CarSafe, CarSafe Motorsports and ADRL Announce Fundraising Program with Red Cross for Storm Victims

CarSafe, CarSafe Motorsports and the American Drag Racing League (ADRL) jointly announced on Tuesday that they have created a fundraising program in light of the most recent storm tragedies that have taken place most recently in Joplin, Mo. and across the Midwest

A special donations webpage, www.CarSafe.tv/redcross or www.isyourcarsafe.com/redcross, has been made and donations to the Red Cross will be accepted from ADRL fans and teams to assist families in this time of need.

Additionally, the ADRL, CarSafe and CarSafe Motorsports will be working with the Red Cross during the upcoming Kansas National Guard Independence Drags V, which takes place June 17-18 at Heartland Park Topeka. Volunteers from the Red Cross will be at the event in Topeka, Kan., to assist in fundraising efforts for victims of the numerous storms and tornadoes that have ravaged the Midwest this spring.

"We are saddened by these recent tragedies and all those who were affected, including many close to CarSafe and the ADRL, and we wanted to help in some way," CarSafe CEO and President Mark Eckman said. "There are so many people who are now without a home or shelter, and have lost loved ones, and we appreciate the efforts and donations from everyone during this time.

"Working with ADRL executives and the Red Cross, we have come up with a great plan to help as many people in need as we can."

In addition to introducing the donations webpage, CarSafe, CarSafe Motorsports and the ADRL will be working with local media in Kansas City and Topeka to promote their fundraising efforts leading up to and during the national event on June 17-18.

The Red Cross will also be featured in a special wrap and on the crew uniforms of two CarSafe Motorsports competitors, ADRL Extreme Pro Stock driver Richie Stevens and ADRL Pro Extreme Motorcycle rider Kim Morrell, during the upcoming Kansas National Guard Independence Drags.

Eckman expressed his concern for the victim's in Joplin, Mo. and other areas such as New Orleans, the hometown for Stevens, and Tuscaloosa, Ala., which was struck by tornadoes and is the hometown of top ADRL competitor Shannon Jenkins.

"We are glad to be working with Mark, CarSafe and the Red Cross and we hope all ADRL fans will reach out and help those in need," ADRL Executive Vice President Jeff Fortune said.

"We wanted to aid the fundraising efforts in some way and we encourage everyone to visit the webpage and make a donation."

The Rich Hays Group will be helping to coordinate the fundraising efforts for the ADRL and CarSafe. For more information on how you can help or be involved, contact Rich Hays at 855-722-4646 or rhays@therichhaysgroup.com

To make a donation, people are encouraged to go to www.CarSafe.tv/redcross or www.isyourcarsafe.com/redcross.

Update information on PROJECT 1320 interviewee list

Interviews deliver a roller coaster of emotion

Quarter Mile Foundation announces that the PROJECT 1320 documentary series interview process of pioneers of drag racing and the performance aftermarket from the late 1940’s through to the 1980’s has gained over 60 hours of footage from 35 legends.

“To put it in drag racing terms, we had some engine problems to start but the determination of the board’s crew to keep the throttle open has remained very focused”, states Foundation Chairman, Traci Hrudka. “Hey, we all came from this industry and we carry the same passion, determination, family unity and the will to see this through.

“The overwhelming support we have received from the drag racing and performance aftermarket communities has put us where we are today with 35 interviews in the can. Support from Moroso, Mr. Gasket Co., Mallory, Express Parts, Mondello Technologies, Quick Fuel Technologies, World Products, SEMA, NHRA, Joe Amato, Lori Johns as well as over 500 members that are part of the “Project 1320 Friends” group has provided the opportunity to get this much accomplished. Additionally, the thousands of Facebook fans that have donated money, film, photos, memories and have kept following the progress, has also been a critical factor.”

