Rocky Reports: More from the P&E Shop night...

Here's a pic from the "loft" of the shop. We spent part of the winter redoing the shop, you can see the "mezzanine" area built to hold some of the cars that are finished. You can also see the now hoist we made to lift the funny car body off the chassis so we can service the funny car easier.

Rocky Reports: Pirrone & Ellershaw Race Team Shop Night.

Each Wednesday night we have a night where our crew gets together to work on the cars and more importantly have some fun. Some of these "work nights" become a lot more fun then work! lol  This past Wednesday night was one of them. We invited the members of the local street rod club, the Philadelphia Modifiers to stop down. Between them and our normal crew we had close to forty people! We fired up the cars we had ready and polished off a few cases of beers and a half dozen pizzas..! We got zero actual work done, but we sure did have FUN..! lol  Here's a pic...

(Feb. 15, 2012) — NHRA officials announced today two significant changes to the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series schedule for 2012.  NHRA will add a Nostalgia Top Fuel event at Spokane County Raceway and also has scheduled the season’s final event for groups 1 & 2 to be hosted by Auto Club Famoso Raceway near Bakersfield, Calif.

Spokane County Raceway will host the second event for the Top Fuel class, June 22-24, bringing the total number of events for the class to five. The class, and the series kick off the season at the famed March Meet at Auto Club Famoso Raceway, March 1-4, with a new four-day format.  The new event in Airway Heights, Wash., will be held in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Spokane County Raceway.

For the second year in a row, Auto Club Famoso Raceway also will play host to the season-ending event for Groups 1 & 2 of the series, Oct. 5-7, two weeks prior to the series-ending California Hot Rod Reunion presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California produced by and benefiting the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum.

Goodguys Racing Team Back on Track This Weekend in Vegas

Pleasanton, CA - With the thrill and excitement of a brand new drag racing season upon us, the Goodguys Racing Team led by Marc Meadors and the “Pure Hell2” ’69 Camaro Pro Mod machine are locked, loaded and ready for a run at the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association series title. Outfitted with a trick new DMPE Mark II carbon injector and a top secret hi-end torque converter, the team is confident they can take the flaming ’69 Camaro into battle and eclipse last year’s second place points finish in WCOPMA action.

This weekend, the team will venture south from their Pleasanton, California home base to the PSCA Ford Racing “Record Breaker Nationals” at the Strip @ Las Vegas Motor Speedway to lock horns with the competition in the Pro Street division. Although not their primary racing circuit, it was at last fall’s PSCA Street Car Supernationals @ the Strip Meadors qualified #2 in a national field of the country’s best racers running 5.92 @ 246mph. In fact, every run the Pure Hell2 ’69 Camaro made at the Supernationals in November was a sub-six second effort. Meadors asserts “he’s out to avenge the quarter final red light that took me out. I could have easily won that race” he grinned.

Joining his father on track this weekend will be 9 year old Grant Meadors, who makes his competition debut in the PSCA’s Junior Dragster division. The third generation racer will be behind the butterfly of his new alcohol powered Mike Boss-built Junior Dragster.

“We’re ready for the family weekend of competition,” said the elder Meadors. “It’s been a good winter back in the shop. We’re excited about the new parts and pieces on the car and see no reason why we can’t squeeze the 5.70 zone on a routine basis provided with optimum conditions. And little Grant is really stoked to be racing in his first-ever event. No matter the outcome, it will be good to be back on track after a long winter break.”

The Goodguys Racing Team will post photos, qualifying and elimination updates and more on their Facebook page throughout the weekend. To follow along visit:

New power for Dan Flanigan and his Firebird Top Sportsman car will up the ante in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series

"We're going to have 300 more horsepower. You have to run fast to qualify in this Series"

BUFFALO, NEW YORK (February, 15, 2012)  – A new powerplant under the hood of Dan Flanigan's 2002 Firebird Top Sportsman car should provide some more force for him when he takes to the track for the 2012 Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts season.

