(Sydney, NSW)

The 2009 Karcher Nitro Champs, presented by Shannons, produced the usual rollercoaster ride of exciting action that only ANDRA Championship Drag Racing action can provide at Western Sydney Dragway.

ANDRA National Records took a pounding in several eliminators and in the Professional categories as well, as the cool May air and a very good racing surface produced some excellent racing action.

There were some wild moments too throughout the event, highlighted by Jay Upton’s scary 350km/h high speed exit off his Honda machine, that made news headlines from Friday Qualifying.

The headlines around the nation continued on Saturday, when 21-year old Amanda Shepherd’s Top Fuel Dragster turned into the Skips Fire Service Fireball after trying to pedal the car into the 8-car field, but obviously fell short as her 8,000 horsepower Nitro Engine completely exploded in the car.

ANDRA PRO CATEGORY RESULTS

TOP FUEL

Reigning ANDRA Top Fuel Champion Phil Read paced the field in Qualifying, posting a 4.565 ET, that fell just 2 thousandths short of his own National Record. Read hoped to narrow the gap on Phil Lamattina in the Championship chase and the door was opened when the Fuchs entry was eliminated in the first round. Read however also was sent packing by Mark Mariani, after his Auto One entry could not go to full Fuel pumps in his matchup and hence, leaned his engine out.

TOP DOORSLAMMER

West Aussie John Zappia continued his stunning winning streak and run of 5-seconders intact, producing a 5.828 National Record to win the final, against Ben Bray in the process.

TOP ALCOHOL

Gary Phillips kept his ANDRA Championship hopes alive in his Lucas Oil products Funny Car by claiming the win over fellow contender Steven Reed in the final. Phillips and Debbie Reed also delivered the quickest side-by-side Top Alcohol pass in history during qualifying session 1.

TOP BIKE

The flying Kiwi Athol Williams locked away the ANDRA Top Bike Championship and did it with an exclamation point by setting a new Elapsed Time (6.169) and Speed record (238.51mph) in the category in this country. In fact, Williams’ speed mark makes him the 4th fastest Motorcycle Drag Racer in world history.

PRO STOCK

Many observers believe this category delivered the best racing of the 2009 Nitro Champs. After qualifying, we saw the quickest and tightest-spread qualifying field in ANDRA History, with just 0.059 spreading the 8-car field! Just to round out the highlights, John Barbagallo set a new National record ET – with a brilliant 7.042 effort.

PB
PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE.

South Aussie Phil Howard set a personal best run of 7.360 to win an ANDRA Gold Tree Trophy, riding a motorcycle that had been stolen – and then found just weeks earlier.
