National Guard ADRL Gearing Up for PRI Show

O’FALLON, MO (Dec. 4, 2009)—The on-track action may be over for the year, but the National Guard American Drag Racing League (ADRL) remains at full speed heading into the 22nd annual Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Trade Show Dec. 10-12, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

The American Drag Racing League and its affiliated Arabian Drag Racing League will share space this year in Booth 609 on the trade show’s main floor.

“We’re looking forward to our biggest and best PRI experience ever,” declared Kenny Nowling, president and CEO of both the American and Arabian Drag Racing Leagues. “I invite everyone to drop by Booth 609 and check out what the ADRL has planned for 2010 and beyond. All I can say right now is that it’s going to be innovative, entertaining and exciting, so drop by and see us.”

The National Guard ADRL also is preparing to cap off the PRI weekend with its Racer’s Appreciation and Awards Gala II, beginning at 7 p.m. Dec. 12, at the at the luxurious Wyndham Orlando Resort, just down the street from the trade show.

A limited number of tickets remain available to the Gala for $50 each, payable by credit card, check or money order, and must be paid for in advance, as tickets will not be available at the door. All current National Guard ADRL drivers and riders are entitled to one free ticket and each official series sponsor is offered two complimentary passes, but they must RSVP in order to reserve their seats.

ADRL's Top Insider Gives Fans Real Time Results from Qatar Race Club on Twitter

O’FALLON, MO (Dec. 4, 2009) – Beginning at 8 a.m. (EST) on Friday, Dec. 4, American Drag Racing League and Arabian Drag Racing League President and CEO Kenny Nowling will be tweeting real time results and commentary covering the hot racing action happening at Qatar Race Club in Doha, Qatar via Twitter for the leagues’ stateside fans.

IHRA's Florida Opener Provides Maximum Bang for Sportsman Buck

There is nothing quite like racing in southern Florida – especially during the month of January.

While most of the country is digging out from under buckets of snow or trying to stay warm amid treacherous temperatures, the people of south Florida enjoy mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine during the winter months.

So what better way to start the year than with a double dose of south Florida sun and fun with a pair of sportsman races promising to give drivers a well earned vacation as well as four days of track time and two shots at the 2010 Tournament of Champions.

“We are very excited to kick off the season in Florida this year. More importantly, thanks to Immokalee Raceway’s Ralph Hester for continuing to spread the IHRA word in the south, we have a great package set up for IHRA racers to start the year,” said Skooter Peaco, VP of Race Operations.

Beginning with the Nitro Jam season opener at Palm Beach International Raceway, IHRA sportsman competitors will have two shots at the 2010 Tournament of Champions and an opportunity to accumulate points with the Summit Pro-Am Tour.

The 2010 season will open with the Palm Beach Nitro Jam January 29-30 and will offer drivers the first opportunity to qualify for the TOC with two days of qualifying and eliminations capped off with the crowning of champions Saturday afternoon.

The following weekend Ralph Hester will once again open the Summit Pro-Am Tour season at Immokalee Regional Raceway with a double Summit Pro-Am Tour weekend and the first Champion Systems Sportsman Nationals of the year.

The Heat Wave divisional will open the season February 6-7 with a double wild card event. Racers attending this event regardless of their home division will be able to use these two events as a divisional claim.

The event will feature a test ‘n tune on Friday followed by the first of two Summit Pro-Am Tour divisional events on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday’s event will also double as a Sportsman Nationals event with drivers being able to secure a spot in the Tournament of Champions and claim divisional points.

When all is said and done a potential 14 drivers will be eligible for the Tournament of Champions just one month into the New Year and many more will be able to start 2010 with a tan.

“What better way to start the year off right than offering drivers two shots at the Tournament of Champions and a bit of a vacation in the process,” Peaco said. “Overall this will give IHRA racers two events to hit and make travel sense out of the trip to Florida for everyone.”

ADRL Community Responds To Facebook Fan Pages and Increased Twitter Activity

 The National Guard ADRL re-launched its Official ADRL Fan Page on Facebook last week (www.facebook.com/ADRLFanPage) and the ADRL community was quick to get into the action. Additionally the National Guard ADRL set up two new Twitter pages (www.twitter.com/ADRLKenny and www.twitter.com/ADRLFanPage).  

Several thousand new members joined the groups within the first few days, during which a flurry of activity followed, including live Twitter coverage from the Arabian Drag Racing League in Qatar by Kenny Nowling, president and CEO of both the Arabian Drag Racing League and the American Drag Racing League.

Fans also have begun posting pictures, personal stories and making plans for the 2010 season. News updates, special offers, giveaways, and behind-the-scenes photos and video will be part of the long list of activities the National Guard ADRL plans for members and followers in December.

“We are excited about this becoming a very active club,” National Guard ADRL Director of Business Development Brian Evans said. “We look for all of our fans to join the page, then go through and suggest it to their friends.”

