IHRA's international footprint continues to grow with additions in New Zealand, Canada
NORWALK, Ohio (September 23, 2011) – In a continued effort to grow its brand internationally and remain the top grassroots racing organization in the world, the International Hot Rod Association announced earlier this week that it has added three new international tracks to its member track roster.
The IHRA has added two new tracks in New Zealand and an additional track in Canada to its member track list, bringing its international list to 14 tracks and its overall track list to 96 strong. The new tracks include Fram Autolite Dragway and Power Built Dragway New Zealand and King of the North Dragway in Ontario.
"All three tracks are a big step forward in our international efforts," said Phil Gingerich, IHRA Director of Track Development. "We are really excited to get into the New Zealand market and to add another facility in Canada. All of the tracks are really excited about coming on board."
Fram Autolite Dragway is located near Auckland on the North Island in New Zealand and Power Built Dragway is just outside of Christchurch on the South Island. Fram Autolite sits in a beautiful location and it is this scenic and agricultural setting that provides the backdrop for some of the best racing in New Zealand.
"The members of the Pukekohe Hot Rod Club built the facility in 1973, and it was the first purpose-built drag strip in New Zeland," said track manager Gary Bogaart. "The club still owns the track today, but does not run it. There is a board of management in place that takes care of all the track's operations."
Fram Autolite Dragway draws crowds in excess of 5,000 to some of its larger events, making it a top destination on the island.
On the South Island sits Power Built Dragway, an equally as impressive track with a road course and a beautiful facility that should prove a cornerstone for great IHRA racing.
"Both tracks held a vote and the racers voted unanimously to go IHRA," Gingerich added. "This is a big addition for the IHRA and the tracks in New Zealand are excited to be a part of it."
IHRA's other recent addition is King of the North Dragway in Bonfield, Ontario. The track is located four hours north of Toronto and sits on over 200 acres of land. Similar to IHRA's other track in Ontario, Grand Bend Motorplex, King of the North Dragway is located in a resort area with plenty of beautiful scenery right on Lake Nosbonsing.
King of the North Dragway, which is in the final stages of being completed, will also include a stage to hold concerts and a large area for camping and motor home hookups in addition to all the great racing.
"The city is behind the effort 100 percent. They are excited and we are certainly excited," Gingerich said. "They plan on opening in May of 2012 and with their opening it will add another great venue to our growing family in Canada."
