Abilene's Big Country Raceway returns to IHRA family
Big Country Raceway rejoins Division 4 with new owners, big plans
NORWALK, Ohio (November 29, 2012) – Following a year of no racing and a change of ownership at the former Abilene Dragstrip the IHRA is happy to report that the track has reopened under the ownership of Sterling Robertson with a new name, Big Country Raceway.
Built in 2003 by Burl Harris and Tommy Simons, the new Big Country Raceway will once again fly the colors of the IHRA when the track reopens in the coming months. The two-time IHRA track of the year has signed a three-year agreement with the sanctioning body.
"We are very happy to have Big Country back in our family of tracks. It is a nice facility with an ambitious new owner who has a lot of plans for updates to the track and grounds before the 2013 racing season," said Frank Kohutek, IHRA Renegades Division 4 Director. "The track has a lot of history with the IHRA and we look forward to many more years of great IHRA racing at the facility."
Big Country Raceway is an eighth-mile drag strip located just west of Abilene, Texas on Interstate 20. The track is centrally located in west Texas approximately 180 miles west of Fort Worth. Big Country features a full service racing facility with covered seating, state-of-the-art timing equipment, over 10 acres of paved, lighted pit parking, on-site fuel sales, concessions and many other amenities. In preparation for the 2013 racing season Big Country Raceway is currently adding even more pavement to the entranceway and to the pits in addition to upgrades to camping amenities and other facility improvements.
Big Country Raceway will compete in the Summit SuperSeries and other programs in Division 4 Renegades.
Earlier this year the IHRA reached a sanctioning milestone with its 100th member tracks and Big Country Raceway adds yet another fine facility for Renegades division racers. Big Country is the 14th IHRA track in the state of Texas making it the biggest state for IHRA drag racing ahead of North Carolina.
