Langdon lights up Gainesville with huge opening pass, leads Team Lucas

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 12) -- Sophomore racer Shawn Langdon posted the second quickest pass of a rain-shortened opening day of the 41st annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals, carding a 3.829 at 317.12 mph in his Lucas Oil/Speedco dragster in Friday's lone qualifying session.

"What an awesome way to start the weekend," Langdon said. "When you lose a qualifying session to rain it's critical to make a run like that, especially when we don't know what might happen tomorrow. It's supposed to be nice from here on out but you never know. At least now we know we've got a big number in the books."

Langdon was the quickest of the Lucas Oil contingent, besting teammate and car owner Morgan Lucas, who pedaled his way to a 4.258 at 245.76 mph in his GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil dragster, as well as reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Hector Arana (6th place, 7.059 at 190.40 mph) and Pro Stock driver Larry Morgan (11th, 6.661 at 206.95 mph).

"Our baseline runs are getting quicker and quicker, and that's exciting," Langdon said. "We'll keep tickling the tune-up and see if we can't creep up a little more on this thing.

"There's a chance we could run a 3.7 but it will depend on the weather. If the cloud cover stays, it could happen. If it starts to heat up then there will probably be way too much moisture in the air because it's pretty darn wet around here. We'll have to see what happens."

Friday's session that was lost to rain will not be made up, leaving Saturday's two rounds, scheduled for noon and 2:30 p.m., as the final chances for drivers to improve.
