IHRA ANNOUNCES 2013 SUMMIT PRO-AM TOUR SCHEDULE

IHRA announces 2013 Summit Pro-Am schedule
Road to Tournament of Champions goes through Pro-Am Tour

NORWALK, Ohio (November 30, 2012) – It is the very backbone of the International Hot Rod Association and in 2013 the racers of the Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL will be featured more prominently than ever before with increased competition and more prestige for winning on the Pro-Am level.

Beginning this coming season the IHRA and Summit Racing Equipment are adding more exclusivity to the program by making the Pro-Am Tour the only path through which to earn a berth in the Summit Racing Equipment Tournament of Champions presented by AMSOIL. Like last year the top three points finishers in each division will move on to the championships tournament, but this year the Pro-Am top three will be the only way to qualify for the World Finals.

In other words beginning in 2013 everything goes through the Summit Pro-Am Tour.

The 2013 Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL will feature 38 races in 11 states and three Canadian provinces in six divisions. Each race weekend will include two points paying races with the exception of Division 9 which features four single races and one double race weekend. Two of the weekends will serve as Wild Card races that are open to all competitors and will count as an in-division claim for everyone in attendance.

Six of the events will be run in conjunction with Nitro Jam with Pro-Am competition throughout the day and Nitro Jam competition during the evening hours. Those racers lucky enough to go deep in competition at Nitro Jam events on Saturday night will also run as part of the show in front of the Nitro Jam audience. Those events include Pittsburgh, Bradenton, Grand Bend, Martin, San Antonio and Edmonton.

Beginning in Division 1 Patriots stops will include Richmond Dragway the weekend of April 26-28, Pittsburgh Raceway Park the weekend of May 31-June 2 and Maryland International Raceway the weekend of July 12-14.

In Division 2 Heat Wave the series will include stops at Immokalee Regional Raceway to open the year February 1-3, Bradenton Motorsports Park the weekend of April 19-21, Carolina Dragway the weekend of June 7-9 and Darlington Dragway the weekend of August 30-September 1. The Immokalee weekend will count as an in-division Wild Card open to all racers.

In Division 3 North Stars racers will compete at London Dragway the weekend of June 28-30, Grand Bend Motorplex the weekend of July 19-21 and U.S. 131 Motorsports Park the weekend of August 9-11.

In the ultra-competitive Division 4 Renegades the division will feature stops at State Capitol Raceway the weekend of March 8-10, San Antonio Raceway the weekend of April 5-7, Dallas Raceway the weekend of May 17-19 and Memphis International Raceway the weekend of June 14-16. The Memphis weekend will count as an in-division Wild Card open to all racers.

In the Division 6 Border Bandits competitors will travel to Eagle Motorplex the weekend of May 17-19 and Castrol Raceway the weekend of July 5-7.

Finally in the Raiders Division racers will compete in four single events and one double weekend to close the year. The Division 9 schedule includes stops at Piedmont Dragway the weekend of March 22-24, Dunn-Benson Dragstrip the weekend of April 5-7, Rockingham Dragway the weekend of May 3-5, Mooresville Dragway the weekend of May 31-June 2 and the double race weekend at Farmington Dragway the weekend of August 9-11.

More details about the Summit Pro-Am Tour will be released soon. Check back with www.ihra.com for more information.

Spotlight on 2012 Atlanta Dragway Track Champions

SPOTLIGHT ON ATLANTA DRAGWAY 2012 POINTS CHAMPIONS
By Amy Glover

Stan Sinack may have won the 6.50 Index championship the past two seasons, but this year he went on to dominate the Super Pro category for his first Super Pro championship. He thanked his wife Tammie, Ed Nalley and Bill Boomhower for helping him throughout the year, and his brother Spencer "for coming to the races and helping me out." Sinack's victory was a very tight win, with the top three  points leaders tied for first before the final race; Sinack clinched the title when he won the final round of the last race, about which he mused "I fell right into it." Sinack dedicated his championship to his father-in-law Ray Coggins, who is currently battling cancer.

