FAMILY AFFAIR AT FIREBIRD
BOISE, Idaho – The husband and wife team of Mick and Jackie Alley of Eagle, Idaho, celebrated in winner’s circle taking home wins in both Stock and Super Stock at the Napa Auto Parts Ignitor presented by Dan Wiebold Ford NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Firebird Raceway. Also included in the event were the Nostalgia AA/Funny Car class and the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series.
Mick drove his ’69 Camaro to the win in Stock Eliminator and his first ever Lucas Oil divisional win with a 10.225 second pass at 123.55 mph in out running Joe Sorensen, Woodburn, Ore., in his ’69 Camaro. Jackie picked up where she left off last year taking her second win in as many years beat Tommy Gaynor in her own ’69 Camaro. Jackie went 9.633 seconds at 134.52 mph to Gaynor’s 10.382, 131.06.
In the Nostalgia AA/Funny Car class and the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series that ran in conjunction with the event, it was Jason Rupert, Yorba Linda, Calif., running 5.80’s and 5.90’s throughout eliminations to capture the win. Rupert went 5.907 seconds, 244.03 mph in defeating Mark Hentges, Federal Way, Wash., 6.063, 226.92. The win moves Rupert into the series points lead with a runner up finish at the first event to go along with this weekend’s win.
Rob Harrison won easily in Comp Eliminator over Alan Ellis and Mike Henderson outran Garth Giroux in Top Dragster. Henderson, Tacoma, Wash., went 7.073 at 184.46 to Giroux, Canyon Creek, Alb., CAN, 7.410, 180.54.
In Top Sportsman it was Billings, Mont., racer Jake Neibauer ousting John Whitmore in his ’63 Corvette with a pass of 7.702 seconds at 169.33. Neibauer was not the only driver to take a ’63 Corvette into winner’s circle as Steve Williams, Yorba Linda, Calif., drove his K&N Filters backed Corvette to the win in Super Gas over Dairld Wurtz.
Brian Preszler, Kennewick, Wash., took the win in Super Comp beating Mike Hiatt, Fallon, Nev., in the final; Travis Ringguth, Grand Prairie, Alb., CAN., won in Super Street over Steve Reynolds, Nampa, Idaho; and Al Omond, Surry, B.C., CAN, ran down Don Trafford, Nampa, Idaho, for the win in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson.
Rounding out the winners was Boise’s own Rose Shaw in the Heavy class in her ’78 Volare over Lucas Hull; Jon Riedel, Arlington Wash., took the Super Pro trophy in defeating Ed Cutler, Meridian, Idaho, and Paul Nicolosi, Nampa, Idaho, beat local racer Mike Hering, Boise, Idaho, in Pro.
The Northwest Division racers head north to Mission Raceway Park in Mission, B.C., Canada, for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, May 27-29.
