CHICAGO (June 3) -- Reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Hector Arana isn't expecting to get much sympathy from his competitors. In the first five races of the motorcycle season he's raced to three runner-up and two semifinal finishes. He's collected three No. 1 qualifier awards and is currently enjoying a massive 101-point lead over his nearest rival in the Full Throttle points.
The only thing missing for the rider of the Lucas Oil Buell is a trip to the winner's circle.
"It would be nice to get a win," Arana admitted with a smile. "We've been working hard, we've had great results, we just haven't finished it off on race day. I'd really like to get another Wally real soon."
Arana got a little spoiled last year, winning five times en route to his world title, including a coveted victory at the U.S. Nationals.
He enters this weekend's 13th annual United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals as the undisputed favorite, but drag racing can be a fickle sport at times and the quickest and fastest racer on the property has no guarantee of success.
"The good news is we know how to win," Arana said. "And we have the bike to win, no question about that. We've gone through the motor and the chassis since the last race and made sure everything is perfect. We'll be ready to race and try to win again.
"It's not easy because there are so many great riders in the class. Everyone wants the same thing. Of course, this is what makes it so exciting.
"I know in my heart that the wins are coming our way. I just need to do my job on the bike, probably not think about it too much, and just have some fun out there."
Professional qualifying begins with two session at 3 and 6 p.m. CDT Friday at Route 66 Raceway.
