New faces on top entering San Antonio Nitro Jam

Smallwood, Savage head Nitro Jam's top two classes

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (March 28, 2012) – Nitro Jam may be a sport that is all about flash, excitement and entertainment, but for the drivers it can get pretty intense on the track.

Sure putting on a good show is foremost in their minds, but beating the guy in the other lane is really the driving force for their being. Just ask the stars of Nitro Jam's top two classes.

After struggling through much of 2011, Smallwood has won two races in a row

Winning races and ultimately a championship is what it is all about for the drivers in the Pro Fuel Dragster and AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car classes and for some that goal is not being met in the early part of the Nitro Jam season. Defending Prostalgia World Champion Peter Gallen is off to the worst start of his career, with three round losses already after losing just four in the entirety of 2011, and the man who was supposed to dominate in Pro Fuel – 2010 champ Bill Evans – left Tucson without a trophy as well.

In their place are a few new stars who have stepped up and are looking to keep the momentum going entering one of the biggest races of the entire 2012 season at San Antonio Raceway this Friday and Saturday.

"It has been an overwhelming start to the year. We ended last year on a high note after struggling most of the season and now to start 2012 with a win has given this team the confidence we need to go out there and do our thing," said Cherissa Smallwood, Friday winner at last weekend's Arizona Nitro Jam. "When you gain some momentum you start feeling like you can win against anyone and that is the attitude we are going to need if we are to contend for the championship this season."

Smallwood will be looking to make it three straight in San Antonio

Smallwood, driver of the "Nitro and Lace" dragster, is currently enjoying one of the most incredible turnarounds in recent motorsports history. Sitting at 0-16 in round wins entering the final race of the 2011 season, Smallwood found her groove at the season finale in Michigan and drove to her first career victory at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Seven months later at the Nitro Jam season opener in Tucson, Ariz. last weekend Smallwood repeated that feat with another victory and is currently on pace for her best season ever entering this weekend's San Antonio Nitro Jam. The reason for the turnaround? Attitude.

"We have a new trailer and have totally stripped our dragster to the bare chassis. We did some major adjustments to the driver's compartment and the overall appearance of the car including new parts from front to back, a new rear and we are also giving 100 percent nitro a shot this year," Smallwood said. "But more than anything, it is all about the confidence we gained at the end of last year that took us into 2012 with our heads held high"

Savage won his first career Nitro Jam in Tucson last weekend

Smallwood won three of four rounds in Arizona and ran her career best elapsed time and speed under the hot desert sun and is gearing up for another tall task this weekend. Smallwood will once again go toe-to-toe with Bill Evans and the "Black Pearl" team and Robin Samsel in "Predator," but this weekend she will also face off against another strong female competitor in Kristen Dennis from Magnolia, Texas.

Dennis, driver of "Ladies First," has one career Nitro Jam start to her credit, a victory at the Northern Nitro Jam at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park the same weekend that Smallwood picked up her first career win. Will it be a ladies weekend once again in Texas?

"I think so," Smallwood said. "There is just something to be said for a little girl power."

Another driver enjoying a ton of early season success in 2012 is Mike Savage, driver of the "Candies & Hughes" AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car. Savage had three Nitro Jam starts in 2011 with one final round appearance, but had never won a race until this past weekend at his home track.

San Antonio will feature the biggest Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car race of the year

Savage broke through for his first career Nitro Jam victory last Saturday at the Arizona Nitro Jam over defending champion Peter Gallen. Gallen beat Savage off the line, but in one of the closest drag races of the early season Savage charged back on the top end and bested the driver of the purple and gold "Poverty Stricken" machine.

Now it is off to San Antonio for the Tucson native to face off in one of the biggest nostalgia Funny Car races of the entire year for bragging rights that will last an entire season.

"There is a very tough field waiting for us Texas and we are certainly looking forward to the challenge," Savage said. "I treat each and every one of these guys I race against the same. They all have quality cars and great drivers and I am proud to get an opportunity to show what I can do."

Savage will square off with Gallen, 2010 Nitro Jam champion Steve Nichols in the "Mill Road Boys" Camaro, James Day in "War Eagle," Tim Boychuk in "Troy Lee Designs," John Hale in "Nitro Boss," "Jungle Jim" and more.

The San Antonio Nitro Jam is this Friday and Saturday at San Antonio Raceway. For ticket information visit www.nitrojam.com.

TASTE OF VICTORY AT GAINESVILLE FUELS LUCAS' HUNGER FOR MORE TOP FUEL SUCCESS AT LAS VEGAS

LAS VEGAS – Like a red-hot Blackjack player who is making solid bets and not getting too greedy, NHRA Top Fuel racer Morgan Lucas says his focus these days is all about building on momentum.

