Houston replaces Joliet; Heartland Park moves to Father's Day weekend
Kansas City (Jan. 28, 2010) – Houston Raceway Park has become a shareholder in the Super Chevy Show series and has set a date to be part of the 30th anniversary season in 2010. The Baytown, Texas facility will replace Route 66 Raceway on the schedule and will host a Super Chevy Show for the first time since 2005 on Sept. 10-12.
Seth Angel is Houston Raceway Park's executive vice president and general manager. He helped get Houston on the Super Chevy Show schedule and is thrilled it could happen so quickly. Houston Raceway Park held Super Chevy Show events every year between 1988-2005.
"The Super Chevy Show event is obviously another marquee event on any racing calendar and it will certainly be a signature event of our racing season," Angel said. "We're thrilled to have it back at Houston Raceway Park and I know it is going to fill a huge void in the Houston market."
SCSW, Inc., bought the series in the fall and the owners have tirelessly worked on preparing for the 30th anniversary season. Billy Meyer, one of the SCSW Inc., owners and the secretary and treasurer of the board of directors, said the schedule has been the top priority.
"We added Houston Raceway Park because we've had so many inquiries from fans in the south about the Super Chevy Show series," Meyer said. "Houston is a great destination for racers in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Houston also is one of the largest commercial and metropolitan markets which gives our sponsors tremendous opportunities."
Heartland Park Topeka moved the date of its Super Chevy Show up so they could host a Father's Day weekend event, June 18-20.

Nitro Jam to debut Fan Fest this weekend at Palm Beach International
Along with providing a more fan-friendly schedule and format this season the IHRA Nitro Jam series also plans on giving spectators more to see and do than ever before at all of its national events in 2010.
And that is where Fan Fest comes into play.
Prior to the start of the professional show each night racing will cease on the track and fans will be invited to the pits to interact with the Nitro Jam experience like never before. With everything from sign a Top Fuel dragster to be race director for a day and the much anticipated Nitro Thunder in the Pits everything at Fan Fest will be geared toward giving fans a chance to actually be a part of the action.
"Most racing series have some sort of fan interaction, but we hope to take the fan experience to a whole new level. We have always allowed fans to explore the pits and meet the drivers, but never have we allowed them to actually interact with the race itself until now," said IHRA President Aaron Polburn. "We want fans to walk away from our event and say not only did I have a great time watching an incredible show, but I also got to meet the stars of the series and help determine the outcome of the race."
Racing will get underway Friday and Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with sportsman qualifying and eliminations prior to the start of the professional show that evening.
Upon completion of the sportsman portion of the schedule Fan Fest will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday evening. Fans will have roughly two hours to explore the pits and meet the drivers as they prepare for their runs later that evening.
Along with meeting the drivers and crews, several stations will be set up in the pit area for fans to interact with the event. Included in the list of fan activities is a chance to sign fan-favorite Bobby Lagana's Top Fuel dragster moments before he makes a 300+ mph pass, a coloring contest where fans can design their own Top Fuel dragster with the winning picture being used as an actual wrap on a dragster later in the season, a reaction time tournament with an actual IHRA tree and a chance to be the race director for a day as fans are selected to draw the first-round pairings of the professional rounds.
Fan Fest will come to a close with the Nitro Thunder in the Pits as nearly two dozen nitro vehicles warm up at the same time creating an experience unlike any other.
"I fully expect fans to walk away from our events with a new perspective on what motorsports entertainment is all about," said Polburn. "Fans will see, hear and feel things they have never experienced before and I can't wait to present that to them."
Following fan fest the first round of Nitro Jam will get underway with the fan-selected pairings for Top Fuel, Pro Fuel and Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car. All of the classes will then return later in the evening for the "Night of Fire" with the two quickest winners from round one meeting up in the final to determine that nights champion.
Also on hand this weekend at Palm Beach International Raceway are a set of Nitro Bikes, the "Cool Bus" wheelstanding school bus, a huge fireworks display and the first-ever jet truck showdown between the combined 60,000 horsepower machines of the Shockwave and Super Shockwave.

