KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Dec. 15) -- The Super Chevy Show, armed with new ownership from SCSW, enjoyed a solid season of success in 2010.
The national touring series, which celebrated its 30th anniversary, offered thrilling racing with the top car shows in the country while visiting some of drag-racing's most-storied tracks.
Here's a brief look at each of the 10 events of the 2010 season:
The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway: The year began in grand style as the of the Super Chevy Show visited the gltiz and glamour of Las Vegas on March 20-21. The event opened with the first of several popular car show cruises, with this one beginning in Los Angeles and concluding at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The highlight of the weekend proved to be the much-anticipated autocross, which was saw veteran competitor Mary Pozzi win the open division with a time of 37.784 seconds while driving for event sponsor Total Cost Involved. Other highlights for the weekend featured locals Michael Jackson, of Las Vegas, and Justin Lamb, of Henderson, Nev., win the bracket divisions. The car show included Richard and Debbie Gibbs, of Diamond Bar, Calif., win the Award of Excellence Award and Richard and Cheryl Hospelhorn, of Normal, Ill., win the Featherlite Transport Award.
Virginia Motorsports Park: The second race of the season included a stop at Petersburg, Va. on April 17-18. The event featured 447 car show entries, 504 swap meet vendors and some pretty good racing, including bracket competitors with a little taste of Pro-Mod. Kelly Martin won the Pro-Mod competition, with bracket winners including Billy Lyles, of Kenbridge, Va. in the D.O.T. finals. Tim Harper won the True Street Cruise.. The car show winners were highlighted by the Award of Excellence, which went to Ronnie Stapler, of Colonial Heights, Va.
Texas Motorplex: Dallas was the site for the third race of the season on May 22-23, and it included another thrilling weekend of racing and an awesome view during the car show. The weekend began with a car show cruise to the track on Saturday. Racing winners included Jeff Kmosko taking the True Street Challenge. The car show winners featured Ron Hafner topping all entries in the Custom Classic Truck category with his '61 Chevy Apache 10.
Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park: The fourth race of the season in Norwalk, Ohio on June 12-13 was also the front leg of back-to-back events. The racing was highlighted by JP Schuster's win in the Fuel-Altered competition. Other winners included Robert Pavlov, of Poland, Ohio, in the popular Shoebox class. Larry Gottsch, of Petersburgh, Mich., earned top honors in the car show with the Best of Show award for his 1967 Nova.
Heartland Park Topeka: The final portion of a back-to-back swing ended with a trip to Topeka, Kan. on June 19-20. Rick Farber, of Derby, Kan, highlighted the racing action, winning the Pro-Mod eliminator with a time of 4.354 on what is considered one of the top racing surfaces in the country. Todd Piper, of Wamego, Kan., and Luke Siebert, of Emporia, Kan. won the bracket divisions. Daniel Bunker, of Hays, Kan., highlighted the car show winners.
Maple Grove Raceway: The Super Chevy Show headed East for its sixth race of the 2010 season, making a stop in Mohnton, Pa. on July 16-18. The event traditionally draws one of the largest contingents of fans and participants and it was no different on race weekend. Ed Burnely capped the winner's list in the racing categories, taking home the Pro-Mod title. The bracket winners were Steve Dooley and Don Peters. Arnold Warner, of Culpepper, Va.topped the car show winners with the Award of Excellence, which he received for his 1939 Chevy Conversion.
Bandimere Speedway: It was back out West as the seventh race of the season visited Denver, Colo. on Aug. 20-22. Bret Williamson highlighted the racing, taking the West Coast Outlaw Pro-Mod eliminator. Sportsman winners included Johnny Bates, of Hudson, Colo., and Michael Brand II, of Thornton, Colo. The car show produced 80 winners among 37 categories, with Steve Luethge, of Omaha, Neb., taking the Best of Show Award.
Houston Raceway Park: The Super Chevy Show returned to HRP for the eighth event of the season on Sept. 11-12. The weekend began with a Car Show Cruise through downtown Baytown, Texas and concluded with some thrilling racing. The winners included Manuel Hernandez, of San Antonio, Texas. He won two events, taking the Super Pro eliminator and the Bonus Bracket race. Charles Youngblood, of Spring, Texas, highlighted the winners in the car show, taking the Award of Excellence. CJ Beaux, of Lafayette, La. won the Best of Show Award.
Bristol Motor Speedway: It was back to the East as the Super Chevy Show visited Bristol, Tenn. on Sept. 24-26 for the ninth race of the season. Friday and Saturday saw large racer, car show, and swap meet turnouts in the morning and afternoon, followed by a feature attraction of wheelstanders and exhibition vehicles for Thunder Valley Mayhem, which drew a huge spectator crowd. The weather wasn't as kind on Sunday of the event, as rain wiped out most of the remaining activities. The winners featured Randall Matheson, of Jonesbarough, Tenn. He topped the list of Editor's Choice Top 10 Awards.
Firebird International Raceway: The Super Chevy Show concluded its 2010 season with a stop near Phoenix on Oct. 22-23. Amber Dolezal, of Meza, Ariz., won the Shoebox class to highlight the sportsman racing winners. Kyle Newman and Mary Pozzi had the top times on Saturday and Sunday, respectively in the autocross, which was designed and run by the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving. Mark Meloro, of Meza, won the Award of Excellence.
