Darrell Russell's death prompted safety upgrades
The death of Darrell Russell at Gateway International Raceway last year prompted a flurry of equipment and rule changes by the National Hod Rod Association in an effort to improve the safety of Top Fuel dragsters. The type of tire was changed. Titanium was added to the protective roll cage surrounding a driver's head. A minimum tire pressure was mandated, and the percentage of nitromethane was reduced. Still, Houston attorney John Simpson, who represents Russell's wife, Julie, remains frustrated. The NHRA has not finalized its investigation, and Goodyear declined to settle the issue before a deadline this week.
