ADRL Dressing Up Starting Line Regulations

O’FALLON, MO (Apr. 5, 2010) — In order to continue to reduce the risk and help keep national events running efficiently, the American Drag Racing League (ADRL) is introducing a starting-line dress code for its race teams at all national events.

Beginning Apr. 23-24, at the ADRL Hardee’s Georgia Drags VI at South Georgia Motorsports Park, all ADRL crew members are strongly encouraged to wear matching collared shirts. These uniform shirts will become mandatory for all starting-line crew members May 21-22, at the ADRL U.S. Drags III at Virginia Motorsports Park.

“As the ADRL grows we want to recognize and address things to reduce the risk and make things more efficient for everyone involved,” ADRL Director of Security William Vandiver said.

“Just being able to more easily identify team members will help ADRL and track staff to keep the starting area free of congestion, which greatly reduces the chances of injury and allows drivers to move into position more quickly and keep the show on track.”

Procedures for obtaining restricted-area access remain unchanged, requiring a pre-race visit to the ADRL’s trackside Summit Membership Zone, where up to six crew members plus the driver or rider for each professional class entry will be permitted a non-transferable, restricted-area armband after signing the appropriate paperwork. Pro Jr. Dragster entries will be allowed restricted-area armbands for up to three uniformed team members, plus the driver.

Team members will have to leave the immediate starting area once their qualifying or elimination pass is over, but a nearby, restricted-access sponsor and team viewing zone will be provided at all ADRL venues.

The ADRL strongly suggests placing the official ADRL logo (minimum 3.5 inches wide), on the upper chest area (left or right) of all new team shirts. Though not mandated for 2010, wearing the ADRL logo will be required for all restricted-area crew members next year. The official ADRL logo may be obtained by e-mailing ADRL Director of Graphic Design Tommy Rogers at tommy@ADRL.us.

“We are sensitive to the cost involved in acquiring team uniforms, which is why we’ve chosen to delay requiring the ADRL logo until next season for any teams that are already outfitted for 2010,” ADRL Executive Vice President Jeff Fortune said. “There are many options out there for team shirts, but our recommendation is for teams to support their ADRL partners, including Impact Racing, Champion Systems, Simpson Racing and Stateline Motorsports Apparel.”

PHOTO: Crew shirts similar to those worn by Pete Berner’s Extreme Pro Stock team, winner of the Stateline Motorsports Apparel Best Appearing Crew award at the 2010 ADRL season opener last month in Houston, will become mandatory for all starting-line crew members May 21-22, at the ADRL U.S. Drags III at Virginia Motorsports Park.

Quarter Mile Entertainment Foundation receives formal charitable status from I.R.S.

A message to all members of Project 1320-Pioneers of the Quarter Mile

Parma Heights, Ohio (April 5, 2010) – In a notification dated March 31, 2010, the Quarter Mile Entertainment Foundation (QMEF) received formal acceptance from the Internal Revenue Service of the Foundation’s request for recognition as a Section 501(c)(3) organization. Under the provisions of the Internal Revenue code, the Foundation is now considered a public, not for profit, educational charitable organization.

Prior to the formal acceptance by the Internal Revenue Service, the Quarter Mile Entertainment Foundation had been operating under the status of a “pending” Section 501(c)(3) organization. The Foundation had been previously granted charitable foundation status by the State of Ohio.

“This is a watershed moment,” observed Traci Hrudka, Chairman of the Quarter Mile Entertainment Foundation. “While the ‘pending’ status gave us most of the provisions of being a not-for-profit charitable organization, there was always the potential the Section 501(c)(3) might not be granted, for some reason.

“With this acceptance from the Internal Revenue Service, the last bit of doubt has been removed.”

While the acceptance of the Foundation as a Section 501(c)(3) organization by the I.R.S. does not change any of the formal structure or operation, it does, however solidify the Foundation’s stature, and allows the organization to provide financial supporters with documentation their fiscal backing is tax deductable for the tax year in which it was made. All contributions made during the Foundation’s period as a pending Section 501(c)(3) organization have always been tax deductable under the provisions of the I.R.S.

Ms. Hrudka cautions contributors from outside the United States that this notification impacts only citizens of the United States, and citizens of other countries cannot claim a deduction from their tax liabilities.

O'REILLY AUTO PARTS NHRA SPRING NATIONALS PREVIEW

HOT START HAS LEGENDARY FORCE BACK IN FULL THROTTLE SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP HUNT

BAYTOWN, Texas – For all those so-called drag racing experts who officially wrote John Force off as an NHRA dominator in the Funny Car class, and said his world championship total is finished at 14 titles, it’s time to eat a little crow.

Who could blame Force if he feels just a little bit of sweet satisfaction right about now?

