GLENDORA, Calif. (Feb. 17, 2010) -- The National Hot Rod Association is pleased to announce the formation of the NHRA State Championship, a new special event program for its member tracks and E.T. Bracket racers beginning in the 2010 season. With member tracks across the country as well as in Canada and Puerto Rico, the program will recognize and award grassroots racers with a unique specially designed NHRA State Championship “Wally” plaque.
Much like State High School Athletic Associations that conduct state championships in various school sporting events, the NHRA will designate and recognize one annual event per state where NHRA member tracks are present as the official “NHRA State Drag Racing Championships.”
NHRA State Championship events will be held at Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds, Ga., Sept. 5; Coles County Dragway USA in Charleston, Ill., July 12; Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, Wis., July 17; and at Kearney Raceway Park in Kearney, Nebr., July 31 and Aug. 1. Other state and province will be listed on the NHRA divisional Web sites and NHRA.com.
E.T. Bracket categories that are part of the NHRA Summit Racing Series and a Jr. Dragster class contested within the state and NHRA geographic division will receive “Official NHRA State Championship” designation.
The new program will join NHRA’s current National DRAGSTER Challenge, NHRA Aerospace Components King of the Track and NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Challenge line-up of special events.
Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., NHRA has 80,000 members and 140 member tracks nationwide. As the primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the United States, NHRA presents 23 national events featuring the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series. Two NHRA-sanctioned bracket racing series provide competition opportunities for drivers of all levels: the NHRA Summit Racing Series and the NHRA Drags: Street Legal Style presented by AAA. NHRA also offers the Jr. Drag Racing League for youth ages 8 to 17.
