PAGE MOVES TO NUMBER ONE IN TWO CLASSES AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY
(Commerce, GA – April 3) The Saturday Insanity series is gaining ground with racers, reinventing competition with a sense of traditionalism. Ricky Page has enjoyed success in the past few weeks, first winning Super Pro in the Summit ET series, followed by a win in the 7.50 Heads Up class. New for 2010, the Old Skool category was split into two classes: Radial Flyer and 10.5 Slick Tire. The 6.50 and 7.50 Index classes set a fixed ET goal for racers, encouraging them to run closest to a determined index. The Open Comp (Full Body) category is basically bracket racing, but with a pro-tree starting system. The Old Skool category is about the old days of racing, making whoever crossed the finish line first the victor.
The 6.50 heads-up class was led by finalists David Brand (Covington, GA) and Robby Brown (Loganville, GA). Brand rolled in with a silver ’68 Camaro, a striking contrast to Brown’s ’98 S-10 pickup. Both men were close to the finish, but Brand’s 6.53 second run at 105.79 mph beat out Brown’s 6.52 ET at 103.95 mph due to a better reaction time. Brand, having competed in the class at Silver Dollar Raceway, conquered on his first time in the 6.50 class at Atlanta Dragway. “I like it!” Brand remarked; of course it’s a good day when you can establish yourself as the top in points. Stan Sinack (Lilburn, GA) finished in the semi-finals in a ’69 Dart.
Mustangs dominated the 7.50 heads-up category; finalist Ricky Page (Monroe, GA) raced a ’90 model against Shane Williams (Knoxville, TN) in a slightly newer ’99 model. Williams beat himself by .004 of a second, running a 4.96 ET at 89.24 mph; Page stayed true with 7.51 finish at 90.78 mph. “The car was dead-on all day,” Page noted, “I’m on a roll this year.” Page now holds the top position in points for the Summit ET Series Super Pro class as well as the 7.50 class. Page thanked Mike “Peanut” Smith, and added, “another big thanks to my wife Angela for letting me spend all our money at the dragstrip.” Fellow Mustang enthusiast Randall Roop (’66 Mustang – Canton, GA) and Sean Garner (’89 S-10 pickup – Oxford, GA) ended the day as semi-finalists.
2009 7.50 champion John Norris (Royston, GA) made up for his losses in the 7.50 class today by taking his ’86 Camaro to the Open Comp finals, against 2009 Summit Series Pro champion Chad Brewer (Canton, GA) in a borrowed ’68 Camaro (lent by friend Larry Chance after his ’67 Camaro experienced a broken torque converter). Brewer lost ground with a slow reaction time, and despite his dead-on run of 6.72 seconds at 90.50 mph, Norris had the tighter run at 7.41 seconds on a 7.35 dial-in, at 93.46 mph. Norris plans to continue competing in both the 7.50 and Open Comp classes: “I want to thank the track, Wade Bryant Automotive, Kenneth and Jimmy Mason, and my wife Stacy.” Stewarts Watts (Demorest, GA) finished third in an ’84 Cutlass.
Mustangs also took charge of the Old Skool Radial Flyer category, but this time all had a South Carolina locale. Brian Bolt (’85 Mustang – Seneca, SC) challenged Bobby McNair (’95 Mustang – West Union, SC) in the finals. McNair’s car ran a bit slow, finishing in 6.23 seconds at 115.18 mph, following behind Bolt’s bolt to the win stripe in 5.83 seconds at 125.02 mph. Bolt reported changing his entire tuning combination, and gave “thanks to “Granny” for paying attention to all the small details,” and to “the old GHB (Lynn Rogers) for helping, along with Pro Fab Race Cars and Durham Racing Engines.” In true Ricky Bobby style, Bolt simply stated: “I wanna go fast.” Scott Black (Seneca, SC) was the Radial Flyer semi-finalist in his ’00 Mustang.
Tim Davis (Flowery Branch, GA) raced his way to the Old Skool 10.5 Slick Tire finals in a silver ’80 HR Malibu, against Jeff Voyles (Hoschton, GA), who came to play in a ’92 Mustang. Voyles left the starting line first, making a 5.99 second run at 117.77 mph, just behind Davis, who caught up and set off the win lights with his 5.78 second run at 123.16 mph. Voyles finished third in his last race, and after having placed second today, feels ready to graduate to first in his next competition. Davis credited his win to his wife April and his kids “for all their support,” and thanked HR Race Cars and Monte Smith Performance. Wesley Anglin (Carlton, GA) finished in the semifinals, in a ’51 HR Ford Truck.
