CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 26) -- The opening day of the historic NHRA 4-Wide Nationals ended with teammates Morgan Lucas and Karen Stoffer in eighth place in their respective classes. Lucas drove his GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster to a 3.888 at 309.13 mph, while Stoffer coaxed a 6.992 at 191.32 mph from her GEICO Powersports Suzuki in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Lucas was very consistent on the day. In addition to his run of record, he also posted a 3.891 at 305.70 mph. Despite the great times under ideal conditions at Bruton Smith's facility, most of the talk centered on the first four-wide drag racing in national event history.
"I really didn't find it to be that big of a deal," Lucas said. "It seems like a lot of people need some time to adjust to it but I think if everyone plays fair we'll be fine. I don't know what the fans think and really that's the most important thing, but as far as what we did, it wasn't a distraction.
"We made what I would call two good, conservative runs. On the one hand, it was good to get down the track both times, but we probably could have been a little quicker. It did get pretty cold (tonight), right on the edge of being too cold. We need some heat in the track or the tires just won't grab no matter how much traction compound they put down."
Stoffer couldn't match her strong opening pass in Round 2 but she still stayed on the friendly side of the provisional ladder.
Qualifying resumes at noon and 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