These are the individuals interviewed to date:
  • Joe Amato
  • Linda Vaughn
  • Harry Hibler
  • Carroll Shelby
  • Louie Senter
  • Bill (“Speedy Bill”) Smith
  • Ed Iskenderian
  • Joe Schubeck
  • “Doc” Watson
  • Don Smith
  • Alex Xydias
  • Bob Airheart
  • Robin Millar (Pete Millar)
  • Joe Mondello
  • Rich Guasco
  • Roger Gustin
  • T.C. Lemon
  • Herm Petersen
  • Eileen Daniels
  • Marvin Graham
  • Don Hampton
  • Jimmy King
  • Bob Stange
  • Jerry Gwynn
  • Dale Funk
  • Barbara Hamilton
  • Dick LaHaie
  • Darrell Gwynn
  • Dale Emery
  • Jim Read
  • Jim Head
  • Jim Walther
  • Jon Lundberg
  • Ray Godman
  • Dave McClelland
“To be able to listen in on some of the interviews as they were being filmed has brought a whole new meaning to me about ‘going through the emotions,’ says Ms. Hrudka .

“What I have seen and heard has been a roller coaster of blockbuster proportions about what these pioneers have to share with the audience. You laugh, cry, gasp, held your breath, grimace and go through many other emotions as they recount their life experiences. Yes, I even had to sit on my hands to hold back from clapping. To say we are able to capture their life adventure recollections on film is a miracle, and to know we will be able to provide a means for these stories to tell the story of how our sport and industry was built on the determination and exploits of these men and women and their contemporaries is a very satisfying, yet humbling, feeling.

“However, we must understand death has taken several of these pioneering legends from us in just the past month. Additionally, others have fallen into ill health. It is at a point where you’re afraid to open your e-mails or answer your phone for fear of learning more unpleasant news. But, it is a fact we have to deal with and continue to forge ahead.”

The Quarter Mile Foundation will continue interviewing at the upcoming NHRA Heritage Series Holley Hot Rod Reunion at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky on June 14-16.

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. – Missing the first two races of the season isn’t the best way for a driver to start a championship hunt. In the 10-race schedule for the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series, missing two races means that 20 percent of the season is gone. Statistics say a move like that all but guarantees a driver would be out of the championship hunt.

Mike Castellana doesn’t want to know the odds.

Mopar expands Canadian drag racing support

Mopar to back Canada’s largest drag racing events in Edmonton, Grand Bend

NORWALK, Ohio (May 31, 2011) – Mopar® Canada, who has been the title sponsor for the IHRA’s Mopar Canadian Nitro Jam since inception back in 2000, has announced an important further expansion of their involvement within Canada’s drag racing scene.

The progressive company will supplement its sponsorship of the Grand Bend Motorplex event (July 16-17th) with new involvement in a title sponsorship role for the IHRA’s Mopar Rocky Mountain Nitro Jam Nationals at Edmonton’s Castrol Raceway (June 24-27th).

“During our decade with Grand Bend we saw that as a huge success and we were very happy with the response,” said Jim Kiritsis, Head of Mopar, Chrysler Canada. “We felt what better way to improve on that then by adding expanded involvement with the Edmonton IHRA race.”

With the announcement, Mopar Canada has cemented its presence and support for Canada’s two largest annual drag racing event attractions.

“We’d like to think of it as a one-two punch for drag racing,” Kiritsis added. “The sport has been so important to the Mopar brand and our company roots are there. So it only makes sense that we continue and be identified as a solid part of the sport in Canada.”

Kiritsis confirmed that Mopar’s full display hauler, which was a very popular fan attraction during last year’s event in Edmonton, will again make the cross country trip to Alberta. Numerous special Chrysler brand vehicles, local high-performance Mopar cars and an extensive line-up of the latest parts and accessories from Mopar will be available for viewing.

Western Canada’s reputation for Mopar brand drag racing is already highly impressive and reputed, thus making Mopar’s new support for the Rocky Mountain nationals a very deserving and timely development. Expectations are that a large number of top-running Mopar cars will be entered for competition.

MISSION, B.C. – John and Josh Dalrymple of Sunnyside, Wash., shared the winner’s circle as father and son for the Lordco Auto Parts NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing event at Mission Raceway Park. Josh was up first for the final in Super Street where he drove his ’67 Camaro to the win over Jess Dale, Bonney Lake, Wash., and his ’70 Dart. Then it was up to Dad and his ’04 Super Gas Corvette. John clocked in at 10.108 seconds at 131.86 mph for the win over Greg Hehr, Ravensdale, Wash., and the opportunity to share the winner’s circle with his son.