ABILENE'S BIG COUNTRY RACEWAY RETURNS TO IHRA FAMILY

Abilene's Big Country Raceway returns to IHRA family
Big Country Raceway rejoins Division 4 with new owners, big plans

NORWALK, Ohio (November 29, 2012) – Following a year of no racing and a change of ownership at the former Abilene Dragstrip the IHRA is happy to report that the track has reopened under the ownership of Sterling Robertson with a new name, Big Country Raceway.

Built in 2003 by Burl Harris and Tommy Simons, the new Big Country Raceway will once again fly the colors of the IHRA when the track reopens in the coming months. The two-time IHRA track of the year has signed a three-year agreement with the sanctioning body.

"We are very happy to have Big Country back in our family of tracks. It is a nice facility with an ambitious new owner who has a lot of plans for updates to the track and grounds before the 2013 racing season," said Frank Kohutek, IHRA Renegades Division 4 Director. "The track has a lot of history with the IHRA and we look forward to many more years of great IHRA racing at the facility."

Big Country Raceway is an eighth-mile drag strip located just west of Abilene, Texas on Interstate 20. The track is centrally located in west Texas approximately 180 miles west of Fort Worth. Big Country features a full service racing facility with covered seating, state-of-the-art timing equipment, over 10 acres of paved, lighted pit parking, on-site fuel sales, concessions and many other amenities. In preparation for the 2013 racing season Big Country Raceway is currently adding even more pavement to the entranceway and to the pits in addition to upgrades to camping amenities and other facility improvements.

Big Country Raceway will compete in the Summit SuperSeries and other programs in Division 4 Renegades.

Earlier this year the IHRA reached a sanctioning milestone with its 100th member tracks and Big Country Raceway adds yet another fine facility for Renegades division racers. Big Country is the 14th IHRA track in the state of Texas making it the biggest state for IHRA drag racing ahead of North Carolina.

For more information about the IHRA and its family of member tracks visit www.ihra.com.

MIROCK Expands to Atco Raceway for 9 events in 2013

The Mickey Thompson Tires MIROCK Superbike Series is proud to present our 2013 schedule and to announce the addition of the historic 44th annual Orient Express U.S. Nationals at Atco Raceway to our series. The 2013 schedule will feature a total of nine events held between Maryland International Raceway, Rockingham Dragway, and Atco Raceway.

The MIROCK Superbike Series has always been held at Rockingham Dragway and Maryland International Raceway with racers all over the east coast supporting the series. There are many loyal MIROCK racers from the north (including NJ, NY, PA, DE, and CT), and with the addition of Atco Raceway to the schedule these racers will have at least one race close to home. Atco Raceway's Orient Express U.S. Nationals is one of the oldest motorcycle drag racing events in the country with 43 years of history, and has been re-established under the MIROCK banner.

Skip Dowling of Orient Express stated enthusiastically that "Joe and I are really glad to be a part of bringing the U.S. Nationals back to the historic Atco Raceway in conjunction with MIROCK. We have worked extensively with Jason Miller over the years, and we are confident that this will be a great event for racers across the northeast. It will also add an important seventh Orient Express ProStreet event to the MIROCK series, where the racing has been awesome!"

Jason Miller of MIROCK states, "We are very excited to host a MIROCK event at Atco Raceway in 2013. Orient Express has been a long time sponsor of the MIROCK series and when I spoke to Skip and Joe about bringing one of our events to Atco Raceway in 2013 they were all ears to help support the event. The addition of the U.S. Nationals will allow our MIROCK racers from the North to have a great race right in their backyard, and to entice motorcycle racers from even further North to check out what MIROCK is all about. I ask all of our loyal MIROCK racers from the Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, and the South as well as the West to support this iconic event. It will allow our MIROCK sponsors to tap into a new market and further dig our roots up and down the east coast."

