Saturday Insanity event at Atlanta Dragway

WALLY A GOOD LUCK CHARM FOR SINACK, WARREN

(Commerce, GA – June 19) Two winners from last weekend's NHRA Unleashed event, Stan Sinack and Howard Warren, extended their streak to today's Saturday Insanity event. Hardcore competitors showed up, despite the smothering heat, for the event that missed an Old School category this time around.

Stan Sinack (Lilburn, GA) popped wheelies in his '69 Dart all the way to the final round in the 6.50 Index class, against David Smith (Bishop, GA) in a '68 Camaro. Sinack won the tree with a .003 reaction time, Smith chasing after with a reasonable .057 green light. Smith's chase ended too quickly, breaking out wit ha 6.43 second run at 109.98 mph. Sinack overtook the finish line with a dead-on run at 106.82 mph. Sinack was very humble about his win, giving thanks to racing peers Ed Nalley and Bill Boomhower "for helping get the car ready, and dialing it in." Matt Bates ('70 240Z—Loganville, GA) and Josh Cohen ('77 Camaro—GA) ended the day in the semi-finals.

Howard Warren ('72 Maverick—Douglasville, GA) felt the heat against racing buddy Rob Hogue ('68 Camaro—Loganville, GA) in the 7.50 Index finals: "It was hot, and my luck was hot." Warren gained the advantage with a .023 reaction, but Hogue wasn't far behind with a .030 light. The pair stayed close until the finish, but Hogue just couldn't keep up. Warren claimed the win with a 7.51 elapsed time at 89.76 mph, Hogue running it out in 7.52 seconds at 92.79 mph. Warren made it a priority to "thank my wife for supporting my racing habit." He also thanked boss George Alderman of GNT Autoparts in Carollton for "getting me the good stuff." Mel Abney ('64 Chevy II—Cumming, GA) and Shane Williams ('99 Mustang—Knoxville, TN) were the 7.50 semi-finalists.

Allen Schaffer ('69 Firebird—Austell, GA) and Jimmy Mason ('93 Camaro—Canon, GA) were fired up for the Open Comp/Full-Bodied finals. Schaffer was dialed in at 7.88, Mason just a little quicker with a 7.44 prediction. Schaffer gained the advantage with his .095 launch, while Mason dragged behind with a .149 green light. Schaffer crossed the finish first, in 7.94 seconds at 85.89 mph, flashing the win lights while Mason completed his 7.51 second run at 93.71 mph. Schaffer felt the pressure first round when a shifter cable broke, but made a great recovery "thanks to George Mitchell," regaining his composure for the win. Schaffer also thanked his wife Tracy, Chad Brewer, and the Mayor of Hickory Flat. Brett Bowman ('81 Trans Am—Homer, GA) and Eric Smith ('71 Nova—Baldwin, GA) finished in the semi-final round.