Evans also pointed out the plans for fresh content, contests and announcements will continue to satisfy both new and dedicated National Guard ADRL fans, and encourages the community to continue to engage in discussions and forums, post pictures, network with members and keep the activity level high.

The National Guard ADRL team will use this page as a communication tool to connect and strengthen the ADRL community, but ADRL Director of Media and Communications Amanda LaPlante sees a larger purpose.

Twig Zeigler Documentary Now Available

GLENDORA, Calif. (Nov. 24, 2009) – NHRA officials released its 2010 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series schedule today, which features 43 events, with a minimum of five races conducted in each of NHRA’s seven divisions.

The 2010 schedule also includes the addition of a new event May 14-16 at Tulsa Raceway Park in Tulsa, Okla. in the South Central Division.

NHRA Lucas Oil Series drivers in seven categories compete for valuable points leading to divisional and national championships and a share of the $561,000 purse. The series also includes three sportsman-focused national events: the JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals in Belle Rose, La.; the JEGS NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals in Fontana, Calif.; and the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals in Columbus, Ohio.

The 2010 season marks the ninth year of Lucas Oil’s support of NHRA sportsman racers in a partnership that extends through 2012.

Headlined by the powerful Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car classes, the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series allows racers to compete for a championship close to home. Other categories that compete in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series are Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. Some divisions also opt to run additional categories, including Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley-Davidson.

Individual divisions may also have additional bonus programs available to racers.

Some prominent graduates of the NHRA Lucas Oil Series who have gone on to successful careers in the NHRA Full Throttle Series include Brandon Bernstein, Morgan Lucas, Shawn Langdon, Ashley Force Hood, and Jeg Coughlin.

NHRA JR. DRAG RACING LEAGUE CONFERENCE FINALS HEADING BACK TO BRISTOL, DENVER IN 2010

GLENDORA, Calif. (Dec. 2, 2009) – NHRA has announced that the 2010 NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Eastern and Western Conference Finals events will return to Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway and Bandimere Speedway in Denver. The Western Conference Finals will take place July 8-10 and the Eastern Conference Finals are slated for July 29-31.

The dates are a departure from previous years in that the Western Conference Finals will come before the Eastern Conference event and that there will be two weeks between events instead of one.

“We are very glad to have the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Eastern and Western Conference Finals returning to two such great drag racing facilities,” said Eric Lotz, NHRA director of Field Marketing and Contingency Programs. “Both tracks are very family-oriented facilities and know how to make the Junior racers and their families feel welcome and make sure everyone has a great time.”

The Western Conference Finals have been at Bandimere Speedway since NHRA adopted the Eastern/Western format in 2000 and Bristol Dragway first hosted the Eastern Conference Finals in 2004. Nearly 1,000 kids compete for individual and team honors at the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Eastern and Western Conference Finals, and nearly $100,000 in savings bonds are given away at each event.

“We are pleased to once again host the Junior Drag Racing League Eastern Conference Finals in Thunder Valley,” said Bristol Dragway President and General Manager Jeff Byrd. “Several drivers’ professional careers began because of their time in the Junior Dragsters and we are proud to play a role in that development due to this program. And who knows? A future NHRA champion may win the first Wally of his or her career here in Thunder Valley.”

“It is an honor to again host the NHRA Junior Western Conference Finals in 2010,” said Bandimere Speedway Vice President and general manager, John Bandimere III. “Bandimere Speedway was founded with youth and family as the priority and the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League has provided an ideal format to carry on the 52 year tradition. The youth racers competing today are the future of our sport and the future is sure to be bright with the caliber of talent Junior Racing has produced.”

Created in 1992, the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League allows kids between the ages of 8 and 17 to experience the thrill of motorsports competition in a controlled environment at tracks in each of NHRA’s seven geographic divisions. The NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League creates family involvement in drag racing at an affordable level. Many of the league’s former participants have gone on to compete in other NHRA classes. Top Fuel racers Del Cox Jr., Shawn Langdon (a two-time Super Comp national champion), Morgan Lucas, Spencer Massey, and J.R. Todd; Pro Stock drivers Erica Enders, Danny Gruninger, Rickie Jones, and Richie Stevens Jr.; Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Katie Sullivan; eight-time national event winner Brad Plourd; and three-time Division 3 Top Alcohol Funny Car champion Mick Snyder are among the league’s graduates.

CASTELLANA & BALOOSHI READY FOR BATTLE IN ROUND 2 AT QATAR RACE CLUB

(12-1-09) DOHA, Qatar – Two of Al-Anabi Racing’s in-house world champions, recently crowned ADRL Pro Nitrous champ Khalid Al-Balooshi and former IHRA Pro Modified world champion Mike Castellana, are prepared to once again do battle on the outlaw eighth-mile and look to create a second straight all Al-Anabi Racing final during Round 2 of the Arabian Drag Racing League series at the Qatar Race Club.