There will be a total of nine events in 2013. Seven events will feature pro classes, sportsman classes, and the grudge class. Two events will host sportsman classes & grudge classes only (Sportsman Summer Sizzler & Sportsman Showdown). The reason for this change is for Rockingham to highlight the sportsman program, which is the backbone of the series, and to have two events dedicated just for the sportsman and grudge racers.

The MIROCK Superbike Series is the nation's largest all motorcycle drag racing series drawing nearly 600 racers and thousands of fans at each event. The series features ten different classes competing for over $400,000 in cash and contingencies. In addition to the motorcycle drag racing, select MIROCK events also feature Bike Shows, Bikini Contests, Stunt Bike Competitions, and Live Bands.
The first event for the 2013 Mickey Thompson Tires MIROCK Superbike Series will be the FBR Shop Spring Bike Open at Rockingham Dragway on March 22-24, 2013.

Atlanta Dragway 2012 Champions banquet

ATLANTA DRAGWAY HONORS 2012 POINTS CHAMPIONS AT BANQUET

By Amy Glover

Atlanta Dragway racers traded in their racing gear for button-ups and other formal wear to attend the 2012 Atlanta Dragway Banquet of Champions at the American Legion Post 127 in Buford, GA. Kids and adults were gathered around the Christmas tree; not the kind with presents of course, but there were plenty of goodies donated by sponsors to give away to attendees. Sponsors included Summit Racing Equipment, VP Racing Fuels, Lucas Oil, Coca Cola, Year One, Mickey Thompson Tires, Tanger Outlet Mall, Wendy's, Comfort Suites Commerce, Fairfield Inn, Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, K&N Filters, and more.
The first part of the ceremony honored the participants of the Jr Dragster racers. Families came out in full support to cheer them on for their accomplishments during the 2012 season. The Butler family won 'Best Looking Pit Vehicle', Austin Solesbee won the 'Best Appearing Older Jr Dragster' award, and Wesley Syme won the 'Best Appearing Younger Jr Dragster' award. The 'Junior Sportsmanship Award' went to Jackson Earwood, and the 8-9 champion Nate Halsey was given the 'Most Improved' title. Jr Dragster parent Lynn Solesbee won the 'Extra 1/8 Mile' award for her contributions to the Jr Dragster program. Winners of the Qualifier Shootout included Nate Halsey and Jacob Wilson for the 8-9 category, Austin Bowden and Austin Carden for the 10-12 category, and Brittney Hellemn for the 13-17 group.
Nathan "Hotrod" Halsey was the 8-9 year old Jr Dragster champion, and thanked his dad Jeff, mom Lovelle, sister Maddie, his Aunt Wendy, his teacher Ms. Fraley and friend Maggie Merret, and 'Little' Bill Gillen. Austin "Skull Crusher" Carden remains undefeated for a third consecutive year in the 10-12 Jr Dragster category. "I'd like to thank God for the ability to drive and doing what I love to do." Carden also thanked his dad Matt and Jeff Brown for being his crew chiefs, mom Charlene, nana Connie, and sister Alayna for cheering him on. Brittney Hellemn came out on top with a ten point lead in the 13-17 Jr Dragster class. She thanked the racing families and the track employees, as well as her granddad, mom and dad, and  dedicated her championship to her late friend Adam Smith.
After the Jr Dragster ceremony concluded, the "big car" racers took over the banquet hall. Track director Mike Savage announced the racer's choice awards first, while racers talked and dined. Travis Bryant won 'Best Engineered Car', Steve Brown won the 'Good Luck Award', Diane Mansolillo won 'Crew Chief of the Year', and the 'Sportsmanship Award' went to Jesse Wilson. Chad Brewer won 'Most Inspirational Driver', Tanner Dutton won 'Most Improved in No Box Classes', while Peter Mansollilo was named 'Most Improved Driver of the Year'. Jodee Kennedy won 'Employee of the Year' for her hard work and dedication to the track.
After several door prizes were given away, Savage announced the top competitors of each category, including the 6.50 Index, 7.0 Index, Open Comp Full Body, Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle classes, and then named the 2012 Atlanta Dragway Summit Series champions.
Stan Sinack won in the Super Pro category, and thanked his wife Tammie, Ed Nalley and Bill Boomhower for helping him throughout the year, and his brother Spencer "for coming to the races and helping me out." Sinack dedicated his championship to his father-in-law Ray Coggins, who is currently battling cancer. Travis Bryant won the Pro championship and the 6.50 Index championship, and thanked his dad Wade Bryant, Tony Holliman, HR Race Cars, Randy Suttles, and his wife Jessica. Bryant also thanked the track employees and Mike Savage. Howard Warren won the Sportsman championship with an impressive 270 point lead, and thanked God, his wife Shirley, and Atlanta Dragway. Tim Sutton defended his 2011 championship with another win in the Motorcycle category this year. Sutton thanked his wife Jennifer because "she goes to all the races with me."
John Norris, also a champion in last year's season, took home the 7.0 Index championship. He thanked Wade Bryant Automotive, Tri County Chevrolet, Rocky Ridge Custom Trucks, the racetrack, and all his friends, after earning the fourth championship of his racing career. Chad Brewer, last year's Pro champion, secured the Open Comp Full Body championship with a 50 point margin of victory. Brewer humbly gave thanks "to the Big Guy upstairs," and also thanked "an unnamed source" as well as Al Schaffer for all his support.
After the major awards were announced, champions Stan Sinack and Travis Bryant were called to the Christmas tree to battle it out for a brand new set of Mickey Thompson racing slicks. Bryant won two out of the three matches to round out his winning day. Afterward, racers were invited to spend the rest of the evening competing for tech cards for the 2013 season.
Mike Savage offered some closing words for the evening, thanking the racers for coming and racing with Atlanta Dragway during the 2012 season and that, "I look forward to seeing you all in March."

