Quarter-mile and running extra hard
On June 19, 2001, four months after the initial proposal to San Bernardino County officials, California Speedway president Bill Miller and NHRA founder Parks announced plans for a quarter-mile strip in the main parking lot. The new strip would be less than three miles from the legendary Fontana Dragstrip, now buried by part of the Heritage subdivision. Four years later, the drag strip designed initially to keep illegal racers off the street has grown up. Thanks to a recent renovation project that cost nearly a half-million dollars, track manager Dave Danish will embark on the most ambitious season ever, beginning today.