"I'm super excited," said Flanigan about the new aluminum 665-cubic inch engine. "We're going to have 300 more horsepower. You have to run fast to qualify in this series."

Flanigan only raced three times last year in Quick 32 Sportsman Series competition, and was a quarter-round finalist in the second event, the Xtreme Mayhem Nationals at Cayuga Dragway. He said that the car never performed as expected last year, and is looking for more success in 2012.

"We never got the combination right last year," he said. "With this new Jan-Cen engine, we should be ready to go."

He also noted that Vito Antonicelli, who built the Firebird door-slammer, has reworked a major portion of the car's rear end and suspension over the off-season, and Flanigan said this should help for the upcoming season.

A pair of 1150 Dominator carburetors using alcohol sit atop the new engine, and a Nitrous Oxide System is also employed. A Competition Transmissions two-speed Powerglide unit sits behind the big engine, and Flanigan is expecting times in the low seven-second range with speeds of up to 180 mph.

Sam Christian will crew chief on the Flanigan Racing Team entry and assisting will be Jim Flanigan, John Flanigan, Mary Lisa, Molly and Audrey Flanigan. Sponsorship is provided by NOCO Energy Corporation, a family-owned energy company based in Western New York which services several US states.

NOCO also has a strong presence in Canada with the NOCO Lubricants Company, which distributes Esso and Mobil lubricants also with its own brand in Ontario, and provides marketing exposure on both sides of the border that ties in well with Flanigan's racing in Canada and the US.

"I can't thank Jim and Mike Newman at NOCO enough for their support," said Flanigan. "They are great supporters of the sport."

Flanigan plans to run more events this year, and said he will be ready for opening day.

"I'm really looking forward to the new season, and going to a race in Michigan will be great. I can't wait."

The Quick 32 Sportsman Series kicks off its 2012 season with the Victoria Day Weekend Challenge May 18-20 at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park, the first of six events.

The Quick 32 Sportsman Series' companion series, the Pro Modified Racing Association, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series, will also be at Cayuga for this event.

The Quick 32 Sportsman Series, www.Quick32.ca will race six times in 2012. The series also competes with its two companion series, the Pro Modified Racing Association, www.PMRA.ca and the Pro Bike & Sled Series, www.PBSS.ca offering a solid and full package of drag racing action.

Oliver beat out fellow Southern California local Jay Payne, Claremont, Calif., in the final of Top Alcohol Funny Car.  Payne won the 2011 season final here at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona but did not have enough for Oliver who covered the quarter mile in 5.531 seconds at 258.67 mph to Payne’s 5.548, 260.36.  The win put Oliver’s owner Randy Goodwin in his first Pomona winner’s circle after attending one of his first drag races here 42 years ago.  In addition to Payne who finished No. 3 last year, Oliver beat the No. 2 finisher in 2011 Tony Bartone in his semifinal match up.

Garden Grove, Calif., racer Greg Ventura knocked out Jimmy Lewis for the Super Gas title in his ’66 Nova running 9.926 seconds at 141.12 mph while former Lucas Oil world champion Dan Fletcher, Churchville, N.Y., won in the Comp Eliminator category against Randy Jones, Monarch Beach, Calif.

Joining in on the winner’s circle celebration were Mike Cotton, Broken Arrow, Okla., in Super Stock over Jody Lang, Puyallup, Wash; Brad Burton, Kirkland, Wash., who beat Don Keen, Palmdale, Calif., in Stock; and Longmont, Colo., racer Kevin Wright, defeating Tommy Phillips, Forney, Texas, in Super Comp.

The Lucas Oil Series heads to Phoenix this weekend and Firebird International Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals.

Palm Beach International Raceway Hosting the Palm Beach Grand Prix Feb. 17-19, 2012

Jupiter, Fla. (February 9, 2012) – The Palm Beach Grand Prix returns for its second year with three full days of racing at Palm Beach International Raceway the weekend of February 17 through 19. At the facility-wide motorsports event spectators can enjoy up-close action at various events from racing to car shows throughout the weekend.

