71-year-old Joe DeSantis, defending world champ Eddie Krawiec and Countdown rival Michael Ray on his way to the final.

“This was important because I’ve messed up so much here lately in final rounds,” Smith said.  “I’ve had the best bike and gave it up. It has been one thing after another. I could have won five or six races this year. This time, I tried not to mess up. When we got to the final, I knew we had a better bike, and I took the win and the points lead. Now we just need to see what happens the rest of the year.”

Smith now holds a 75-point lead over both Lucas Oil Buell riders Hector Arana Sr. and Hector Arana Jr., who are tied for second place. Smith says he is lucky to be in this position, considering he nearly didn’t get to race today after falling ill last night.

“I got sick last night with food poisoning, and I had an IV in me,” Smith said. “I have to say thanks to the doctors here or I wouldn’t be here today. I was hurting pretty bad. My blood pressure was really low, and they told me that if it didn’t improve, I wasn’t going to race today. I drank water all night, and at 9 a.m., they checked me again, and I felt a lot better. I was lucky I even got to race, and now I made it to the winner’s circle.”

The NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship continues Oct. 3-6 with the Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway, Reading, Pa.

NHRA NEWS: MELLO YELLO SERIES RESULTS SATURDAY FROM ST. LOUIS

HAGAN, LANGDON, JOHNSON AND ARANA SR. EARN NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS AT AAA INSURANCE NHRA MIDWEST NATIONALS

MADISON, Ill. – Funny Car points leader Matt Hagan earned the No. 1 qualifying position Saturday at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.

Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Sr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also will lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations as No. 1 qualifiers at the 21st race of the season and the third of six playoff races in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

Hagan’s stellar season continued as his Friday track record performance of 4.001 seconds at 320.20 mph in his Magneti Marelli/Rocky Boots Dodge Charger gave the 2011 world champ his fifth No. 1 qualifying position of the season and the 15th of his career.

“I feel like yesterday was one of those deals where we set ourselves up where we needed to, and then today, you come out and try to work on race-day setup,” said Hagan, who will meet second-generation driver Daniel Wilkerson in the first round. “Today we missed a little bit early when it was hot out, and then it was just a little bit weak on the second session, but I’ve got all the confidence in the world in [crew chief] Dickie Venables. He’s going to do a great job tomorrow, and we’re going to turn four win lights on and hold up the trophy at the end of the day.”

During the four rounds of qualifying, Hagan increased his series lead from 51 to 63 over second place Cruz Pedregon, who qualified 10th and will meet local favorite Tim Wilkerson in a titan first round Countdown match up.

“Every lap counts,” said Hagan. “I mean, you’re looking at small points. You’re trying to pick up three points every time you go down the racetrack. My mentality is to just come out here and drive my race car and do what we know how to do and go down the racetrack and make it into a phenomenal weekend.”

Robert Hight will start second in his Auto Club Ford Mustang with his 4.022 at 315.64 and 15-time champ John Force qualified third with a 4.023 at 313.66 in his Castrol GTX Mustang. Force was quickest and second-quickest on Saturday, while his daughter Courtney, who will race Tony Pedregon in the opening round, was quickest in the last session with a 4.037 and second-quickest in the first at the controls of her Traxxas Mustang.

In Top Fuel, no one improved on Langdon’s 3.761 at 326.40 from Friday either, so the Al-Anabi Racing driver used that effort to score his sixth No. 1 of the season, second in a row in the Countdown and 12th of his career. He will race Troy Buff in the opening round.

“The Al-Anabi team did an excellent job preparing the car for the four qualifying runs this weekend,” Langdon said. “The last run got a little bit overaggressive, but we’re basically trying to go out there and trying to throw down to see what exactly it will hold. We were a little on the conservative side on the first three runs, but just trying to race smart and get those bonus points and get that points lead. We were able to accomplish that and get the No. 1 qualifier in the process and put ourselves in a good position for tomorrow."

With his two quick times from Friday and a second-best lap on Saturday, Langdon extended his Countdown lead to 13 points over second place Doug Kalitta. Spencer Massey, who qualified 14th, is 15 points back in third.

“Every point counts, so it’s just little by little, one round at a time, and they’ll add up in the end,” said Langdon, who entered the race tied at the top with Kalitta, and Massey was only two back in third. “It’s just don’t beat ourselves, that’s the biggest thing. We just have to race smart. You can’t go up there and try to do something that you’re really not accustomed to or go up there and try new things. It’s just keep doing what you’re doing and just make the best decision possible and just race smart for the conditions.”

Tony Schumacher, who was second-quickest in the final session, will start second in his U.S. Army dragster with his Friday run of 3.782 at a track record speed of 327.74. Clay Millican, the only Countdown driver in Top Fuel yet to win a race this season, qualified third in his Parts-Plus dragster with his Friday effort of 3.786 at 322.27.

Countdown contender Steve Torrence used a Hail Mary run of 3.818 seconds to make the field in dramatic fashion on his final attempt Saturday, and his effort ended up being the quickest run of the session, which moved him to ninth in the field. He will face David Grubnic in the first round.

A mega first-round Top Fuel pairing that will have huge points implications will feature the first two Countdown race winners going head-to-head, as Charlotte winner Morgan Lucas will meet Dallas winner Kalitta.

In Pro Stock, Johnson earned his third top qualifying position of the season and 31st of his career with his Friday run of 6.512 at 212.29 in his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger. He will race Lucas Oil Ford Mustang driver Larry Morgan in the opening round.

“The conditions were great today and they did a really good job with the track,” Johnson said. “We gained 10 points on the frontrunners during qualifying and I hope we can take our Express Lube Dodge to the final and make up some more ground. I was not surprised to see our time from last night hold up because the conditions just weren't there. We have a really good combination so we just decided to work on our race-day set up. We treated today as a chance to test and tune for tomorrow.”

V. Gaines was second in his Kendall Oil Avenger with a 6.526 at 211.96 and Jeg Coughlin, who earned enough bonus points to move into a tie atop the series standings with Jason Line, will start third in his JEGS.com/Mopar Avenger.

Co-leader Line and regular season top seed Mike Edwards, currently third in points, will meet in a another blockbuster Countdown first-round showdown. Rodger Brogdon was the only Countdown qualifier who failed to make the 16-car field for eliminations.

Arana Sr. raced to his third No. 1 qualifying position of the season and 24th of his career in Pro Stock Motorcycle, speeding to a track record performance of 6.796 at 198.58 on his Lucas Oil Products Buell. The 2009 world champ will face Mike Berry in the opening round.

"This is just what our team needed," said Arana Sr., who moved to third in points with the qualifying effort, 20 behind points leader and son Hector Arana Jr. "We still haven’t found the sweet spot, but we’re getting better.”

Michael Ray qualified second with a 6.830 at 196.99 on his Sovereign-Star Racing Buell and the series second-place rider Matt Smith, who cut Arana Jr.’s lead to five points during qualifying, will start third on his Viper Motorcycle Company Buell with a 6.850 at 196.30. Arana Jr. qualified seventh on his Lucas Oil Buell and will race Jerry Savoie in the first round.
