Champion takes number one spot at Grand Bend in Pro Modified Racing Association Tour
GRAND BEND, ONTARIO (August 15, 2009) – After three rounds of qualifying, Bruce Boland of Hamilton, Ontario set low time with a 4.092-second, 179.24-mph pass in the Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals at the Grand Bend Motorplex in Grand Bend, Ontario.
Running in eighth-mile competition, 2008 PMRA Champion Boland just edged by Ike Maier of Schomberg, Ontario, who posted a 4.095-second clocking at 179.39 mph with his 1963 Corvette. Boland, driving the B&B Racing 1967 Chevy Nova, also posted top speed at 181.15 mph.
Driving the Nielsen Motorsports 1967 Camaro, Mark Nielsen of Brantford, Ontario placed third with a 4.112-second pass, followed by Tim Martin of Barrie, Ontario at 4.199 seconds with his 1963 Corvette, and Jason Kalso of Clarkston, Michigan fifth with a 4.215-second time in his 1970 Barracuda Pro Modified.
Rounding out the eight-car field will be Eric Latino of Scarborough, Ontario, Dave Earhart of Strathroy, Ontario, and Jack Grainy of North Tonawanda, New York.
In Quick 32 Sportsman Series action, presented by NAPA Auto Parts, Carl Spiering of Jordan Station, Ontario heads up the 16-car Top Sportsman field with his Chevy Cobalt. Spiering posted a 4.265-second, 166.05-mph run. Second in the class is Scott Wildgust of Wartburg, Ontario with a 4.355-second, 166.45-mph posting in his 1957 Chevy. Next is Stratford, Ontario’s Kevin Wicke, recording a 4.493-second, 153.76-mph run in his Dodge Stratus. Mike Wagg of Waterdown, Ontario is fourth with his Dodge Daytona at 4.571-seconds 154.50-mph, and fifth is Mike Beska of Waterloo, Ontario, in his 2000 Camaro with a 4.756-second, 146.60.
On the Top Dragster side, Todd Hope of Norwich, Ontario, set both ends of qualifying with a 4.019-second, 176.57-mph run. From Orangeville, Ontario, Michael Hinbest took number two spot in the 16-car field with a 4.177-second, 169.49-mph run, while Spencer Hyde of Stratford, Ontario is third with a 4.270-second, 161.89-mph run.
Jim Rubino of Buffalo, New York, is fourth with a 4.462-second, 157.28-mph pass, and fifth is Lisa Spiering of Jordan Station, Ontario, who posted a 4.488-second, 155.65-mph trip down the Grand Bend track.
Round one of championship eliminations will begin Sunday, August 16 at 11:30 a.m.
The event will feature the popular Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA), www.PMRA.ca, and the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, www.Quick32.ca, presented by NAPA Auto Parts, featuring Top Dragster and Top Sportsman action with quick six and seven-second cars, the event will feature a Paul Noakes versus Rob Atchison “King of Canada Funny Car” rematch, Jet Truck action, and a Supercharged V8 Drag Bike. Also on tap will be the Grand Bend Motorplex Top Dragster and Top Sportsman Series and some great racing action in the Thunder series and Junior programs, along with a fireworks display.