After posting back-to-back 10th place points finishes the past two seasons, Lucas came into the 2012 season looking for a fresh start with his GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster team. He hired a new crew chief tandem of Aaron Brooks and Rod Centorbi and the results three races into the season have been extremely positive.

Lucas powered to an impressive victory two weeks ago at the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals in Florida, recording the second-quickest run in NHRA history in the process. His final-round performance of 3.743 seconds at more than 326 mph blew away seven-time world champ Tony Schumacher in the head-to-head final-round race.

He will try to carry the momentum from that impressive performance into Las Vegas for this weekend’s SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals, March 30-April 1 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) are the defending winners of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event that will be televised on ESPN2HD.

“Winning Gainesville was intense,” Lucas said. “It was so much fun to win the way we did. It was great to see everyone so happy. We had people from GEICO there that weekend and they had a good time. It was just an exciting event all the way around.  The car ran so well in qualifying and it seems like we’re building some serious consistency. Whenever you feel like you can be competitive at any point and have the potential to win any race, that is what makes it fun.”

Lucas says he could see the potential with the team’s new chemistry at the first race of the season, back in February at the Winternationals, where he qualified No. 1 and advanced to the semifinals. Putting it all together for one weekend is one thing, but continuing to build on it week after week is the thing that his team has been lacking in recent years and is what is most satisfying for Lucas.

“You always hope that when you make a big change like this, things are going to go perfectly,” Lucas said. “Our whole intention from the beginning was to get Aaron and Rod acquainted with all the guys, and do what we needed to do for the big picture of chasing a championship. The car is just doing what Aaron is telling it to do. At this point my expectations for the first three races have been surpassed by a long shot. It makes me excited for the back half of the year. Right now, we can win any race if the conditions are right. Once we get some laps in hot weather, things are going to be just that much better.”

Lucas says Brooks, who spent time with Alan Johnson’s Top Fuel operation among other stops during his tuning career, brings a great confidence to the team.

“What I like about racing with Aaron is that he’s aggressive, but it’s not a cocky kind of aggressive,” Lucas said. “These cars can batter a crew chief’s confidence, but he knows and is confident in his capabilities. I also think he trusts my ability and my feedback, which makes for a good combination. It’s a team effort out there and every single person on the team knows they can give their opinions to Aaron and he’ll listen.”

The union couldn’t have come at a better time for Lucas. A host of tough challengers make up the Top Fuel division, with Schumacher, Brown, Spencer Massey, Shawn Langdon, rookie Khalid alBalooshi, Brandon Bernstein, Doug Kalitta, Clay Millican, Bob Vandergriff and Steve Torrence all very capable of winning rounds, races and championships.

“The competition is as good as it’s been in a long time,” Lucas said. “The recession hurt the sport, but I think it’s starting to rebound. You are starting to see a lot more cars on tour and more cars with the potential to win races. I think our teammate Brandon Bernstein can win the next race. The MAVTV car is great right now, but to win, things have to fall your way. It makes it exciting, and I don’t think there’s going to be one person who’s going to run away with it. It’ll be a fight all the way to the end.”

And there’s no place better than Las Vegas for a good fight. It’s only the fourth race of the season, but as far as Lucas is concerned confidence and momentum is gained each and every week.

“I love all the Bruton Smith racetracks and think they do a great job promoting this race,” Lucas said. “Las Vegas is the race with the most international flavor. Las Vegas, more than any other place, draws more racers and fans from around the world. It’s cool to visit with those people. I’d love to win there, because I think there’s some unfinished business from that final back in 2004. However, as long as we keep building on this momentum we’ll be happy.”

In Funny Car, Mike Neff hasn’t won a race yet but is leading the points based on a couple of runner-up finishes. Hight is riding a two-race winning streak in his Auto Club Ford Mustang and hopes to defend his title at this event. High-profile rookie drivers Courtney Force and Alexis DeJoria have been receiving much of the attention early in the season, but veterans Ron Capps, Cruz Pedregon, Jack Beckman, Johnny Gray, Jeff Arend and defending world champ Matt Hagan are all among the top challengers in the class.

Greg Anderson and Jason Line, who drive for Las Vegas native Ken Black’s Pro Stock team, will be the favorites in the 200-mph factory hot rod division. Defending event winner Edwards also won the most recent event, in Gainesville, and moved into second place in the series standings. Anderson, who has advanced to all three finals with one win this season and leads the points standings, has won this event three times and has seven total wins at LVMS during his career behind the wheel of his Summit Racing Pontiac GXP. Others to watch in Pro Stock include Allen Johnson, Jeg Coughlin, Erica Enders, Vincent Nobile, Rodger Brogdon, Greg Stanfield, Kurt Johnson and Larry Morgan.