Cynergy Composites develops ultra light 1969 Camaro Pro Modified body
G-Force Race Cars will use new body for new car for PMRA's Jay Santos
STRATHROY, ONTARIO (January 26, 2010) - One of the main theories in winning a drag race is power. The more power a car makes, the quicker it can get down to the finish line.
But since the advent of the sport, racers have also tried to reduce weight in their cars. The lighter a car is, the faster it will go.Over the past few years, reducing the weight of the car body in racing has been an important element in producing quicker times. Working through light metal and fiberglass from the past, today's builders of Pro Modified and Top Sportsman bodies work with the strong yet light carbon fiber.
Just before Christmas of 2009, Cynergy Composites put the finishing touches on its newest body, a 1969 Chevy Camaro, and shipped it off to noted Pro Modified builder Jim Salemi at G-Force Race Cars of Western New York.
Based in Southern Ontario, Cynergy has been at the forefront of body development in the popular Pro Modified class, and has raised the bar with the new Camaro.
"We've been working hard the last three years on the Ultra-Light Technology," said Tim Hodgins of Cynergy. "Just like engine builders spending time on the dyno - we've spent countless hours and thrown more materials in the dumpster than we would like to admit trying to push the envelope, but the result is our lightest and strongest body to date."
Some of Cynergy's customers include such Pro Modified notables as Alex Hossler, Mike Castellana, and Danny Rowe, as well as Pro Modified Racing Association regulars Mark Nielsen, Mike Stawicki, and the Grainy Brothers. This new Camaro is being built for Jay Santos of Milton, Ontario, who will compete with the new car this season in the PMRA."Two years ago, our lightest body was 56 pounds," Hodgins explained. "This new body is 46 pounds, which is a dramatic difference when the average Pro Modified body weighed about 80 pounds.
"We've pushed the technology to its limit."Hodgins went on to say that the body composite of gel coat, resin, fibers, and honeycomb is actually stronger than an 80-pound comparable body. He also said the cost associated with the new body is about 50 percent more than the heavier body.
Cynergy worked with G-Force in developing the new body.
"We've adopted what the Big-Three (automakers) developed in their wind tunnels for Pro Stock," explained Jim Salemi of G-Force. "We worked on many factors in developing this new body, including aerodynamics, properly fitting all rear tire sizes used in Pro Modified, and windshield angles. Our goal has been to reduce the size and reduce the weight, and to make it as small and light as possible."
Hodgins said he has built literally hundreds of the 1967-68 Camaro and Firebird bodies, plus quite a few of the 1970 ½ F-body, adding this new Camaro is totally new, and "we changed every inch from the 67-68 body."
The new Santos car is expected to be ready by late May of this year, according to Salemi. The car will feature a MSR Performance-inspired Fat Head Hemi with a screw blower and a torque convertor driven transmission. Project 1320 Participation at the Golden 50 NHRA Winternationals
Parma Heights, Ohio – Quarter Mile Entertainment Foundation and the National Hot Rod Association announced the two organizations are working together to provide a venue to further the reach of the PROJECT 1320 film documentary series during the 50th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals, held at the historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona Feb. 11-14, 2010.
The National Hot Rod Association will be providing a booth space to the Quarter Mile Entertainment Foundation within the “Golden 50 Corral” area, which will allow the foundation to interact with the visitors to what promises to be a very popular area over the course of the weekend.
The “Golden 50 Corral” will feature many of the important cars of the history of drag racing, restored for live exhibitions such as the popular “Cacklefests” held at many nostalgia events. In addition to the historic vehicles, many of the drivers which made them famous will be attending.
“NHRA supports the Quarter Mile Entertainment Foundation and PROJECT 1320,” said Jerry Archambeault, Vice President for Public Relations and Communications for the National Hot Rod Association. “We hope the foundation’s presence in the ‘Golden 50 Corral’ will help move the mission forward.”

GLENDORA, Calif. (Jan. 25, 2010) – NHRA announced today that Copart, Inc., a leading provider of vehicle auction services, has been named the Official Online Vehicle Auction of NHRA. The agreement follows Copart’s designation last September as the primary sponsor of Kenny Bernstein Racing’s Top Fuel dragster driven by Brandon Bernstein.
“Copart is jumping into the sport in a big way, with a comprehensive program that will give them access to NHRA’s core audience at all levels,” said Gary Darcy, senior vice president of sales and marketing, NHRA. “We have the perfect audience to align with their core business and the program will educate our fans about how Copart.com has more than 50,000 vehicles each day for sale online, and is the place for car enthusiasts and do-it-yourselfers to find a great deal on a great vehicle.”
The comprehensive official sponsor program in place with NHRA will complement Copart’s team sponsorship with KBR to maximize exposure. As part of the official sponsorship, Copart will have a major presence at all 23 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events through trackside signage, public address announcements, an inflatable at the top end of the race track, and big screen advertising spots. Besides pit-side hospitality with the team, Copart intends to engage in additional corporate hospitality at many of the national events.
Key to the sponsorship is a significant media and advertising campaign across all of NHRA’s platforms including NHRA.com, National Dragster and commercial television inventory on ESPN2, NHRA’s broadcast partner. NHRA and Copart are working on additional interactive elements designed to engage the NHRA fans and immediately begin educating them on Copart and its position as a leading online vehicle auction.

