Weekend drag race event retains its local roots after 17 years
Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts continues to be a community effort with many racers from the Stratford area
STRATFORD, ONTARIO (July 28, 2011) – The drag race series known fondly as "The Stratford Days" began as collaboration between racers and businesses in this Southwestern Ontario community to promote the sport.
Offering free tickets through local merchants in the Stratford area, the Stratford Days race has brought a lot of fans into the stands for the annual event, and this year's program, the Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts at the Grand Bend Motorplex August 4-7 will be its 17th anniversary.
While many of the 500-plus competitors are from areas other than Stratford, including the rest of Ontario, Quebec, and the states of New York and Michigan, there is a strong Stratford-area contingent which makes up a large part of the event.
Many of these local teams compete in the Pro Modified Racing Association, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series, and they will all be racing next weekend at Grand Bend in the fourth round of the 2011 season.
Teams such as K&K Racing of Stratford, with two-time Quick 32 Sportsman Series Champion and Top Sportsman driver Kevin Wicke. The two-car team of Hyde Racing of Stratford, which fields a Top Sportsman car driven by Spencer Hyde and a Top Dragster car driven by Sydnie Hyde, overseen by Peter and Lisa Hyde.
Another Stratford-area two car team in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series is White and Wild Racing, with both Bill White and Scott Wildgust driving Top Dragster entries.
The Top Dragster entry of Dordan Motorsports with Travis Gueguen driving comes from nearby Shakespeare. Just south of Stratford in Granton is Quick 32 Sportsman Series leader Phil Sampson with his Top Sportsman car, and Jeff Gable, another Quick 32 Sportsman Series Top Sportsman racer, is from Stratford.
There are several PMRA teams within close distance of Stratford, including Rob Atchison of London, and the Al Hinds entry from Waterloo with Gary Irving behind the wheel. The Pro Modified of Jeff Roth is also based in the Kitchener-Waterloo region.
Present PBSS points leader Randy Hope and his Pro Bike are from London. Another PBSS Pro Bike contestant, Dan Cryderman, is from Thamesville, and Bill Anderson and his Pro Sled are from Seaforth.
But no matter where the competitors make their home, the Stratford Days event will be one of the highlights of the racing season, with a weekend of not only drag racing, but four days of fan-racer interaction, socializing, and off-track events in a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere.
There will be full, points-meet events in the Pro Modified Racing Association, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series. The weekend will also feature Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars, Ike Maier in the Paton Racing Top Fueler, wheelstander and jet car action, and two top Alcohol Funny Cars, the Larry Dobb's car and Cassandra Simonton driving the Kon Rodz Racing entry of Spiro Kontos.

Find out which Moments will make the First Cut in the Quest to Determine NHRA's Greatest Moment
GLENDORA, Calif. (July 26, 2011) – There have been so many great and memorable moments in NHRA’s 60-year history, it’d be awfully difficult to pick just one as the greatest of the great, but that’s exactly the challenge NHRA presented to the more than a quarter of a million fans of its Facebook page.
And one of the most engaged and socially connected fan bases has not disappointed – the season-long program, executed exclusively on NHRA’s Facebook page, has generated more than 6 million impressions and 25,000 fan-interactions – setting the table for what will surely be an even more highly engaging and intensely debated final couple of months of NHRA’s 60th anniversary season.
The intense debate is already beginning as the first cut, which will narrow the list of moments from 60 to 20, is only weeks away (Sunday, Aug. 21) with some of the sport’s most memorable moments, including Don “The Snake” Prudhomme’s 250-mph-breaking run in Funny Car, considered by some the greatest run in NHRA history, sitting precariously on the bubble.
That moment, based on the weighted ‘likes’ system used to calculate the fan voting, is currently the 17th ranked moment on the list with eight moments, including Tom “Mongoose” McEwen’s emotional win at Indy in 1978, still remaining to be unveiled between now and Aug. 17.
Twelve Moments, including Bob Glidden’s Calendar-Year Winning Streak in 1975, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits blowover in Englishtown in 1986, Kenny Bernstein’s 300-mph-breaking run in Gainesville in 1992, and Tony Schumacher’s “The Run” in 2006 are already safely in the Top 20.
Fans can visit the 60 Greatest Moments Web page for complete program details as well as to link to up-to-the-minute rankings of the Moments that have been posted (blue) – as well as the Moments that have not yet been posted (black). Fans can go there not just to keep up with the voting, but also to view historical photos and videos that retrace every step in NHRA rich and storied history. The page also includes links to view a preview of / purchase NHRA’s “60 Greatest Moments” DVD.
Once the Top 20 have been settled, NHRA will unveil a dedicated tab on its Facebook page that will include the Top 20 Moments and instructions for fans to select their five favorites. That vote will open Monday, Aug. 22 and close Monday, Sept. 5, at which point the Top 10 Moments will be announced.
Then, beginning on Sept. 6, the dedicated voting tab on the NHRA Facebook page will reflect the Top 10 Moments as determined by the fan vote. This time, fans will only be allowed to select one moment, the moment they believe is the Greatest Moment in NHRA History.
At the conclusion of each of the first five races in the Countdown to the Championship playoff, the Moment with the least votes will be eliminated, leaving five Moments still in play entering the season-ending Auto Club NHRA Finals, Nov. 10-13.
Voting will close on Wednesday, Nov. 9 and the fans’ selection for the Greatest Moment in NHRA History will be unveiled during the Auto Club NHRA Finals, Sunday, Nov. 13.
