Tony Positano pleased with first year in Quick 32 Sportsman Series

Cayuga/TMP Top Dragster winner plans to return for 2010 season
TORONTO, ONTARIO (November 27, 2009) - “Wow. What an exciting season. We have really enjoyed it.”
Top Dragster driver Tony Positano joined the ranks of the newly-formed Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts in 2009 after competing locally in Top Dragster competition for the past two seasons. The driver and team owner of the Mike Bos Slip Joint Dragster said the series was the right program at the right time for competitors such as him.
“This is a fantastic series,” noted Positano. “I’m proud to be a part of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series. It’s what we needed in Ontario.”
Positano missed the series opener at the Cayuga Dragway at TMP, but raced in the remaining five events. The highlight of his season was capturing the Top Dragster final during the September 19 event held at Cayuga.
Qualifying 14th in the 16-car field, Positano was able to eliminate number one qualifier Michael Hinbest of Orangeville, Ontario to take the Top Dragster title.
“We were surprised but certainly pleased we won,” he said. “It goes to show that you have to be there to play and win.”
Powered by a Stefko Racing Engines built 565-cubic inch engine, and fueled with a Magna Fuel 500 Pump with Pro Series 1250 Carb, the 245-inch wheelbase dragster also utilizes a Ron Shilling Powerglide.
Kelly Sams provides the Crew Chief duties, and the team’s sponsors include Lucas Oil and Vinylbilt Windows and Doors.Positano mentioned another couple of highlights for the season, including a loss to fellow Quick 32 racer Michael Kalin of Youngstown, NY, at one race and then beating him at the next event and winning the Grudge Match race over the Labor Day weekend at the Grand Bend Motorplex over the Pontiac GTO doorcar of Michael Campolucci.
“That was quite a show, and quite a race,” he remarked about the win over Campolucci.
Positano mentioned he has no big plans for his car for 2010, other than a freshening-up with new Wiseco Pistons and trying to loose some weight on the car.
Positano also mentioned he wanted to thank several competitors:
“The Spiering family makes a great show at the races,” he said. “Carl is always available for advice, and Lisa is a great driver.
“I want to thank the hospitality of Darryl and Carol McMillen,” he added, “for their Friday night get-togethers at the track.
”I also want to thank my sponsors, including Steve Snowden of Lucas Oil Canada, for having faith in our race team, and Vinylbilt Windows and Doors, which have given me the opportunity to pursue our love and passion.
“And thanks the Quick 32 Sportsman Series sponsors, to Ron Shilling for his continued professional support, and to Kelly, my Crew Chief, for her commitment to a safe and successful race operation.” Positano will return next year.
“The Quick 32 program gave us a purpose, a goal,” he said. “It also brought a great group of people together with a common pastime. We look forward to another rewarding and successful season in 2010.”
Tony Positano was the winner of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series Wiseco Piston Award for 2009.

About the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts:
The Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, www.Quick32.ca, of drag racing was started early in 2009 as an alternative for high-horsepower Sportsman-class teams to compete on a regular basis.
For 2009, dates included Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario, starting with the season opener on May 16 and 17 and the season-closer “Double Header” on September 19 and 20, and the South-western Ontario track of the Grand Bend Motorplex on June 27 and 28, the Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts August 15 and 16 and the Thunder by the Beach Weekend September 5 and 6.
With 32-car qualified fields comprised of the 16 quickest open wheeled cars (Top Dragster) and the 16 quickest door cars (Top Sportsman), the Quick 32 Sportsman Series featured the best in ET-style, dial-in drag racing, competing on a Sportsman ladder and pit door-slammers against dragsters in every race day final.
Competitors in this Ontario-based series must comply with the IHRA Top Dragster and Top Sportsman Safety rules and regulations, and the maximum dial-in will be 7.95 seconds for the quarter-mile.
This new venture provided $3000 to win for each event and $5000 for the annual Championship Point Award Series champion, payouts very popular with competitors and will provide large fields of race cars.
The Quick 32 Sportsman Series is committed in providing a professional atmosphere for its teams. It will also provide solid media and logistic support to ensure it becomes one of the most popular drag race series running Top Sportsman and Top Dragster race cars.
The Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts competed several times with the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA), www.PMRA.ca, as well as selected special events, offering fans a great show of drag racing.

Fans will be able to vote on NHRA.com; winner will be announced Feb. 14, 2010
GLENDORA, Calif. (Nov. 25, 2009) — Since 1961, the legendary NHRA Winternationals has been thrilling NHRA race fans with the unveiling of innovative race cars, incredible rookie debuts, unprecedented firsts, and dramatic finishes that have provided a supercharged launch to NHRA seasons for five decades.
To help salute the milestone 50th anniversary Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals, coming to Auto Club Raceway at Pomona Feb. 11-14, NHRA fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite Winternationals moment of the past 49 years in a special month-long poll on NHRA.com.
Voting begins today at 5:30 p.m. ET on NHRA.com and will continue through to midnight, Dec. 31.
A panel of experts selected the top 25 moments in Winternationals history from which to choose. From the first NHRA victories of quarter-mile icons Don Garlits, Don Prudhomme, and Bill Jenkins or Shirley Shahan's breakthrough as the first woman to win a major NHRA event to the debut of "Big Daddy's" revolutionary rear-engined Top Fueler, the flying Hawaiian Funny Car, the Freight Train, Eddie Hill's Top Fuel blowover and more, they're all here.
Moments 6 through 25 will be revealed in reverse order on NHRA.com in the weeks before the 2010 event, and the top five will be announced during race week, culminating with the unveiling of the top moment during Sunday’s pre-race festivities at the 50th annual event.

