Montecalvo putting it all on the line this weekend
“That was a damn good drag race.”
While most drivers would be more than happy to hear those words come from someone’s mouth, John Montecalvo believes he has heard quite enough of that this year.
Montecalvo has been in two IHRA finals in four tries this year and both finals ended exactly the same way – with less than a tenth of a second margin of victory for Montecalvo’s opponents.
While the pair of runner-up finishes has left Montecalvo in a great position in points, just
He is ready to win one.
“Anytime I have been on the receiving end of the statement ‘that was a damn good race’ I have to ask, for whom? From where I sit, runner-up does not equate to damn good, good maybe, but not damn good,” Montecalvo said. “This weekend we are not hearing it. The plan is to give it all we have for our Canadian fans and try our best to bring that trophy home.”
Montecalvo has proven he’s got what it takes to do exactly that. Now he just needs a little luck to make those close races fall in his favor.
“I’ve got a great team and Sonny’s given me exceptional power. I know we have exactly what we need to get the job done. We just need to add a little luck to it,” Montecalvo said.
Montecalvo and team will try their luck this weekend at the IHRA Mopar Canadian Nationals in Grand Bend, Ont. Montecalvo currently sits fourth in the IHRA points standings and hopes to close the gap this weekend between himself and frontrunner Frank Gugliotta. Although Montecalvo surely wouldn’t complain about being in a third IHRA final, he wouldn’t mind luck falling his way this time. In his own words, he hopes to “make it a damn good drag race for John.”
“This is by far our favorite area to visit. It’s a great town and we look forward to seeing the most enthusiastic crowd anyone could ever imagine.”
The Montecalvo race team would like to thank Sonny’s Racing Engines, Ram Clutches, Braswell Carburetors, and CAM
