The hometown boys are still good buddies
Back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Greg Anderson and Kevin Smalley played hockey for the Denfeld Hunters. Anderson and Smalley have both moved on and made an impact in their own sports. Anderson literally hit the road. Smalley hit the ice. He played for the UMD Bulldogs for 15 games from 1981-84. He is now wrapping up his first year as the boy's hockey coach at Denfeld. Anderson this week was named the Driver of the Year in motor sports. It's one of the most prestigious awards in racing. But once upon a time they used to "lace them up" together for the Hunters.

Congratulations To The Division Champions
My one journey out of the house this winter consisted of a trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania and the 38th annual Division 1 award's banquet. As a long time D-1 guy it's always nice to get to join the racers from the Northeast and award the trophies to the best of the previous year. This year, in addition to the normal winners, the D-1 folks inducted two members into their Hall of Fame and that was one of the highlights of the evening.

European Top Fuel Bike 2004 review
While the rest of the world's fuel bike scene is becoming increasingly dominated by Fuel Harleys, the real threats to Larry McBride's long reign at the top of the multicylinder nitro scooter class look likely to come from Europe. Following on in the footsteps of Brian Johnson's and Stefan Reisten's world level performances during the eighties and early nineties, the strength in depth of European inline fuel bikes is stronger than in North America and Australia, and there are at least a couple of runners who are strong bets to burst through the five second barrier in the very near future.

Tommy Johnson Jr. Q&A

Drag Racer Takes Drivers' Award
In drag racing, a sport where winning is measured in thousandths of a second and margins of victory are inches, pro stock driver Greg Anderson stood out last year with a remarkable pattern of consistency. For winning 15 times in 23 National Hot Rod Assn. events -- and clinching the Powerade title earlier than any other driver ever had in a professional category -- Anderson was selected Speed Channel driver of the year for 2004.
NASCAR Goes Shopping in Big Markets
Having revved up interest in stock-car racing with last year's overhaul of the points system, NASCAR Chairman Brian France has his sights set on cultivating millions more fans at home and abroad. And he's looking to New York, the country's biggest media market -- as well as Canada and Mexico -- to provide the prospective converts who he envisions tuning in to NASCAR races on Sundays, scooping up souvenir merchandise and, in time, cheering for Hispanic drivers as they duel alongside superstars Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Burk's Blast - Selling the Sizzle
It has kind of crept up on me, but recent conversations with some of the major NHRA sponsors and their guys have led me to the conclusion that the current NHRA and IHRA management teams are hell-bent on not only changing the overall way drag racing is presented to their spectators, but are actually trying to change the demographics of the spectators that attend their premier events.

Quarter-mile and running extra hard
On June 19, 2001, four months after the initial proposal to San Bernardino County officials, California Speedway president Bill Miller and NHRA founder Parks announced plans for a quarter-mile strip in the main parking lot. The new strip would be less than three miles from the legendary Fontana Dragstrip, now buried by part of the Heritage subdivision. The infamous PA announcement at the 1965 Super Stock Nationals that precipitated a near riot reminded me of an interview I conducted with Jon Lundberg back in 1978, only 13 years after the event. It was The Voice of Drag Racing on the microphone that fateful night at York U.S. 30 — and Lundberg has paid the price ever since.

I regret to say that this will be my last Totally Bazemore column for Competitionplus.com. Full runs expected at NHRA testing
Racecar drivers -- drag racers in particular -- generally approach testing as a necessary evil. Drag-racing test sessions rarely involve full-track passes because crew chiefs and drivers typically attempt to improve a car's performance on a specific portion of the quarter-mile racing surface. Tommy Johnson Jr., however, said he can't wait for this weekend's three-day NHRA 'Nitro Blast-off' test session at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Using these stats, I compiled the list.
