Cayuga Dragway next on Pro Modified Racing Association Tour

Cayuga Dragway next on Pro Modified Racing Association Tour
Fabled track has produced several PMRA Pro Modified winners over the years
CAYUGA, ONTARIO (June 1, 2009) - When Ike Maier won the recent Victoria Day Weekend PMRA race at the Cayuga Dragway, he became the 15th different winner in 21 Pro Modified Racing Association races held since 2005.
Maier also became the sixth different winner at the track, which is the oldest operating drag strip in Canada.
While the Pro Modified Racing Association has raced at many tracks throughout Ontario, Quebec, and New York State, the Cayuga Dragway at Toronto Motorsports Park has been one of the mainstays in the Pro Modified series. Carl Spiering of Jordan Station, Ontario, beat Al Billes of Barrie, Ontario to win the very first PMRA race back in May of 2005.
Mike Stawicki of Medina, New York, won the second 2005 event at Cayuga. In 2006, Mark Nielsen of Brantford, Ontario won the season opener at the track, while in 2007, Toronto, Ontario’s Sam Andreacchi and John Russo of Massachusetts took home the gold in PMRA competition.
Last year, Cayuga belonged to Stawicki, as the G-Force Race Cars Camaro driver won both rounds at the track.
Maier’s recent win was with his new 1963 Corvette-bodied Pro Modified. The Tottenham, Ontario racer had a solid day, qualifying number one in the field, and marching through the ladder with better runs on each pass. Maier said after that crew chief Kirk Silbermann was to be credited with his successful outing, as the team ran straight and true during each match up.
The PMRA Pro Modifieds return to Cayuga June 13-14 for the second round in this year’s PMRA tour for the Fifth Annual Family Weekend Spectacular. Teams will have their cars sorted out and ready for the event after their initial showing at Cayuga in May, and there should be some record-breaking laps in store.
The PMRA will headline the two-day event, which will include racing in the TNT Super Series.

About the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA):
The Pro Modified Racing Association, www.PMRA.ca, was organized late in 2004, started racing operations in 2005, and is entering its fifth year of operation in 2009. The PMRA is a self-governing organization with input from its teams, and adheres to the technical and safety rules as outlined by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) and the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). The series has event venues in Ontario, Quebec, and New York State.
The PMRA will compete at several drag strips in 2009, including dates at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario, starting with the season opener on May 16 and 17, June 13 and 14 and the season-closer on September 19 and 20, at St. Thomas Dragway in Sparta, Ontario on July 11 and 12, and the South-western Ontario track of the Grand Bend Motorplex at the 10th Annual MOPAR Canadian Nationals July 17 to 19, the Stratford Spectacular Hot August National presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts August 8 and 9 and on September 5 and 6.
Cars in the PMRA capture the true spirit of hot rodding, and the class is one of drag racing’s most exciting and colorful classes, offering a diverse group of race cars with different types of 2,500-horsepower supercharged, nitrous powered and turbocharged engines.
Combining classic body styles and modern equipment, constructors are permitted, within established rules and parameters, to modify and enhance the cars in both appearance and performance. The cars are fuelled by gasoline or methanol, propelling them down the quarter-mile in low six-second times at over 200 miles per hour. The PMRA provides drag race fans the opportunity to see, hear, and experience the popular Pro Modifieds, known as "the world's fastest door slammers".
Several of the PMRA events will be run in conjunction with the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, www.Quick32.ca, offering fans a great show of drag racing.

Garret Race Cars Joins National Guard ADRL as Contingency Sponsor

Garret Race Cars Joins National Guard ADRL as Contingency Sponsor

O’FALLON, MO (May 28, 2009) — The National Guard American Drag Racing League (ADRL) is proud to announce Garret Race Cars as its newest contingency sponsor. Garret Race Cars is a full-service chassis building shop in Marble Hill, Missouri, and the source of two-time defending Pro Extreme champion Jason Scruggs’ record-setting 1968 Camaro. Garret also built the 2007 Dodge Stratus in which Scruggs won the 2008 Pro Extreme title.

“This is a big step for us, but I think it’s important to support the racers who support us,” said Garret Livingston, owner and founder of Garret Race Cars. “The ADRL is on a huge growth curve right now and we at Garret Race Cars want to help keep that growth going.”

National Guard ADRL Director of Sales and Marketing Shawnna Reynolds said Garret Race Cars is exactly the kind of sponsor the professional eighth-mile drag racing series is looking for.

“We’re so happy to have Garret Race Cars join us as an official contingency sponsor,” she said. “It’s important to the National Guard ADRL that our racers benefit from the sponsors we bring on board and likewise, that the sponsors see a real return on their commitment to us and the race teams. I think Garret Race Cars is a perfect fit in all respects.”