The Palm Beach Grand Prix is an event where the roar of vintage and modern race cars collide featuring the racing action of the Historic Sports car Racing (HSR) Series, the Historic Moto Gran Prix Motorcycles, The Louis Chevrolet Endurance Series, and the Nordic Camaro US Race. Of these several classes racing during the weekend fans can see everything from historic sports racing cars to fifth generation Camaros in the Camaro only racing series.

MASSEY RIDING WAVE OF MOMENTUM FROM SEASON-OPENING WIN AS HE RETURNS TO FIREBIRD INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Top Fuel driver Spencer Massey just celebrated his seventh career victory at the 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season-opener in Southern California and will try to carry that positive energy directly to race No. 2 on the circuit, the 28th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals, Feb. 17-19. He was left with a bitter taste in his mouth the last time he visited the Phoenix-area track.

His team’s performance at Firebird International Raceway last October put a thorn in the side of the Top Fuel driver’s hopes of earning his first NHRA Full Throttle world championship. Massey entered the fourth race of the Countdown to the Championship as the points leader, but when his team failed to qualify for eliminations at the playoff event, they lost the series lead and eventually the championship.

Dragstar.ca and ISP providing safety and confidence with seat technology in PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series drag racing

"Once they have them they won't drive without them"

WATERLOO, ONTARIO (February 13, 2012) – When it comes to drag racing, speed is obviously important, but a more vital factor is safety.

A relatively new product in drag racing is the form-fitting engineered seat for the driver, and dozens of teams in the Pro Modified Racing Association and the Quick 32 Sportsman Series have installed custom seats from Dragstar.ca and Innovative Safety Products, who support both the drag racing series.

"The business has done well," said Dragstar.ca's Marc McCrae, who has been preparing and installing the seats for four years. "We make drivers more consistent, more comfortable, and more confident."

Built as a foam insert, the ISP "pour in place" method fills all the voids around the driver, protecting the driver's torso 100 percent. The material is inherently self-extinguishing in case of fire, and will not drip or melt when in contact with a flame, and is stable to temperatures up to 400 degrees without deformation. Carbon X material is used to finish the seat insert.

"The driver sits in the same position every time," said McCrae. "The foam swells around the driver, and makes them more comfortable in the car.

"And with this added comfort," McCrae continued, "reaction times improve."

The seat insert is available for any class of drag car, from Bracket Racing to Top Fuel.

"Once I'm belted into my car, I'm always in the same position," said PMRA driver Jeff Roth. "I can concentrate more on my reaction time and not worry about getting comfortable. I wouldn't drive without one."
Another PMRA Pro Modified driver who recommends the ISP seat is Ike Maier, who had a nasty hit at the Cayuga Dragway but was able to walk away.
"I hit the wall hard in 2009," Maier relates. "And I got out unhurt. I was not even sore. So when I went Top Fuel racing in 2010, I made sure I had a Dragstar-installed seat in the car."
McCrae, who has crewed for such Pro Modified notables as Gary Irving, Al Hinds, and Jeff Roth, realizes a driver's comfort is an important issue, and with the seat insert, the driver can sit properly in the car and concentrate on racing.

"With the foam I can actually make the driver sit higher or lower in their seat, giving the driver more headroom along with getting their feet closer to the pedals if needed."

One driver who found this beneficial was Phil Sampson, who won the 2011 Quick 32 Sportsman Series Championship with his Chevy Cavalier door-slammer.

"Marc from Dragstar came to my shop and poured me a custom seat," said Sampson, "and he was actually able to position me correctly in my car, which made a big difference for me."

Along with the seat inserts, Dragstar is also working with teams in the use of head support systems. McCrae added that he not only deals with drag racers, but has been working with oval track racers, including Sprint Car teams.
