Racers during the first day of qualifying at the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals encountered the warmest conditions of the 2010 season, with the mercury topping 85 degrees and track temperatures reaching 128. As a result, teams found themselves scrambling to find the right tune-up for the tricky Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway surface.
Fortunately, Greg Anderson and the Summit Racing team seemed quite at home in the heat, posting one of the quickest times in each session, with his 6.737-second, 204.51 mph best placing him fourth midway through qualifying. Although pleased with his opening effort, the six-time Las Vegas winner noted he had other reasons for smiling.
“Today was a very positive day for the Summit Racing team,” said Anderson. “I made two decent runs, we’re going in the right direction, getting quicker and both the car and the driver feel pretty darn good.
“I have a lot of reasons to be happy this weekend. We have our friends from Summit out here with us, who do so much for myself and Jason, and I was able to spend some time with my boss Ken Black yesterday afternoon. Ken put a smile on my face, telling me not to worry about him and to go out and have fun, guaranteeing that if we did that, we’d have better results. Looking at how we did today, he obviously has the right formula.
“That is why we miss him so much. When he’s out here, he can straighten us out in a second, getting us out of whatever funk we may be in. Since talking to him, I feel like a whole new man, and we’re doing a better job with the race car.
“With all those people in our corner, I have a smile on my face that is not going to go away. So far I’m having a great weekend, and I’m going to do everything I can to make it just as good for those who support us.”