Drag Racing - The World's Fastest Sport, now available
New drag racing book covers entire spectrum of the sport
HAMILTON, ONTARIO (November 23, 2009) – It has been two years in the making, but Drag Racing - The World’s Fastest Sport is now available for fans of this popular form of auto racing.
The newly-released hardcover book encompasses all facets of drag racing, from a strong segment on the history of the sport to today’s top drivers in the NHRA and IHRA. There is a section on all car classes, from Stockers to Top Fuelers, a drag racing “101” primer which delves into the mechanics of the sport, and chapters devoted to women in the sport and legends of the sport. The book is profusely illustrated with exciting and colorful photographs. The book also employs a bevy of illustrations of drag racing cars and other items related to the sport presented in a realistic fashion.
“This book has truly been a labor of love for me,” said Miller, who has written several other books on auto racing. “When I decided to attempt this book, I noticed there were many books on the sport available, but none to offer the scope that this book contains.
“While most drag racing books are about a personality, or a class of cars,” he continued, “this book covers the whole spectrum of the sport, so a novice would have a good understanding of drag racing after reading it.”
For Miller, who writes about motorsports for a daily newspaper, this is his latest racing book. His other motorsports works include three books on NASCAR, and a child’s book on auto racing.

SHEIKH KHALID AL THANI SCORES RUNNER UP FINISH IN PRO EXTREME DEBUT
(11-20-09) DOHA, Qatar – Having only the four allotted qualifying sessions for Round 1 of the Arabian Drag Racing League at the Qatar Race Club to get comfortable in his new Pro Extreme ’68 Camaro, HH Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Thani put on a tremendous driving display during the elimination rounds of the season-opening event.
Sheikh Khalid, who qualified 3rd in the field with a 3.859-second blast at 199.75mph, had to face the Qatar Race Club’s own Bader Alhi in the Todd Tutterow-tuned ’06 Ford Mustang in the opening round of action. Despite the game opponent in the other lane, the Sheikh maintained a level of collectiveness and composure that is rarely seen in a rookie driver and took out his veteran counterpart, setting up a final round against the Barwa Racing ’68 Camaro driven by 2008 Arabian Drag Racing League world champion, Von Smith.
Smith, who put the Howard Moon-tuned Pro Extreme Camaro on the pole with a 3.735 at 205.22mph, is undeniably the man to beat when it comes to drag racing in the Arabian Gulf Region, but Sheikh Khalid remained confident that his first outing as a Pro Extreme driver could very well result in his first career victory.
“Frank [Manzo, crew chief] has made me so comfortable over the course of the race, that it was easy to be confident going into our first final round together,” said Sheikh Khalid, checking in from his home in Doha. “He has such an easy going personality, and he is always teaching, so we continued to make big progress every time we took to the track.”
He continued, “With Tim [McAmis] taking care of the car and Frank the motor, it’s just been a dream to drive. These guys have this Al-Anabi Racing Camaro dialed-in, and it’s let me really focus on cutting a light and doing my job as the driver.”
No questioning his concentration, as Sheikh Khalid used a 19-thousands-of-a-second starting line advantage to hold Smith off until about half-track when the hard charging Barwa Camaro slipped by, taking the win with a 3.758/205.69mph combination to His Highness’ 3.860-second, 198.06mph effort.
“I really wanted to leave on Von,” said Sheikh Khalid. “I managed to pull it off, but they got the best of us on the other end. It was a great showing for this entire organization, though, and I couldn’t be happier to see Von and Howard win Round 1 at the QRC. This was a stellar weekend, and for our newest sponsor, Barwa, to see the winner’s circle in their first outing is incredible.”
Frank Manzo, who has earned almost innumerable wins in the NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car category, had nothing but good things to say about his new driver.
“Sheikh is a tuner’s driver,” said Manzo, direct from the pits of the state-of-the-art Qatar Race Club. “He listens and makes the adjustments that need to be made. I couldn’t ask for more. We would have loved to get this first win together, but we’ll give it another shot here in a few weeks during Round 2.”

