Division 2 wraps up season at Darlington, only one race remaining in 2013
DARLINGTON, S.C. (September 9, 2013) – Welcome back to the IHRA, Mark Miles.
After a few years off from IHRA competition, Flintstone, Georgia's Miles has returned in a big way in 2013, winning four times in five finals including his second win in a row at the Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL doubleheader at Darlington Dragway.
Day 1 Quick Rod winner Mark Miles
Miles, who won Quick Rod at Carolina Dragway one week prior, repeated a trip to the winner's circle with a win over Danny Waters Jr. for his fourth win of the season. Miles leads both the Quick Rod and Super Rod standings in Division 2.
Jeff Longhany also had a strong showing at the South Carolina track, winning Stock and finishing runner-up in Super Stock. Other winners during the Division 2 doubleheader were Jim Cairnes and Stacy Hall (Top Sportsman), Mandy Teets-Seal and Steve Hester (Top Dragster), Brian Seate and Michael Crumpler (Super Stock), B.J. Bianchi and Longhany (Stock), Miles and John Dustin (Quick Rod), Chris Lewis and Ernie Knight (Super Rod) and Russell Penny and Nick Womack (Hot Rod).
Junior Dragster winners were Brittney Dial and Taylor Bouldrey (Master), Dylan Blanton and Mia Schultz (Advanced) and Tyler Duff and Wallace Wilson (Beginner).
Day 2 Stock winner Jeff Longhany
Miles continued his incredible 2013 season with a win and a semifinal finish in Quick Rod at Darlington, taking the win over Waters during Race 1. Miles went five rounds during Saturday's competition, culminating with a close double-breakout victory. Miles had a .013 light and ran a 5.697 in the 5.70 index class at 138.80 miles per hour, while Waters had a .020 light and ran a 5.689 at 132.31 – a difference of a few tenths at the line. Miles also made the semis on Sunday, losing to Dale Harrison.
Wade, North Carolina's Jeff Longhany produced the only pair of finals during the Darlington doubleheader, recording a win over Missy Phillips and Stock and finishing runner-up to Brian Seate in Super Stock. In one of the biggest classes of the weekend, Longhany's victory over Phillips was a memorable as Longhany's .011 package trumped Phillips' .024 package to take the win. Longhany had a .009 light and ran a 6.752 on a 6.75.
In the other Stock final 2012 world championship runner-up B.J. Bianchi collected his second win of the season over Jeff Gardiner. Bianchi used a .009 light to take the win, offsetting Gardiner's .038 tree. Michael Crumpler rounded out the Super Stock/Stock categories with a Day 2 Super Stock win over Corey Taylor.
Day 2 Super Stock winner Michael Crumpler
Defending Division 2 Top Dragster champion Steve Dweck continued his rise up the D2 standings as he battles Victor Fera for the crown in IHRA's fastest class. Dweck recorded his third runner-up finish of the season to Mandy Teets-Seal as the Manassas, Virginia racer recorded a .016 light and ran a 4.711 on a 4.71 dial to defeat Dweck.
John Dustin (Quick Rod) and Nick Womack (Hot Rod) both collected their second wins of the season over Dale Harrison and Daryl Griffin respectively.
The busy Darlington weekend concluded the Division 2 racing season with only one race remaining in 2013 for racers to gain points, either in-division or out of division at Farmington Dragway later this month.