In the alcohol classes it was Ray Martin and Steve Gasparrelli taking the wins in dragster and funny car respectively. Martin made the trip down from Anchorage, Ala., and qualified No. 1 in this his first race ever. He then went on to beat Joey Severance to start his racing career with a win and take home his first NHRA “Wally” trophy. Martin beat Ashley Bart, Calgary, Alb., in round one and had a bye run in the semifinals.

Gasparrelli, West Covina, Calif., came from the No. 2 qualifying spot to face Dave Germain and Brian Hough in rounds 1 and 2 to advance to the final against Clint Thompson who qualified No. 1. Gasparrelli left first and never looked back clocking in at 5.712 seconds at 255.89 mph. Thompson spun the tries at the hit of the throttle and slowed to a 7.019 second lap.

Cruise to Texas Motorplex for Super Chevy Show

Cruisers will meet at Soulman's Bar-B-Que in Rockwall before Cruising to the Motorplex

ENNIS, Texas (May 25, 2011) – Get out the wax. Find your coolest sunglasses. It's time to cruise.

For the second consecutive year, Texas Motorplex is hosting a cruise that will lead directly to the annual Super Chevy Show.

Last year more than 45 participants lined up and cruised from Arlington to an exclusive entrance at Texas Motorplex, kicking off the Super Chevy Show in style.

This year, however, Texas Motorplex is working with regional car clubs to increase the number of participants to add even more flare to the nation's coolest brand loyalty event. Ennis Police Department has also agreed to help bring the cruisers through town in style, allowing cruise participants to get to an exclusive entrance of the Motorplex without stopping.

"Nothing looks better than a line of classic to modern Chevy vehicles," Texas Motorplex General Manager Gabrielle Stevenson said. "We were lucky enough to have Super Chevy Magazine covering the inaugural event and they got a ton of photos, cool videos and even a few stories from the cruise. It was thrilling to see the beautiful cars line up and create a jaw-dropping show on our Texas highways."

Cruisers will meet at the Soulman's Bar-B-Que location in Rockwall (691 East Interstate 30, Rockwall, TX). Participants can pick up fast pass bands that will allow all cruisers to enter the Motorplex as a group. The cruise will depart Soulman's at 8 a.m. and will head directly to Texas Motorplex where an exclusive entrance gate and priority parking will await them as the Super Chevy celebration officially begins.

The Super Chevy Show at Texas Motorplex will offer a car show, drag racing, an autocross course, a swap meet, live music, kid's activity area, Soulman's traditional Texas BBQ favorites and more.

It all starts with a cruise to celebrate one of the most beloved car brands in American history – and Texas bragging rights are on the line.

Royal Purple Raceway (formerly Houston Raceway Park) put together a cruise for its 2010 Super Chevy Show event with nearly 200 cars cruising the Houston highways. Now it's time to show Houston why they call it "The Big D" here in the DFW area.

"We had some of the best car clubs in the area take part in the 2010 cruise, but once we heard about Houston's success, we knew we needed to kick this event up a notch and invite everyone to cruise with us this year," said Ashley Kellough, Texas Motorplex competition director. "We're inviting Super Chevy Show Magazine to come back and capture what will certainly be an extraordinary event."

The cruise takes place Saturday morning, but the track will be hosting a test-and-tune Fast Friday event on June 3. The ever-popular Super Chevy Show and its car show, show-n-shine, swap meet and drag racing will continue June 4-5.

The drag racing portion of the event will feature bracket racing, including the new 5th Gen Shootout open to all fifth generation Camaros. The Texas Blown Alcohol Fuel Association will cap off the racing with the nostalgia dragsters.

Texas Motorplex was the first all-concrete stadium-style drag racing facility ever constructed. Built in 1986, Texas Motorplex has been the place of many drag racing milestones and world record performances. The Billy Meyer-owned facility hosts a number of racing and car show events between March and November each year and also features the Champion's Club – an 11,000 square-foot facility – that serves fully catered events throughout the year.

