NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series JEGS Cajun SPORTSnationals, Saturday at No Problem Raceway, Belle Rose, La.

FIELDS SET; SPECIALTY RACE WINNERS CROWNED AT CAJUN SPORTSNATIONALS

BELLE ROSE, La. (March 20, 2010) – In the final rounds of qualifying for the NHRA JEGS Cajun SPORTSnationals at No Problem Raceway Frank Aragona, John Benoit, and Tom Elliott all held on to their No. 1 qualifying positions from Friday’s day one action.

Aragona, Freehold, N.J., leads in Comp Eliminator, Benoit, Montpelier, Vt., has his ’68 Camaro on top in the Sunset Racecraft Top Sportsman class, and Brooks, N.Y., racer Elliott heads up the TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster field. Benoit covered the quarter-mile in 6.473 seconds at 211.89 mph while Elliott clocked in at 6.149, 226.09 mph. Both Benoit and Elliot will pocket $1000 for their No. 1 qualifying efforts courtesy of Motorvation, Garrison Construction and Southland Fire.

The King of the Bayou $1000 award and $500 Hughes Performance gift certificate was awarded to the best packet from round one in each of the super classes with Troy Coughlin, Delaware, Ohio, taking the honors in Super Comp; Ron Folk, Durand, Ill., in Super Gas; and Darrin Cristen, Des Allemands, La., in Super Street. The final specialty performance award went to Melvyn Daniels, Yardley, Pa., for winning the Super Stock AH class and the Hemi Challenge. Daniels drove to an 8.298 second pass in his ’68 Dart.

Wade Owens, Cape Girardeau, Mo., leads more than 100 racers in Stock Eliminator in his ’66 Chevelle and Arthur Leong is No. 1 in Super Stock out of Richmond Hill, Ga. Ronnie Harris, Metarie, La., rounds out the top qualifiers on his ’03 Harley Davidson in the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson.

With some unfavorable weather conditions in the forecast, NHRA and Track officials have decided to begin eliminations for all classes on Saturday. Racing continued into Saturday evening with rounds 1 and 2 of eliminations scheduled.
