JEGS CAJUN SPORTSNATIONALS CHAMPIONS CROWNED

BELLE ROSE, La. (March 21, 2010) – The first of three JEGS Sportsnationals for 2010 is in the books with three Louisiana racers taking big wins at this weekends 7th Annual NHRA JEGS Cajun SPORTSnationals at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, La. Just under 500 racers from across the country made the trip to No Problem in search of the coveted NHRA National Event Wally Trophy.

Stephen Rosen of Harahan, La., blasted to a 7.935 second pass at 168.45 mph for the win against Adam Hickey, Hammond, La., in the final of Comp Eliminator.

“We’ve worked so hard on the combination” voiced Rosen. “Everything just came together today. This is so exciting to win the JEGS event here at our home track.”

Joining Rosen were Keith Raftery, Lake Charles, La., and Glen Knapp, Baton Rough, La. Raftery drove his ’08 dragster to the win in the division’s Comp Cams TCI Top Dragster class at 202.97 mph in 6.658 seconds over Dave Connonlly who is a multi-event champion on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

Knapp had the early lead in his Super Street Final round match up against Kevin Edmonds, La Place, La., and held on for the win in his ’69 Mustang.

“We almost didn’t make it for our semi-final run” said Knapp. “I have to thank Mike Simoneaux and Cut-N-Heads Welding. We broke a fan and he was right there to help and get us back running.”

Joe Roubicek made the trip from California to take the trophy in the Sunset Racecraft Top Sportsman class over Danny Leibham. Roubicek, Westlake Village, Calif., ran 7.162 seconds at 154.09 mph in his ’68 Camaro. Leibham grew up at the drag races, watching and helping his dad John earn many wins himself during his impressive career.

Former NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series National Champion Larry Stewart, Clinton, Miss., returned to the winner’s circle in Super Stock knocking out Alvin Gullard, Destrahan, La., with a lap of 9.524 seconds, 136.70 mph in his ’67 Chevy II.