It's Frantic Ford Funny Car time for 2010
The long awaited debut of the Frantic Ford AA/Fuel Coupe Nostalgia Funny Car is right around the corner. Car should be ready for active competition up and down the eastern seaboard this coming May-June 2010.
The team of Freddy Frey, Bob Rosetty, Bobby Frey & "Big Al" Liebmann are set to bring you a "Blast from the Past" with the return of the legendary Frantic Ford AA/Funny Car.
Current plans call for Team Frantic to be appearing at tracks primarily on the East Coast with possible dates in the Midwest if additional funding becomes available.
The new Mustang II will carry the same paint scheme that took the Frantic Ford to many victories back in the mid 1970's with the late, great Dodger Glenn at the controls. Paint on the new car will be applied once again by the legendary Bob Gerdes of Circus Custom Paint. Lettering on the car will be handled by the talented brush strokes of Glen, another renowned east coast legend.

Hi. My name is Carol Lauriat and I write a sports column for Quabbin Valley Voices, a free monthly newspaper in central Mass. On the weekend of Sept. 11, there is going to be a dragstrip reunion at Orange airport. We held drag races at the airport from the 1950s to 1970s, when a lot of the hot rod, now racing, greats raced when they were just starting out. I'm writing a column about the event and was wondering if you ever came to our town and would share some of your experiences. Hope to hear from you,

NAPA Auto Parts National Time Trials, Day 2

Near the end of a chilly Saturday testing session during the 2010 NAPA Auto Parts National Times, a drag racing legend and the rest of his team decided to steal the show and delight the remaining Firebird International Raceway crowd.
Super Chevy Show Series: Shoebox rules release
Kansas City (Jan. 22, 2010) - To help celebrate the 30th anniversary of Super Chevy Show, the series ownership group, SCSW, Inc., has finalized the details of its new “Shoebox Shootout” class for 2010. The heads-up class is designed to attract sedans, coupes and convertibles built from 1934 to 1962.
“Our goal is to develop an exciting new heads-up class populated by nostalgia looking vehicles fans can relate to," Super Chevy Show series General Manager, Tom Kreager, said. "We think this will just add to the exciting anniversary season of the Super Chevy Show series. There is already a lot of excitement built for this new class."
Shoebox Shootout
(Cars must be NHRA/IHRA legal per their ET and MPH)
1. Must be Chevy Bodied or powered:
a. All cars must be self starting and water cooled
b. Tow vehicles are not allowed
2. Bodies:
a. Any body style (1935 – 1962): Sedans, Coupes, Convertibles, etc… No Corvettes, Corvairs, or Chevy powered T – Birds
b. Stock appearing with working doors and all window openings maintained
c. Minimum wheelbase is 90 inches but may be lengthen to 130 inches
d. Full suspension with working shocks
e. Driver must be offset to the left, no center steer cars
f. Aluminum or fiberglass body parts may be used
g. Nose (front of vehicle) must be kept stock appearing and not streamlined or tilted back
h. Older style “flat top” hood scoops allowed. Maximum height 12”. Modern scoops not allowed
i. Exposed carbs and intake permitted
j. Spoilers are permitted up to 14”. No air may pass under them and they must be attached to the rear deck lid. Spill plates are limited to a maximum of 6”
k. Wings and airfoils are not allowed
3. Engine:
a. No cubic inch limit
b. One engine per car
4. Power Adders:
a. Any number of carburetors
b. NOS or Blowers permitted
c. No Electronic Fuel Injection or Carburetors
5. Fuel:
a. Alcohol or Gasoline permitted. No Nitro Methane
6. Minimum Weight (including driver):
a. Big Block – 2900 lbs
b. Small Block – 2700 lbs
c. Add 200 lbs. for Nitrous or Blowers
7. Race Format (1/4 mile):
a. Qualifying: Quickest 16 cars (0 to 10.99)
b. Eliminations: Full Tree/Handicapped Start
c. Handicap Dial – within 0.20 of your quickest qualifying time
d. Lane Choice: Quickest pass from qualifying and then previous round
8. Purse ($4800 total)
a. $2000 to win; $1000 to runner – up; $500 semis; $100 to quarters; $50 to eighths
b. Special Trophy, Magazine coverage
c. Options: Frantic Four (4) on Saturday evening: heads – up, trophy to win, (minimal or no cash)
d. Non qualifiers may compete in Bracket 1