After enduring a tough stretch of seasons marred by tragedy, turmoil, crashes and mediocrity, NHRA legend John Force has finally emerged from all the chaos and regained his swagger.

He got it back through hard work, sweat, dedication and an incredible desire. It is the same desire that led him from a middle of the pack performer in the late ‘80s to the bigger-than-life 14-time world champ throughout the ‘90s and early 2000s.

owever, this time around, he needs to show the world that last season’s dismal performance – his worst on record since 1984 – was not the true John Force. He wants to prove that he’s still got what it takes to overcome incredible odds and win races and championships once again in the highly-volatile 7,000-horsepower world of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

“I have always been the kind of guy when somebody tears me down, it builds my strength,” Force said last week during a teleconference with national media. “If a driver gets after me, it makes me work harder. I was like that as a kid playing Pop Warner football. I never had a lot of talent, but I stayed after it, and I lived it.”

The 60-year-old Force, who has won twice in three final round appearances in the first four races of the 23-event 2010 season, will try to keep his hot start going as the tour heads to Texas for the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park. Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Ashley Force Hood (Funny Car), Ron Krisher (Pro Stock) and Craig Treble (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are the defending winners of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event which will be televised on ESPN2 HD.

"I’m on a real big high right now and just excited,” said Force, who opened the season with an emotional win at the 50th Kragen O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals in Southern California and last week made history by winning the much-anticipated inaugural NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in the racing hotbed of Charlotte, N.C.

Entering the event in Houston, Force holds an 89-point advantage over a strong group of rivals, including second place driver Ron Capps, talented Jack Beckman, defending world champ Robert Hight and daughter Force Hood, the defending event winner. Sure, there’s still a lot of races left in the season before the official talk of championship contenders begins, but Force certainly likes his current situation. And, he’s proven that he’s ready to work even harder to get back what he’s lost over the years.

“It feels real good because I’m not getting any younger, but I do live in the gym,” Force said. “And as long as I can do the game and react at the starting line like Robert Hight, Ashley or Bob Tasca or any of them, a lot of great young drivers out there, I will do it.”

During his career, seven of Force’s NHRA-record 128 career victories have come at HRP, his last in 2002. The track’s near sea level elevation makes it an ideal place for NHRA teams to produce jaw-dropping performances. No doubt his newly aligned crew chief tandem of Mike Neff and Austin Coil will be anxious to put a quick tune-up on Force’s Castrol GTX High-Mileage Ford Mustang.

“I like Texas,” Force said. “It’s fun to go there and you can really run good if the conditions are right. I think I got my hundredth win there. We’ve been pretty consistent there over the years…and we’re just looking forward to getting back there.”

In Top Fuel, seven-time world champ Schumacher, winner of the last six season titles, is once again in the championship mix in his U.S. Army dragster. This season he is getting tough competition from teammate and veteran driver Cory McClenathan, a two-time winner this season who is chasing his long-overdue first world championship title and currently leads the point standings. Schumacher’s longtime rival Larry Dixon, driver of the Al-Anabi Racing dragster and a two-time winner at HRP, and biker turned nitro driver Antron Brown, who has been solid in his Matco Tools dragster since leaving the Pro Stock Motorcycle class in 2007, are also in the championship hunt. A resurgent Doug Kalitta, driver of the Technicoat dragster, has advanced to three final rounds and is a win waiting to happen.

Defending world champ Mike Edwards is once again leading the Pro Stock contingent in his Penhall/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP. A three-time HRP winner, the Oklahoma native has recorded three victories this season and one runner-up finish in four races and holds a commanding 181-point lead over second place Jason Line, who has one win and one runner-up finish this season in his Summit Racing GXP. Team Mopar’s Allen Johnson and three-time world champ Greg Anderson also are among the pre-race favorites, along with Greg Stanfield and Phoenix runner-up Bob Yonke.

Past world champions Eddie Krawiec and Matt Smith have each earned victories this season in Pro Stock Motorcycle competition, but defending series titlist Hector Arana sits atop the point standings on his Lucas Oil Buell. Shawn Gann, Steve Johnson, Andrew Hines and two-time HRP winners Karen Stoffer and Craig Treble will be working hard at this event to improve their standing in the Full Throttle Series top 10.

PAGE MOVES TO NUMBER ONE IN TWO CLASSES AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY

(Commerce, GA – April 3) The Saturday Insanity series is gaining ground with racers, reinventing competition with a sense of traditionalism. Ricky Page has enjoyed success in the past few weeks, first winning Super Pro in the Summit ET series, followed by a win in the 7.50 Heads Up class. New for 2010, the Old Skool category was split into two classes: Radial Flyer and 10.5 Slick Tire. The 6.50 and 7.50 Index classes set a fixed ET goal for racers, encouraging them to run closest to a determined index. The Open Comp (Full Body) category is basically bracket racing, but with a pro-tree starting system. The Old Skool category is about the old days of racing, making whoever crossed the finish line first the victor.