BROWNSBURG, IN (May 30, 2011) --- The inaugural trip to the Indy 500 was a whirlwind of fans, drivers, media and overall excitement for the drivers of John Force Racing. Over the course of three days John Force, Robert Hight, Mike Neff and Courtney Force signed autographs and mingled with fans on three different occasions at the John Force Road Show at the corner of 16th Avenue and Georgetown located just outside the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. JFR also hosted housands of fans on Saturday before the 500 at their Brownsburg shop during the 5th annual Brownsburg Motorsports Network event.

"I just want to thank all the fans that came to our shop on Saturday. It was a busy day and we had people coming and going for over hour solid. I want to especially thank all my people for working all day to make sure everything went well. That means a lot to me and to the Brownsburg community," said John Force.

On Friday Force as well as Hight, Courtney and Neff signed autographs at the John Force Road Show. A constantly growing crowd was impressed with all six of the Funny Cars on display and they enjoyed the videos highlighting NHRA Full Throttle Racing as well as information about other motorsports series. After the autograph session the group moved inside The Speedway for the first time. Joined by NHRA President Tom Compton, the JFR group explored pit road and the famed Indy garage area. Throughout the afternoon fans and crewman stopped the group and asked for autographs or to pose for photos. John

Force took a few minutes to talk with Indy legend AJ Foyt. Force was impressed with the size of The Speedway especially the sprawling press room where he and Compton met with a number of national media members to talk about the 2011 NHRA season, his first impressions of Indy and his young drivers.

"It was an honor to meet AJ Foyt. He is a real Texas gentleman. We walked and walked all over that place. They offered me a golf cart but I wanted to be out there with the fans. We got to spend some time with Chip Ganassi and we just missed seeing Snake," said the 15-time world champ. "I can't thank the folks at the Indy 500 enough they rolled out the red carpet for us, probably because we had Tom Compton with us. I can't thank him enough for taking extra time out of his schedule to go with us. We got to spread the gospel for three days and on Sunday our Road Show was packed. I was worn out at the end but that is what we do. I can't wait to get to Englishtown."

On Saturday morning Force attended the AARWBA Indy breakfast where he again talked about how special attending his first Indy 500 was and what it meant to be talking about the NHRA to a new crowd of fans.

"I want to thank the Hulman-George family for inviting me to watch the race from their family's suite. That is something this ole truck driver from California never thought would happen. It was an unbelievable weekend," concluded Force.

On Sunday morning Force wrapped up his media obligations with a pre-race sit-down interview with WISH-TV. Force watched the race as a guest of the Hulman-George family and was blown away by the overall crowd and atmosphere.

NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Final Results from Brainerd International Raceway, Brainerd, Minn.

BRAINERD, Minn. (May 30, 2011) – Richard Putz and Scott McVey took home big wins this weekend for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder at the Lakes event at Brainerd International Raceway.

Putz, Earlville, Iowa, and defending West Central Division Champion, saved his best pass of the day for the final round in Top Alcohol Dragster where he faced off against Jared Dreher, Clinton, Ind. Putz’s 5.380 second run at over 260 mph was too much for Dreher who clocked in at 5.530, 244.34. Putz qualified 3rd and knocked out Scott Palmer, Marionville, Mo., and Randy Meyer, Spring Hill, Kan., in rounds 1 and 2 respectively.

McVey, Winnipeg, Manit., CAN., defeated the current West Central Division Champion Kirk Williams in the final of Top Alcohol Funny Car with a lap of 5.673 seconds, 254.09 mph to Williams’ 5.929, 242.02. MeVey’s ’06 Monte Carlo went quicker in each round beating Bruce Carlson, Prior Lake, Minn., in round 1 with a 6.328 and Kris Hool, Casper, Wyo., in round 2 at 5.693.

NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Final Results from Maple Grove Raceway, Reading, Pa.

