IHRA Salt Lake Nitro Jam Preview

Nitro Jam makes its Salt Lake City debut this weekend

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (June 14, 2010) – After an overwhelmingly successful five month tour of the southeast, with stops in Florida, Louisiana and North Carolina, the Nitro Jam Tour is packing up and heading west for huge weekend of racing at Salt Lake City’s Rocky Mountain Raceways.

The upcoming Salt Lake Nitro Jam has the drag racing industry buzzing as the largest drag racing entertainment show in the nation takes its new act west to one of the most beautiful racing facilities in the nation.

Huge crowds are expected at the debut Salt Lake Nitro Jam

“I can’t wait to take Nitro Jam out west. Last year Salt Lake City was a new market for us as we tested out the new format and it was an overwhelming success. We are certainly looking forward to bringing the full show to Utah and give them the full Nitro Jam experience,” said IHRA President Aaron Polburn. “I am looking forward to continuing the momentum we have going as we head to one of the biggest races of the year. We have a lot of great stuff planned for the area.”

Beginning at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Utah June 18-19 Nitro Jam will bring an entirely new set of racers to compete in Pro Fuel and Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car while the four-man Top Fuel group of Bruce Litton, Bobby Lagana Jr., Del Cox Jr. and Spencer Massey will return for another round of 300mph, nitro-fueled competition.

Included in the list of exclusive West Coast race teams that will travel to Salt Lake are the famous “War Eagle” Prostalgia machine driven by Dale Pulde, Tim Boychuk in the Castrol sponsored Pontiac, Twig Ziegler in the “Pizza Haven” machine and many more.

Hundreds of racers from two dozen states and three countries will be in attendance at Rocky Mountain Raceways

Along with three nitro classes, the Salt Lake Nitro Jam will also feature side-by-side jet trucks – a first in the west – the state’s fastest doorslammers and dragsters as featured in the Harland Sharp Elite 8, a huge fireworks display and much more.

Last year Salt Lake City acted as a test location for the new format and, after an extremely positive response, the full version of the show will return to the track with a show bigger and better than ever before.

Last season’s Nitro Nationals was a two-day stand alone event featuring several pieces of the puzzle now known as the new Nitro Jam. After an overwhelmingly positive response, the Nitro Jam that was born right in Salt Lake City will return June 18-19 with one of the biggest shows of the year.

Many state and track records will be threatened when the world’s fastest race machines take to the track

Heading into Salt Lake City Bruce Litton brings with him the points lead in Top Fuel after stringing together three consecutive victories beginning in Baton Rouge. He is followed closely by two-time race winner Bobby Lagana Jr. Del Cox Jr. and Spencer Massey round out the tightly contested Top Fuel championship race in third and fourth place respectively.

In Pro Fuel and Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car many of the regulars on the tour will stay on the east coast as a new set of teams and drivers head to Salt Lake City. The only regular from the first part of the season that will make the trek west is Steve Nichols, driver of the “Mill Road Boys” ’70 Camaro.

Shockwave will battle the Super Shockwave as two jet trucks collide for the first time at RMR

One of the most popular additions to the new Nitro Jam is the Harland Sharp Elite 8 Shootout featuring the quickest and fastest Top Sportsman and Top Dragster competitors in the west competing in heads-up competition for the crown of Utah’s fastest sportsman.

Finally, this year’s event will come to a close with one of the most exciting spectacles in all of motorsports – side-by-side jet trucks.

The Shockwave and Super Shockwave jet semis will make the trip west for the west coast’s first taste of side-by-side jet truck action. Producing well over 60,000 combined horsepower and huge flames approaching 20 feet in length, the jet truck showdown has become one of the most popular and awe-inspiring events in Nitro Jam history.

Add in a huge fireworks display and two full days of sportsman competition and the Salt Lake Nitro Jam at Rocky Mountain Raceways promises to be one of the biggest events of the year.