As a chassis builder, Livingston said he appreciates the National Guard ADRL’s minimal rules beyond those required for safety. It allows him creativity in building the next generation of lightweight, but super-strong race cars to go lightning fast while keeping their drivers safe and secure.

“I don’t want to build the same old car; I want to take things to the next level and the ADRL allows me to do that,” Livingston said. “I want to encourage that kind of thinking in other racers and teams, too, so that’s why I’m offering this contingency bonus to teams that win or runner-up in a Garret Race Cars chassis.”

Garret Race Cars can be reached by phone at (573) 238-3055, or visit Garret online at www.GarretRaceCars.com.

Midlife Crisis Corvette hoping for successful PMRA 2009

Midlife Crisis Corvette hoping for successful PMRA 2009
Rochester, New York Pro Modified team back for Pro Modified Racing Association Tour
ROCHESTER, NY (May 28, 2009) – They’re not quite ready, but the Pro Modified team of Joe Caruso and Mike Cusimano plan to make a strong effort in this season’s Pro Modified Racing Association’s 2009 season.
Although car owner Joe Caruso mentioned recently the engine for the 1994 Corvette is still being tweaked and the team missed the PMRA season opener at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario, the Rochester, New York-based team will be in the hunt for the rest of the year, starting with the Fifth Annual Family Weekend Spectacular at Cayuga.
“Unfortunately, we weren’t ready for the opener at Cayuga,” Caruso mentioned. “We’re just getting things back together. But will we be back? Absolutely. We’re looking forward to it.”
The Midlife Crisis team Corvette, driven by Mike Cusimano, runs a Jan-Cen Racing Engines Rodeck powerplant, prepared by fellow Pro Modified racer Mike Janis.
“We’re making a few adjustments with the car right now,” Caruso continued. “And Mike (Janis) has the engine and he’s putting some more steam in it.”
The engine in the Stroupe Race Cars Corvette runs a PSI supercharger, and a Lenco three-speed is mated to it. A Jan-Cen Enderly fuel system is also employed.
Caruso and Cusimano did not race in all PMRA events in 2008. A highlight of their season was nailing down number one qualifier at Dunn Tire Raceway Park in Lancaster, New York last year, and getting into the final on the eighth-mile track, taking runner-up to fellow New Yorker Mike Stawicki’s G-Force Race Cars entry.
The team’s plans include PMRA events, plus Caruso mentioned they may take the trip to Norwalk, Ohio to compete in that track’s Friday night Door Wars. He added there are no plans to run the Corvette in any IHRA races this year, but some NHRA points meets may be in the works.
Crew chief for the Midlife Crisis group is John Vouros, and Mark Caruso and Chad Cusimano work with the team.
Sponsorship includes NitroPlate, the exhaust coating firm from Tennessee, and DRE Engine Diapers from Illinois.
Caruso said he is hoping for a more fruitful year in 2009.
“Hopefully we’ll do a little better this year,” he said. “We’re going to have to be on our game as the PMRA is going to have some great competition this year.”
For more information, contact Bruce F. Mehlenbacher Bruce@PMRA.ca
The next event for the Pro Modified Racing Association is the second event of the seven-race series in Cayuga, Ontario.
The Fifth Annual Family Weekend Spectacular is scheduled for June 13-14 at Toronto Motorsports Park.

MORE DRAGMASTERS!!!!!!

Hi Dragmaster fans!!! I came across these old 1962 Dragmaster photos while surfing the net. Both are Dragmaster Darts. One is an extended longer chassis to hold two motors and blower set-up. As I look at the top photo, the chassis seems to be missing the smaller loops and screens that you rest your helmet on. Cool, just the same!!!

NHRA Funny Car Racer James Day to Compete at Goodguys 21st Hot Rod Nationals June 12-14 at O'Reilly Raceway Park

Clermont, IN - NHRA Nitro Funny car driver James Day will once again jump behind the wheel of a Nitro burning Nostalgia car but its been awhile since he’s driven a Nostalgia Top Fuel car. Day will pilot Art Dromgoole’s Charlotte, NC based “Backyard Guys” entry at the Goodguys 21st Hot Rod Nationals, June 12-14 at O’Reilly Raceway Park.

Day is eager to mash the throttle of a front engined Nitro burning dragster. “I haven't driven a Nostalgia Top Fuel car since 2005 and I'm really excited about it,” he said. “There's nothing quite like sitting behind the motor with nothing to protect you. You need to have a lot of respect for this kind of car, you never know when those little tires are gonna come lose out there and it can get away from you in a heart beat. I enjoy the challenge of driving different types of cars, it keeps my mind fresh and it also keeps me off suicide watch (laughter) as our big show NHRA car is parked due to lack off funding. I can't thank Art and John Dromgoole for letting me drive their hot rod. We have Mark Leigh tuning the car and Pete Jensen is coming along to help out too. The Backyard Guys have great parts to work with so I'm excited.”