The 6.50 heads-up class was led by finalists David Brand (Covington, GA) and Robby Brown (Loganville, GA). Brand rolled in with a silver ’68 Camaro, a striking contrast to Brown’s ’98 S-10 pickup. Both men were close to the finish, but Brand’s 6.53 second run at 105.79 mph beat out Brown’s 6.52 ET at 103.95 mph due to a better reaction time. Brand, having competed in the class at Silver Dollar Raceway, conquered on his first time in the 6.50 class at Atlanta Dragway. “I like it!” Brand remarked; of course it’s a good day when you can establish yourself as the top in points. Stan Sinack (Lilburn, GA) finished in the semi-finals in a ’69 Dart.

Mustangs dominated the 7.50 heads-up category; finalist Ricky Page (Monroe, GA) raced a ’90 model against Shane Williams (Knoxville, TN) in a slightly newer ’99 model. Williams beat himself by .004 of a second, running a 4.96 ET at 89.24 mph; Page stayed true with 7.51 finish at 90.78 mph. “The car was dead-on all day,” Page noted, “I’m on a roll this year.” Page now holds the top position in points for the Summit ET Series Super Pro class as well as the 7.50 class. Page thanked Mike “Peanut” Smith, and added, “another big thanks to my wife Angela for letting me spend all our money at the dragstrip.” Fellow Mustang enthusiast Randall Roop (’66 Mustang – Canton, GA) and Sean Garner (’89 S-10 pickup – Oxford, GA) ended the day as semi-finalists.

2009 7.50 champion John Norris (Royston, GA) made up for his losses in the 7.50 class today by taking his ’86 Camaro to the Open Comp finals, against 2009 Summit Series Pro champion Chad Brewer (Canton, GA) in a borrowed ’68 Camaro (lent by friend Larry Chance after his ’67 Camaro experienced a broken torque converter). Brewer lost ground with a slow reaction time, and despite his dead-on run of 6.72 seconds at 90.50 mph, Norris had the tighter run at 7.41 seconds on a 7.35 dial-in, at 93.46 mph. Norris plans to continue competing in both the 7.50 and Open Comp classes: “I want to thank the track, Wade Bryant Automotive, Kenneth and Jimmy Mason, and my wife Stacy.” Stewarts Watts (Demorest, GA) finished third in an ’84 Cutlass.

Mustangs also took charge of the Old Skool Radial Flyer category, but this time all had a South Carolina locale. Brian Bolt (’85 Mustang – Seneca, SC) challenged Bobby McNair (’95 Mustang – West Union, SC) in the finals. McNair’s car ran a bit slow, finishing in 6.23 seconds at 115.18 mph, following behind Bolt’s bolt to the win stripe in 5.83 seconds at 125.02 mph. Bolt reported changing his entire tuning combination, and gave “thanks to “Granny” for paying attention to all the small details,” and to “the old GHB (Lynn Rogers) for helping, along with Pro Fab Race Cars and Durham Racing Engines.” In true Ricky Bobby style, Bolt simply stated: “I wanna go fast.” Scott Black (Seneca, SC) was the Radial Flyer semi-finalist in his ’00 Mustang.

Tim Davis (Flowery Branch, GA) raced his way to the Old Skool 10.5 Slick Tire finals in a silver ’80 HR Malibu, against Jeff Voyles (Hoschton, GA), who came to play in a ’92 Mustang. Voyles left the starting line first, making a 5.99 second run at 117.77 mph, just behind Davis, who caught up and set off the win lights with his 5.78 second run at 123.16 mph. Voyles finished third in his last race, and after having placed second today, feels ready to graduate to first in his next competition. Davis credited his win to his wife April and his kids “for all their support,” and thanked HR Race Cars and Monte Smith Performance. Wesley Anglin (Carlton, GA) finished in the semifinals, in a ’51 HR Ford Truck.

Draglist.com servers back on line!

We are back up after about a day. Don't have the details on the outage yet, but if I know my web hosts, they were working all 24 hours to get us back on line. All our family of sites are back up: Draglist.com, eDrags.com, 60sfunnycars.com, 70sfunnycars.com, 80sfunnycars.com, and all the rest. Welcome back!

Draglist.com servers down

Wish this was an April's Fool prank, but unfortunately it's not. The web server on which all the Draglist.com sites reside is down. The hosting team is working hard to restore it, but it's been about 18 hours so far. This outage affects Draglist.com, eDrags.com, 60s, 70s, and 80s Funny Cars.com, and all our other sites. (DragBlog.com and Dragphoto.com are still online as they are hosted elsewhere). We will let everyone know as soon as we get back online.
