ARAGONA, MARTEL LEAD WINNERS AT ATCO
ATCO, N.J. – Frank Aragona and Brian Martel led this weekend’s winners at Atco Raceway for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. Both drivers also lead the Northeast Division point’s standings and are second in the NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals point’s chase.
Aragona grabbed his third win of the year out of Freehold, N.J., in defeating Joe Carnasciale, Cranston, R.I., in Comp Eliminator. Aragona wheeled his dragster to a lap of 8.269 seconds at 136.08 mph as Carnsciale lost power and slowed to an 11.447 in the final round.
Martel used a .010 second package to claim his first divisional event win of the year to go along with a national event win back in June. The second generation driver had a .007 second reaction time and ran 9.203 on a 9.20 dial to beat Marty Rinehart for the Super Stock title.
Another second generation driver took the honors in Super Gas as Mike Sawyer ousted Jake Barbato by about 18 inches at the finish line while Casey Grubb made it two in a row in Super Street on the double breakout with Chris De Pascale. Grubb won the last divisional event at New England Dragway.
Wayne Horton returned to the Atco Raceway winner’s circle in the MXI/Magnaflux Top Sportsman class presented by Select Performance posting a time of 7.753, 175.57 mph in his ’71 Chevelle over Michael Kaufman in his ’67 Corvette and Mike Sullivan won in the MXI/Magnaflux Top Dragster presented by Select Performance against Clinton Mills. Horton won the 2010 Atco event as well.
Donald Pires and Herbert Roby rounded out the weekend winner’s. Pires leads the division points in Stock Eliminator taking his second win of the year defeating Donnie Carroll in his ’70 Nova. Roby, running a ’23 roadster, knocked out Marty Jones in Super Comp.
Northeast Division racers head to Cecil County Dragway in two weeks for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, August 17-19.
