First wave of TOC qualifiers punch tickets to Memphis




Defending D2 champion Steve Dweck sweeps weekend in Hot Rod

NORWALK, Ohio (February 7, 2012) – With the first IHRA Summit Pro-Am event of 2012 in the books, some drivers are already looking ahead to an October date with the Summit Tournament of Champions at Memphis International Raceway after winning the first TOC qualifier of the year over the weekend at Immokalee Regional Raceway during the Division 2 Heat Wave season opener.

Immokalee hosted a double Summit Pro-Am event over the weekend with Sunday's winners also earning the distinction of being the first Summit Tournament of Champions qualifiers of 2012. After an exciting day of racing, those winners include Mike Thompson (Naples, Fla.) in Top Sportsman, Jeremy West (North Port, Fla.) in Top Dragster, Marion Stephenson (Williamsport, Ind.) in Super Stock, Myron Piatek (Holly Hill, Fla.) in Stock, Steve Mikus (Ashley, Mich.) in Quick Rod, Mick Rice (Naples, Fla.) in Super Rod and Steve Dweck (Hollywood, Fla.) in Hot Rod.

Four of the seven winners earned their way into the Summit Tournament of Champions for the first time.

Perhaps the biggest winner from the season-opening Division 2 Heat Wave meet was defending Division 2 Hot Rod champion Steve Dweck who swept both days of the event driving his bright yellow 1970 Chevrolet Camaro. Dweck defeated Steve Mikus of Ashley, Mich. on Saturday with a 6.993, 100.36 and followed that up with a victory over Cape Coral, Fla. native Tim Anderson on Sunday to earn his way into the TOC with another 6.993, 105.02.

Saturday's Summit Pro-Am winners were Rick McDonough (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) in Top Sportsman, Rich Coury Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in Top Dragster, Anthony Bertozzi (Ashley, Va.) in Super Stock, John Boyer (Nashville, Ga.) in Stock, James Cowie (Miramichi, N.B.) in Quick Rod, Jason McCandless (Naples, Fla.) in Super Rod and Dweck in Hot Rod. Junior winners from the weekend included Jared Koontz and Daniel Young in Masters, Steven Carpenter and Hailey West in Advanced and Troy Carpenter in Beginner.

Next up for the Heat Wave division is a trip to Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida the weekend of March 23-25.
