Sonoma Raceway, Sonoma, CA - After a consistent and mistake-free weekend performance, Goodguys Rod & Custom Association President Marc Meadors won the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod class at last weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Division 7 Series event at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, CA driving the "Pure Hell2" '69 Pro Mod Camaro. It was the Goodguys Racing Team's 2nd big win in the last 30 days and marked the 5th time Meadors has made a West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod final round this season. In fact, the Pleasanton, California based team has made the final round in all five WCOPM series races they've entered this season – the only team that can make that claim.
The quality 8-car field (13 cars in total attempted to qualify) at Sonoma ended up being the quickest and fastest ever in West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod competition showing just how far this group of renegade Pro Mod racers have progressed in performance and equipment since the class made its debut in 2007.
After qualifying 3rd Saturday with a 5.871/251.11mph, Meadors drew Jay Diedrichs' 1970 Camaro in Sunday's round one eliminations. In what would turn out to be his quickest run of the weekend, Meadors left first cutting a .029 reaction time then threw down a 5.853/250.69mph blast to cover the loser's 5.972/248.11.
Meadors drew #2 qualifier Mike Maggio in the semi's and used another .029 reaction time to get the jump off the line, running away from Maggio with a 5.837 252.57mph winning run – turning in his fastest speed of the weekend in the process. The big win over Maggio set up the final round against longtime friend and former Goodguys AA/Supercharged racer Sean Renteria driving the Renteria Bros '64 Plymouth Valiant.
The final featured another heavy dose of Goodguys Goodtimes as the big blown "Pure Hell 2" '69 Camaro powered to a decisive 5.885/244.96 mph winner to Renteria's troubled 6.282/240.08. A happy Meadors beamed in the winner's circle holding his first-ever NHRA "Wally" trophy. "Our team earned this trophy and this win here today," he said. "Not only did we beat the quickest and fastest field of West Coast Outlaw Pro Mods ever, we made our best three runs of the weekend on Sunday – when it matters most. I couldn't be more proud of my guys."
In addition to the bronzed trophy, Meadors and the team left town with the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Series points lead with three event remaining on the 2013 schedule. The Goodguys Racing Team will be right back in action next weekend again at Sonoma Raceway to take part in a Pro Mod exhibition during the NHRA Mellow Yellow Sonoma Nationals July 26-28.
Joining Meadors on the Goodguys Racing Team is crew chief Jason Bunker and crew members Billy Fereira, Danny Miller and Greg Lee.