STREAKING HIGHT READY TO LET IT ALL RIDE IN LAS VEGAS

LAS VEGAS – When one finds himself on a hot streak, certain travel destinations are more favorable than others.

That’s why NHRA Funny Car driver Robert Hight is excited about an upcoming trip to Las Vegas.

For Hight, this trip to Sin City is all business.

Hight will roll into The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the 13th annual SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals, March 30-April 1, as the hottest Funny Car driver in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. Not only is Hight the event’s defending Funny Car winner, but he is riding a two-race winning streak. The driver of the Auto Club Ford Mustang scored back-to-back victories in Phoenix and Gainesville, Fla. at the circuit’s last two events.

At Las Vegas’ SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals, where Hight is the only two-time Funny Car winner (also 2007), he’ll try to keep the momentum going and add a third-straight victory to his early season collection. Antron Brown (Top Fuel) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) also are defending winners of the NHRA Full Throttle Series event that will be televised on ESPN2HD.

“It is not that easy to get two wins in a season, so to get two in a row is huge,” Hight said. “I also look at the fact we won three races in a row last year and didn’t get the (world championship) title, so really it is too early to get too excited.”
In the ultra-competitive world of NHRA Funny Car racing, where 15-time world champ John Force has been the king of the hill for the past two decades, winning streaks come and go. Hight says the hard part of a streak is underway. Now, his team just has to keep their rally caps on and enjoy the ride.

“It is harder to start a winning streak than keep one going,” Hight said. “Once you have a couple wins, momentum carries over from win to win. Your team builds up confidence and it just seems to get easier. You never want to take it for granted because streaks can end just as quickly as they start.”

If not for a momentary lapse in concentration, Hight could be trying for his fourth win in a row. As the No. 1 qualifier at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals in Southern California, he suffered a rare first round upset. Hight says the brief setback gave his Auto Club team a chance to hit the reset button right away on the season.

“That first round loss definitely motivated us,” Hight said. “We were the No. 1 qualifier and to get taken out by the No. 16 qualifier really hurt. We didn’t race smart. We learned from that and luckily we only had a few days to think about it before we got to Phoenix and got back on track. That race in Pomona also proved that you can’t take anyone for granted. You have to make smart decisions because if you make a mistake the team in the other lane will take advantage.”

In taking the win last year, Hight used a consistent tune-up that produced a trio of winning 4.15-second runs before he used a slightly quicker 4.14-second run to defeat Johnny Gray in the final round.

“It is cool coming in as defending champ,” said Hight, who has earned 25 career victories and the 2009 world championship crown. “I believe one of the keys (to racing well at The Strip at LVMS) is to stay focused. There are so many distractions in Las Vegas. When we get there we tell the guys have fun on Wednesday night and after that that it is all business. We have to be at our best on the track and do it better than the other guys.”

Those other guys (and gals) include series points leader and teammate Mike Neff, who has advanced to two final rounds this season behind the wheel of his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang, Force, who has claimed three wins in Las Vegas during his record-setting career, Jack Beckman, Gray, Ron Capps, Cruz Pedregon, defending world champ Matt Hagan, and highly-touted rookie drivers Courtney Force and Alexis DeJoria.

“This class is as tough as it has ever been,” Hight said. “Only ten drivers will make the Countdown, so there will be some big names on the outside. Just because we have won two races, that doesn’t guarantee us anything. We have to stay focused because we do not want to be one of the big names on the outside after Indy.”

In Top Fuel, Tony Schumacher leads the series standings with two runner-up finishes in his U.S. Army dragster, but Morgan Lucas has the momentum entering the race in his GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster after winning in commanding fashion at the Tire Kingdom Gatornationals. Defending winner Brown, Spencer Massey, Shawn Langdon, Brandon Bernstein and Doug Kalitta are all among the pre-race favorites in the 7,000-horsepower category.

NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Final Results from The Strip At Las Vegas Motor Speedway

WHITLEY SCORES FIRST WIN OF YOUNG CAREER

LAS VEGAS (March 26, 2012) – In just her fourth start in a Top Alcohol Funny Car, rookie Annie Whitely got her first win, upsetting heavily favored Tony Bartone in the Las Vegas regional final, 5.67 seconds to 5.78. Whiteley's husband Jim and Chris Demke were charging for the finish line side by side in the Top Alcohol Dragster final, but something blew through the lights in Demke's lane, giving him an inaccurate 4.92 elapsed time and nullifying the race, which will be re-run next weekend.