READING, Pa. – Duane Shields and Frank Manzo each took home wins and the trophies for this weekend’s NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Maple Grove Raceway. Shield made the trip from Boulder City, Nev., and ran 5.30’s throughout eliminations beating Daniel Page and John Finke on his way to a final round match up with Dan Mercier, LaPrairie, Quebec, CAN., in Top Alcohol Dragster. Shields’ 5.374 second pass at 265.85 mph was enough to hold off Mercier’s 5.398, 266.90, which was his best pass of eliminations.

Manzo continued his dominance in Top Alcohol Funny Car posting low elapsed time in each round of eliminations. The Morganville, N.J., racer faced Todd Veney in the final round running a 5.590 second lap at 260.01 mph to Veney’s 5.716 at 255.05 mph. The win is Manzo’s first divisional win of the year to go along with two national event victories including one last weekend in Topeka, Kan.

The course will be open to all Super Chevy Show participants – as well as driver's wanting to only compete in autocross – between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

There will be several categories for autocrossers of all levels to enter including a ladies category, novice and pro. Winners will receive plaques for each category at the end of both days.

Autocross is just one of many exciting elements that make up each Super Chevy Show event, including car show, show-n-shine, swap meet, car corral, drag racing and more. Autocross courses are designed to challenge handling, performance and driving ability as each participant goes through the solo, timed course.

"Equipe Rapide is one of the top sports car clubs in the DFW region and we think having them at the Super Chevy Show event this year will give our racers, car show and other participants another challenge during the weekend," Texas Motorplex GM Gabrielle Stevenson said. "Super Chevy Show has something to offer all of our spectators and fans and autocross is just one more exciting attraction."

The Equipe Rapide Sports Car Club was formed in 1967 and incorporated in 1995, with a large DFW membership that focuses on autocross and other solo racing events.

Texas Motorplex was the first all-concrete stadium-style drag racing facility ever constructed. Built in 1986, Texas Motorplex has been the place of many drag racing milestones and world record performances. The Billy Meyer-owned facility hosts a number of racing and car show events between March and November each year and also features the Champion’s Club – an 11,000 square-foot facility – that serves fully catered events throughout the year.

IHRA unveils brand new website dedicated to sportsman racing

Norwalk, Ohio, May 26, 2011 – The International Hot Rod Association is proud to announce a brand new website dedicated to serving the sportsman racer and providing the latest racing news from the most sportsman-friendly sanctioning body in drag racing.

The new IHRA.com features a new streamlined presentation, new features and an easily accessible interface designed to provide racers and fans alike a place to go for all things IHRA sportsman racing.

"The first thing you will notice when you visit the new IHRA website is the Ironman trophy jumping off the page and showing what this site is all about – IHRA sportsman racing," said Skooter Peaco, IHRA VP of Race Operations. "Our goal is to provide a cleaner, easier and more exciting website for our racers and fans and I think this site has all of that and more."

The new IHRA.com website is designed to focus solely on IHRA sportsman racing at the national, regional and local levels, including complete coverage from Nitro Jam and Summit Pro-Am events, the Summit SuperSeries, the Summit Tournament of Champions and other various IHRA sportsman programs and races including the brand new Summit Racing Sportsman Spectacular.

Some of the website features include complete results and stats from IHRA events, stories on IHRA sportsman racers, tracks and more, exciting action photography and easy access to all the latest rule changes, forms and need-to-know information straight from the offices of the IHRA.

More than anything the new website is designed to be a one-stop-shop for all things IHRA sportsman racing, while all professional news and information from the Nitro Jam tour will be relegated to the recently launched Nitro Jam website at www.nitrojam.com.

"We felt it was important to separate the two entities and give both the complete attention each deserves," Peaco said. "The new IHRA website will give us a chance to communicate directly with our racers and give them and the fans the information they need to know at all levels of competition. By giving the professional show its own home, we can now focus on what matters most here at the IHRA – providing the best sportsman racing in the country.

"The new IHRA website follows the same line of sportsman-oriented thinking that helped give sportsman their own uninterrupted time and spotlight at Nitro Jam events. Basically, by moving Nitro Jam to its own site, it allows us to highlight and feature sportsman news more prominently than in the past."
