NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Final Results from Las Vegas

WHITELEY, BARTONE LEAD LUCAS OIL WINNERS IN VEGAS

LAS VEGAS – Jim Whiteley and Tony Bartone led a list of big names visiting the winner’s circle yesterday for the Summitracing.com NHRA Nationals at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Whiteley, Grand Junction, Colo., grabbed his second win in as many days knocking out Cody Perkins in the final round of Top Alcohol Dragster.  Whiteley went 269.35 mph in 5.306 seconds for the win over Perkins, Bluffdale, Utah, who advanced from the 15th qualifying spot to the final round posting a 5.679, 247.25 mph lap.  Whiteley defeated Chris Demke in the final of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Regional event on Saturday that was delayed from a week ago.

Bartone bettered his final round appearance from last week, taking the win in Top Alcohol Funny Car this weekend over Claremont, California, racer Jay Payne.  Bartone, Long Island City, N.Y., qualified No. 1 and ran low elapsed time of the event, 5.539 seconds, 261.62 mph in the final against Payne.  The win was Bartone’s 38th national event win.  Payne clocked in at 5.641, 255.53 out of the No. 2 qualifying position.

Dan Fletcher and Jeg Coughlin joined in with NHRA national event win numbers 76 and 67 respectively giving Bartone, Fletcher and Coughlin 181 wins between them.  Fletcher, Churchville, N.Y., took the Comp Eliminator win in his Rick Braun owned ’09 Cobalt running 7.816 seconds at 170.30 mph to Doug Lambeck, Northridge, Calif., at 8.511, 153.32 mph in his  ’06 Pontiac.

Coughlin, Delaware, Ohio, who has won in six different NHRA classes, held off Mike Miller in Super Comp with a 9.060 at 163.28 to Millers 9.030, 178.42 out of Santa Fe, N.M.

Stock Eliminator featured a Father vs. Son battle with Brad Burton facing off with dad Scott.  Brad, Kirkland, Wash., came out on top with an 11.153 second lap at 115.14 mph in his ’72 Formula.  Scott runs a ’70 Formula out of Golden, Colo.

Jimmy DeFrank scored lucky number 13 taking the win over Glenn Snow in Super Stock while Jesse Serna won in Super Gas.  DeFrank, Chatsworth, Calif., ran down Snow, Saint George, Utah, with a 9.043 second, 149.58 mph run to Snow’s 10.456, 120.88.  Serna, El Paso, Texas, was two-thousandths quicker than Val Torres for the win in this ’93 Grand Am Super Gas entry.  The pair were identical off the line with Serna posting a 10.052 to Torres’ 10.054 in his ’63 Corvette.
