NORWALK, Ohio (November 26, 2013) – IHRA is excited to announce the addition of Mo-Kan Dragway to the IHRA Member Track family.
Located
in Asbury, Missouri on the Missouri-Kansas border, Mo-Kan Dragway has
been open for more than 50 years, spending most of that time as an
outlaw track before joining the IHRA family earlier this month. The
track is currently under the leadership of owner and operator Carl
Blanton.
"We
are honored to be selected to join the IHRA family and look forward to
being part of the Summit SuperSeries and all of the great programs the
IHRA has to offer," Blanton said. "Being part of the IHRA gives us the
status we need to keep moving forward with improvements and upgrades to
our facility while adding new value to the 'Mo-Kan experience' for all
of our racers and fans."
Mo-Kan
Dragway opened for business in July of 1962 under the guidance of Jim
Wilbert, Bob McVickers and Ron Wilbert. Since then the track has hosted
some of the biggest names in drag racing history in addition to
putting together a tremendous racing program for its local racers.
Mo-Kan Dragway was one of the first tracks to host major events during
Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, both of which are still going
strong 45 years later.
In
the spring of 1999 Blanton took over the operation, buying the track
from the Wilbert family. Over the past 10 years Mo-Kan has undergone a
number of enhancements under Blanton including a complete resurfacing
of the track, the installation of an advanced Accutime timing system and
the construction of a new timing tower with offices and a VIP suite.
Other enhancements are ongoing including additional spectator seating
and additional lighting.
An
accomplished racer and drag racing fan himself, Blanton has an
extensive background that includes several major victories and other
endeavors including brief ownership of Ozark Raceway and operator of
the regional bracket series the Central Drag Racing Association.
Mo-Kan
Dragway is open every Friday night April through October and holds
major events during Memorial and Labor Day weekends. The Mo-Kan Bracket
Series is currently celebrating its 16th year and the track also hosts
a number of additional special events throughout the year.
With
the addition of Mo-Kan Dragway, the IHRA now sanctions 107 tracks in 28
states in the United States plus tracks in Canada, New Zealand, Aruba
and The Bahamas.