Day is no stranger to the nostalgia ranks as he drove Bob Steffens’ front engined top fuel car in 2004 and 2005,Ron and Ed Lenarth's Holy Toledo Jeep in 2008, and Johnny Nilssons Tre Kronor Plymoth Arrow out of Sweden at the 2009 march meet. “I love the Nostalgia movement,” he said. “I was born in 1978 so I missed this era of cars. I'm a drag racing freak and for me this is special because I get to relive just a little bit of the history of this sport.”

A large contingent of both Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragsters and Nostalgia Funny Cars are signed on for the 21st Hot Rod Nationals including defending Top Fuel event champions Roger Lechtenberg (top fuel) and John Dunn (Funny Car). Pro qualifying session’s are schedule for 3pm Friday June 12th and NOON Saturday, June 13th. Opening round of nitro eliminations will be held Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:30pm. A special Fuel Altered match race between Rich Guasco’s legendary Pure Hell and Dave Hough’s Nanook will be run all three days of the event. Guasco is coming out of retirement this year and will race Hough’s Nanook at the Hot Rod Nationals and the Goodguys 8th Blue Suede Cruise later this summer August 28-30 at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, OH.

The Goodguys Hot Rod Nationals is one of the nation’s biggest hot rodding event bringing over 4,000 1972 & earlier hot rods, customs, muscle cars & classics together with hundreds of vintage drag racers. For more event information visit www.hotrodnats.com

Rachel Greenberg Earns NHRA Super Comp License

After several successful seasons of racing Junior Dragsters, Rachel Greenberg has now received her NHRA competition license to drive Super Comp dragsters. Rachel was the 2007 Jr. Dragster track champion and runner-up in the Jr. Dragster track championship in 2008. For 2009 she is moving up to the “big” dragsters with a 2007 Undercover chassis powered by a 565 cubic inch Chevrolet engine. The car is capable of running 8.1 second elapsed times at 166 mph in Albuquerque’s mile-high air, but the Super Comp license can be obtained with somewhat slower times than that.

Rachel has already been racing the car for a couple of months at reduced speeds. She received her New Mexico driver’s license in December at the age of 15 years and 8 months. NHRA allows a driver with a state-issued driver’s license to drive a car at the race track as long as the car does not run quicker than 10.00 seconds or faster than 135 MPH. In order to go faster than that, the driver must obtain a NHRA competition license. The minimum age NHRA has set for a licensed driver is 16. With that in mind, Rachel has been competing with the throttle stop limiting the car to elapsed times in the low 10 second range at a top speed of 130 MPH. She went two rounds in her first race in March and three rounds in her second race in April. In addition she has made over 30 practice runs at the reduced speed.

Having turned 16 in mid-April, Rachel was anxious to get the license process underway. The NHRA license process requires a succession of 6 runs starting with a half-track shutoff and ending with 2 full runs. Rachel passed the required cockpit orientation test performed by track owner Robert Costa. For her first half track run, Rachel got to experience the car in an all-out mode as it ran a 1.20 second sixty foot time and 5.26 seconds to half track where she shut it off and coasted through with an 8.90 second elapsed time for the quarter mile at a slowing speed of 109 MPH. The remainder of her license runs were done using a throttle stop to regulate the car to times more in line with the Super Comp class. Her final two license runs were an 8.81 second ET at 161 MPH and an 8.77 second ET at 162 MPH.

One of the biggest challenges was fitting Rachel’s 4’10”, 90 pound body to the cockpit of a car designed for a much bigger driver. To fabricate a solution she turned to Robert Howard. Howard has been crew chief for many of Lyle Greenberg’s cars and does all of the engine and chassis work for the Greenberg team. After considerable thought, Howard adapted one of Jennifer Greenberg’s (Rachel’s older sister who races oval track cars) sprint car seats to the cockpit of the dragster. This securely cocoons Rachel into the cockpit in a very safe fashion. In addition, Howard relocated the dash, steering wheel, shifter and pedals to fit Rachel’s tiny stature.

Rachel’s next event is the Memorial Day Weekend race at Albuquerque Dragway. In addition to running a full schedule of events at her home track in Albuquerque, Rachel plans to race in Denver, Phoenix and Las Vegas later in 2009.

Rachel Greenberg represents marketing partners AMSOIL, Cabinet Concepts, SunCo Equipment and Supply, M&J Signs, Synergy Coatings, Howard Powered Racing Engines, NM Spring and Suspension and WJR Photography.

And as a side note, I don't think he spent time visiting in the middle east this winter on a vacation trip. Draw your own conclusions from that.