2009 Atlanta Dragway Summit Series awards ceremony coverage
ATLANTA DRAGWAY BANQUET HONORS MANY FIRST-TIME CHAMPIONS
By Amy Glover
Reuniting racers one last time for the 2009 season, the annual Atlanta Dragway Summit Series awards ceremony took place Nov. 21 at The American Legion post 127.
It didn’t take long to get the party started; attendees exchanged non-stop chatter over cake and hot wings. The casual atmosphere of the banquet preserved the true spirit of racing.
General manager Ray Wilkings began the ceremony with credit to Atlanta Dragway’s sponsors: VP Racing Fuels, Coca Cola, and the people at Year One, as well as all the other sponsors that keep the track going. Wilkings asked that everyone support the sponsors that support the track, and finally thanked everyone that “comes and races with us.” He also noted, “There’s a gathering of racers and there’s rain predicted tonight,” a running joke about the inclement weather that often affects the points season.
Wilkings announced that the new Saturday Insanity series would continue on in the 2010 season, noting that there would be an Open Wheel class available for the more powerful rides.
With modest beginnings, the Saturday Insanity series has given racers a new way to have some fast fun, and the top points earners have procured the honorable recognition of being among the first to place in the series.
In the 7.50 Index class, Stephen Rhoads & Ricky Page tied for third place, and Randall Roop held the runner-up position. John Norris, a Summit series regular, came out on top with 200 points total.
The 6.50 Index had no room for ties; T.J. Thomas placed third, Matt Ward earned the silver, and Joe Rampley got the gold with 170 points.
The Open Comp (Full-Bodied) class included Jimmy Mason in third, Travis Bryant and Bill Boomhower tying for second place, and Charlie McCulloch topping the ranks with a 40 point lead, having dominated the competition with two wins.
The special awards segment of the banquet recognized Atlanta Dragway racers and staff for their hard work beyond the starting line. ‘Most Improved Driver’ went to John Norris, who placed in both the Saturday Insanity series and the Summit series. Joe Haddon won ‘Most Inspirational Driver,’ for his friendship and support throughout the year. The ‘Sportsmanship Award’ went to Howard Warren, and Allen Long was recognized as the ‘High School Champion.’ Amy Gunter won ‘Employee of the Year,’ earning 100 percent of the award with 30 years of dedication towards the track.
Then came the aesthetic awards, where the cars were the stars. Paul Cavanaugh was recognized for having the best-looking motorcycle, an ’02 Hayabusa. Mel Abney’s dark blue ’67 Camaro was voted the best-looking Sportsman car. Justin Buchanan’s charcoal ’72 Nova won best-looking Pro car, and Stan Sinack’s striking red ’69 Dart won best-looking car of Super Pro.
The final portion of the awards ceremony was dedicated to the champions of the top four classes: Motorcycle, Sportsman, Pro, and Super Pro. Each champion represented the top of their class, running the most successful rounds out of the pool of competition.
Jay “Bird” Rhyne claimed his sixth Motorcycle championship, donning his new embroidered coat over his fleece winner’s jacket from ’98. Upon handing over the trophy, Wilkings remarked, “like he needs another jacket,” handing over the microphone to the “man of few words,” who took the lead by a staggering 190 points. Rhyne thanked “all the guys and girls who work at Atlanta Dragway, I appreciate it.” Surprisingly, he had no more to say. Friend and fellow competitor Tim Sutton lightheartedly warned us that it would soon “be the end of an era,” though Rhyne is ready and anxious for the next season to begin.
J.D. “Doc” Burford won the Sportsman championship, his very first after only three years of racing. The practicing medicine man thanked “all the Atlanta Dragway crew with two jobs – one during the week, and one on the weekend.” He also thanked his “fellow competitors, because we all have to show up to make it a good race.” Burford held the top position against friend Mel Abney, who was close behind all season. There’s a doctor in the House of Speed, and he’s here to stay.
Chad Brewer took home his first Pro championship. Brewer never missed a points race this season, winning a handful that sent him to the top. As always, Brewer grinned and said, “I’ve got to thank the Mayor of Hickory Flat” because “he always slapped me back into it.” He also gave a nod to the staff, “You guys did a hell of a job.” Brewer plans to stick to Pro after a solid, successful season.
Jeremy Hancock won the Super Pro championship, along with the most heartwarming speech of the night. He credited his first Super Pro title to God “for everything,” thanked his “wife, because she lets me race and doesn’t complain,” and thanked his mother-in-law Paula “because she lets me borrow money when I need it.” He then most sincerely thanked his dad: “He’s the real champ, and I hope I can be half the dad he is.” Hancock dedicated his triumph to the late Buford Heavy, and gave the trophy to Heavy’s wife Beverly. Hancock also proved his fighting spirit at the Bracket Finals, placing second in the Division 2 race.
Wilkings closed the ceremony by announcing some news regarding the 2010 season. The schedule will be posted at the end of the year, with 31 additional events – due to the success of Fast Friday, there will now be ‘Tuesday Tune-ups,’ a midweek opportunity for the curious car owner or the travelling racer. Also, the “Night of Fire” will become an all-star race, requiring competitors to hold rank in the points standings to compete at the popular event. Wilkings thanked everyone for coming, congratulated the winners, and expressed a common wish for the next season: “Maybe we’ll get some good weather next year.”