JEGS and newly crowned champ Allen Johnson to become teammates in 2013 & beyond

DELAWARE, Ohio (Nov. 19) -- Five-time world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. will become teammates to 2012 champion Allen Johnson with a two-car venture in the NHRA Pro Stock category beginning in 2013. Both men will continue to drive Mopar-backed Dodge Avengers powered by Hemi motors, which will originate from Johnson's J&J Racing shop.

"Allen and I were teammates this year under the Mopar umbrella so it was a very natural progression to become actual teammates moving forward," Coughlin said. "Allen and his father Roy, along with the rest of the guys at J&J Racing, really put on a show this year and proved to everyone that Mopar can compete with and triumph against the best of the best in one of the toughest categories in racing. We're very excited about joining with them."

Johnson led the Pro Stock class with seven victories in 11 final-round showings this year, improving his career record to 16 wins in 36 finals. He also led the field with 10 low qualifier awards, set low elapsed time of the race nine times, and ran top speed on 10 occasions. The end result was the first Pro Stock title for Mopar since 1994.
Of Coughlin's five world titles, four have come in Pro Stock, with the JEGS.com pro coming out on top in 2000, 2002, 2007 and 2008. His 53 national event victories in the class place him fourth on the all-time list.

"The plan is for Allen and I to start a tradition of Mopar winning titles with regularity," Coughlin said. "They have given both Allen and I all the tools we need to succeed and I think the first year of the Mello Yello NHRA Drag Racing Series will be a great one for both of us. We hope to get these cars as close to matching clones as possible so we can really work off one another at every race. The multi-car team approach works, as we've seen in the past, and hopefully it will work for us as well."

Vincent Nobile driving the Mountain View Tire Dodge Avenger, who just completed his second year in the category, will continue to use J&J Racing engines.
