Introduce your kids to the excitement of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing both past and present this Labor Day weekend as part of the “Kids-In-Free” Promotion

GLENDORA, Calif. (June 20, 2011) —NHRA will showcase many of the fan-favorites from hot-rodding’s early days, including Cacklefests, car shows, jet car exhibitions and wheel-stander, in what is being billed as the ultimate 60th anniversary celebration of NHRA Drag Racing during the 56th running of the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, Aug. 31 – Sept. 5.


And, to introduce the sport to the ‘next generation’ of drag racing enthusiasts, NHRA is offering a special “Kids-in-Free” promotion throughout the Labor Day weekend event. All children, 12 and under, will be admitted free to the world’s largest drag racing event and the ultimate celebration of NHRA’s 60th anniversary. Not only will the event offer the most exciting side-by-side racing in the world with more than 1,000 race cars driven by the stars of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series, but NHRA will also provide many activities throughout the weekend that will appeal to hard-core nitro junkies as well as all first-time race enthusiasts.

Among the highlights of the additional attractions include the Hot Rod Corral, which will feature 60 award winning class hot rods and vintage show cars. The largest Cacklefest since the days of the 64-car Top Fuel fields will feature many vintage dragsters gathering on the track to be fired up simultaneously. Many of the legends of NHRA will be in attendance and roaming the professional and sportsman pits, which are always open to spectators. NHRA honorees and past Mac Tools U.S. Nationals winners Shirley Muldowney and Bob Glidden will be there throughout the weekend signing autographs, chatting with fans and sharing stories of their exploits on the world famous Lucas Oil Raceway drag strip. Muldowney and Glidden also will lead a special Track Walk down the drag strip on Monday morning before pre-race ceremonies, and everyone with a ticket is invited to participate.

In addition to the closest and most exciting side-by-side racing on the planet featuring the world’s fastest accelerating machines, the event also will play host to the 11th annual Mopar HEMI Challenge, an extremely popular one-race shootout. The Dodge Darts and Plymouth Barracudas that are most associated with NHRA’s Super Stock (A/HEMI SS/AH) class will compete for a record winner’s purse of $15,000. The event will be held Sept. 1-2.

On Friday and Saturday night of race weekend, NHRA will feature the return of fire-breathing jet cars and a gravity-defying wheel-stander that will surely bring the crowd to its feet each evening under the lights. The Don Garlits vs. Darrell Gwynn electric dragster exhibition runs will take place throughout the weekend and on Monday Sept. 5, NHRA has planned a special pre-race ceremony to remember and pay tribute to the 10th anniversary of the fateful day that forever changed the world, September 11, 2001.