Bartone wheeled Rick Jackson's Center Pointe Mustang to low e.t. of both qualifying sessions (5.59 and 5.62) and low e.t of both preliminary rounds of eliminations, but he lost traction in the final and slowed by more than a tenth. "I didn't know I'd won," Whiteley said. "I try to just concentrate on staying in my lane and getting stopped, and my eyes never wander. I didn't see him, but I never look."

Whiteley's Roger Bateman-tuned car was the picture of consistency all weekend; she qualified No. 3 with a 5.68 and ran back-to-back 5.68s in the early rounds and a 5.67 in the final for the breakthrough win. "There was a spot on the track that we couldn't get through when we were testing before the race, and the same thing happened in the first qualifying session," Whiteley said. "We only had one more shot to get in, so Roger did something to settle the car down, and it made it right down through there. We were thrilled just to make the field – there were 16 cars trying to qualify – and we were ecstatic to get by the first round. That was my first round-win, and when we went up for the semi's, Roger told me 'OK, now you're playing with the big boys.' "

Each of the other three drivers left in contention – Steve Gasparrelli, Jay Payne, and Bartone – has double-digit national event victories and has finished in the top two in the national standings. Bartone took out Gasparrelli with a 5.60 and Whiteley edged Payne, 5.68 to 5.69, for the biggest win of her young career to that point.

In the Top Alcohol Dragster final, Demke's Peen Rite dragster had a slight lead at the 1,000-foot mark, but the outcome was too close to call, so a rerun is scheduled to be held in conjunction with qualifying for the national event at Las Vegas this weekend.

"I saw my win-light come on," Demke said. "Jim and I rolled around the corner, he came over to congratulate me, and I was just wrapping up my parachutes when somebody came up on a scooter and asked both of us who we thought had won. I said, 'I did – I never saw him.' But Jim never saw me either. It was close."

Going into the final, Whiteley appeared to have the advantage. He qualified No. 1 with a 5.30 and ran a 5.31 to eliminate James Butler in round one and a 5.32 against Don St. Arnaud in the semi's. Demke, who has swept both national events so far this year, was right behind Whiteley, qualifying No. 2 with a 5.35 and defeating Garrett Bateman and Joey Severance with times of 5.32 and 5.35, respectively.

Whiteley and Demke left almost simultaneously in the final, with Demke in the lead, .030 to .040, and then both drivers went into shake in low gear and slowed to their worst runs all day. "All the numbers to the 1,000-foot mark were accurate," Demke said, "and for me to lose, I would have had to have had an .854 split from the 1,000-foot mark to the finish line, and I don't think it did. I thought the motor might have hurt itself right at the end, but looking at the G-meter after the run, it didn't. Jim ran a 5.40 and, looking at our computer, I think I ran about a 5.39, so I should have gotten there first by 15- to 20-thousandths of a second. But I don't expect NHRA to use what's on my computer to declare me the winner, so we'll just have to try again next weekend."

Adam Bowdish took the trophy in Comp Eliminator out of Oregon City, Ore., beating Clint Sallee in the final while Don Kennedy and Jim Meador each grabbed trophies of their own.  Kennedy, Mesa, Ariz., won in Super Stock over former NHRA National Champion Jimmy DeFrank, Chatsworth, Calif., in his ’05 Sunfire and Meador, Yorba Linda, Calif., beat Cliff Hanson, Huntington Beach in Stock.  Meador drove his ’67 Camaro to an 11.01 second lap at 120.02 mph for the win.

The division’s Hughes Performance Top Dragster class went to Kevin Kleineweber of Phoenix running 6.88 seconds at 194.41 mph in defeating Art Hoover, Concord, Calif., at 6.98, 189.79.  Westlake Village, Calif., resident Joe Roubicek ran down Ed Olpin in the Top Sportsman class coving the quarter mile in 7.08 seconds, 194.94 mph in his ’68 Camaro.

Other winners this weekend were Butch Belair, Princeton, Minn., in Super Comp over Daniel Henderson, Boulder City, Nev.; Chad Langdon, La Mirada, Calif., defeated Randy Balough, Newbury Park, Calif., in Super Gas; Austin Dawning, Phoenix, beat Bernie Polvadore, Sun City, Ariz., in Super Street; and Tom Medlin, La Mirada, Calif., won in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson beating Pete Miclette, Garberville, Calif.