After a pair of stunning performances out of the Al-Anabi Racing Pro Nitrous hot rods, including a mind-blowing 3.82-second, 196.24mph blast out of Balooshi’s trusty ’68 Camaro to take the No. 1 spot in qualifying and a 3.93/191.75mph effort from Castellana, the duo met in the final round for all the marbles, with no one being more satisfied than His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Thani.

“To have our two Pro Nitrous cars in the final,” said Sheikh Khalid, “is exactly the result we were looking for from this incredible team that we’ve put together. With the horsepower provided by Shannon Jenkins and David Reher and the addition of Jeff Perley and Justin Elkes, we’ve got a program here that is going to be very hard to beat.”

With nearly two weeks between Round 1 and 2 of the ADRL series, the Al-Anabi Racing Pro Nitrous team has maximized the downtime, compiling parts and reviewing data to elevate the performance and consistency of their nitrous oxide-assisted doorslammers.

“We came home with a laundry list of things we wanted to bring over, RacePak sensors and various other items that we’ve seen success with in Pro Stock, that we think will be beneficial to this program,” said Justin Elkes, a data acquisition specialist. “With an abundance of horsepower, which is something new to us Pro Stock guys, we’re really excited to be working closely with Shannon [Jenkins] to put apply this power to the racetrack.”

Elkes continued, “We’ve got more than enough power to get these nitrous cars well into the 3.70s and that’s what we’re looking to do, but we also want to be able to do it consistently.”

With one round of racing and a victory already under their belt, the Al-Anabi Racing Pro Nitrous team is well positioned to make a run at the first-ever Arabian Drag Racing League Pro Nitrous world championship in 2009/2010, but know that it won’t be an easy task, especially with the influx of competition from the surrounding Arabian Gulf Region countries.

Jeff Perley, best known for his time spent as crew chief for the Greg Anderson/Jason Line NHRA Pro Stock program that netted four world championships, referred to his first trip to Doha and the Qatar Race Club as an eye-opening experience, and has high expectations for the entire Al-Anabi Racing organization in the future.

“It’s almost been hard to grasp,” said Perley before boarding the Qatar Airways flight to Doha on Sunday. “It’s been an incredible experience and to see the Qatar Race Club, which is undeniably one of the best racing surfaces I’ve ever been on, and all the resources that we have to work with – it’s amazing.”

“I’ve got a lot of confidence in what we can do with these cars in terms of performance, and running well is at the forefront of our minds, but I’m equally excited about the opportunity to be a part of the Pro Modified movement. We’ve seen this class explode in popularity over the course of the last few years and we’re hoping to help usher this category into the top tier of the sport.”

Qualifying for Round 2 of the Arabian Drag Racing League series at the Qatar Race Club begins at 7:00 PM AST on Thursday, December 3rd, with a second round scheduled for 9:00 PM. A final round of qualifying will take place at 5:00 PM AST on Thursday the 4th, with eliminations getting underway at 7:00 PM AST.

Under the watchful eye of crew chief Frank “Ace” Manzo, Sheikh Khalid piloted his Al-Anabi Racing, Tim McAmis-built ’68 Camaro to an outstanding 3.74-seconds pass at more than 204 miles per hour. Both numbers are not far off the official series records held by Tennessee racer Von Smith, the defending Arabian Drag Racing League Pro Extreme champion and winner of Round 1 at the same track two weeks ago.

“It couldn’t have gone any better, straight as an arrow all the way to the finish line,” stated Kenny Nowling, president and CEO of both the Arabian and O’Fallon, Missouri-based American Drag Racing Leagues, who is in Qatar with several U.S.-based race officials to help run the event. “Sheikh Khalid is a natural-born driver and with a true champion like ‘Ace’ turning the wrenches, they’ve already become a formidable force in Pro Extreme over here.”

GLENDORA, Calif. (Dec. 1, 2009) — Several members of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series community, including President Tom Compton, will be featured prominently over the next two days at the 10th annual Motorsports Marketing Forum presented by Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal.

The two-day event, which is being held at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, includes eight panels/interviews today and three more tomorrow.

Compton was part of the opening panel discussion today entitled “State of Motorsports: A Year of Change.” The panel included NASCAR CMO Steve Phelps, Las Vegas Motor Speedway President and GM Chris Powell, IMS and Indy Racing League President and CEO Jeffrey Belskus, and Feld Entertainment COO Ken Hudgens.

In the day’s “Featured Interview” at 4:30 p.m. PT, entitled “The Forces, a Dynamic Duo in the NHRA,” John Force and Ashley Force Hood will discuss their plans for the future of Force Racing and how they work together to engage their fan-base and promote NHRA.
