Ashley Force Hood, Larry Dixon, Mike Edwards, Robert Hight, and Frank Manzo also selected by the prestigious Motorsports Media Voting Panel to AARWBA All-America Teams
GLENDORA, Calif. (Nov. 30, 2009) — Two-time Jerry Titus Award winner Tony Schumacher headlines a list of five NHRA drivers named to the American Auto Racing Writers & Broadcasters Association All-America Teams.
Schumacher was named to the First Team; Ashley Force Hood was named to the Second Team; Larry Dixon, Mike Edwards and Robert Hight were named to the Honorable-Mention Team.
The Jerry Titus Award, which is given in remembrance of the late racer/journalist, will be presented to the top vote-getter among the eight First-Team drivers at the conclusion of the AARWBA All-America ceremonies in Brownsburg, Ind. on Jan. 16.
According to the AARWBA release, just two drivers – separated by just two votes – are contenders for this year’s Jerry Titus Award and “one is not at all unexpected but the other is a high surprise.”
Schumacher, a Titus Award winner in 2006 and 2008, is joined on the First-Team by Dario Franchitti (Open Wheel), Mark Martin (Stock Car), Jon Fogarty/Alex Gurney (Road Racing), Donny Schatz (Short Track), Ron Hornaday (Touring Series) and J.R. Hildebrand (At-Large).
Schumacher, driver of the U.S. Army dragster, won his sixth straight and seventh overall NHRA Full Throttle Series Top Fuel championship in 2009 and this is his seventh selection as an AARWBA First-Team All-America.
One driver from each of seven categories is elected to the First Team, one more to the Second Team, and all drivers receiving at least five percent of the vote (minimum five votes) earn honorable mention.
Force Hood, third-year driver of the Castrol GTX Ford Mustang, earned her first All-America recognition with two wins, 39 round wins (t-2 in Funny Car) and she led all Funny Car drivers with six runners-up and six No. 1 qualifiers (4.17 avg. qualifying position).
Dixon, driver of the Al-Anabi dragster, compiled a 47-18 round-win record (.723 winning pct.) en route to his five wins and nine final rounds, he led all Top Fuel drivers with nine No. 1 qualifiers (2.57 avg. qualifying position) and he finished just two points behind Schumacher.
Edwards, driver of the A.R.T./Young Life Pontiac, earned his first career NHRA Full Throttle Series Pro Stock championship by storming through the six-race playoff (two wins, 15-4 round-win record) after finishing the regular season in third place.
Hight, driver of the Auto Club Ford Mustang, made a historical run through NHRA’s six-race playoff – winning three of six races and compiling an NHRA-best 15-3 round-win record – to win his first NHRA Full Throttle Series Funny Car title after finishing the regular season in 10th place.
NHRA Lucas Oil Series TAFC Champion Frank Manzo, who drives the Lucas Oil/JEG’s/Hoosier Tire Chevy Monte Carlo, was voted onto the AARWBA All-America Second-Team as an At-Large selection, giving NHRA six drivers on the team. Manzo added to his already-full trophy case in 2009 with an 13th national championship and a 19th divisional championship.
Information on the All-America Banquet is available at www.AARWBA.org. The banquet and ceremony is open to the public.

Tony Positano pleased with first year in Quick 32 Sportsman Series
Cayuga/TMP Top Dragster winner plans to return for 2010 season
TORONTO, ONTARIO (November 27, 2009) - “Wow. What an exciting season. We have really enjoyed it.”
Top Dragster driver Tony Positano joined the ranks of the newly-formed Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts in 2009 after competing locally in Top Dragster competition for the past two seasons.
The driver and team owner of the Mike Bos Slip Joint Dragster said the series was the right program at the right time for competitors such as him.
“This is a fantastic series,” noted Positano. “I’m proud to be a part of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series. It’s what we needed in Ontario.”
Positano missed the series opener at the Cayuga Dragway at TMP, but raced in the remaining five events. The highlight of his season was capturing the Top Dragster final during the September 19 event held at Cayuga.
Qualifying 14th in the 16-car field, Positano was able to eliminate number one qualifier Michael Hinbest of Orangeville, Ontario to take the Top Dragster title.
“We were surprised but certainly pleased we won,” he said. “It goes to show that you have to be there to play and win.”
Powered by a Stefko Racing Engines built 565-cubic inch engine, and fueled with a Magna Fuel 500 Pump with Pro Series 1250 Carb, the 245-inch wheelbase dragster also utilizes a Ron Shilling Powerglide.
Kelly Sams provides the Crew Chief duties, and the team’s sponsors include Lucas Oil and Vinylbilt Windows and Doors.
Positano mentioned another couple of highlights for the season, including a loss to fellow Quick 32 racer Michael Kalin of Youngstown, NY, at one race and then beating him at the next event and winning the Grudge Match race over the Labor Day weekend at the Grand Bend Motorplex over the Pontiac GTO doorcar of Michael Campolucci.
“That was quite a show, and quite a race,” he remarked about the win over Campolucci.
Positano mentioned he has no big plans for his car for 2010, other than a freshening-up with new Wiseco Pistons and trying to loose some weight on the car.
Positano also mentioned he wanted to thank several competitors:
“The Spiering family makes a great show at the races,” he said. “Carl is always available for advice, and Lisa is a great driver.
“I want to thank the hospitality of Darryl and Carol McMillen,” he added, “for their Friday night get-togethers at the track.
”I also want to thank my sponsors, including Steve Snowden of Lucas Oil Canada, for having faith in our race team, and Vinylbilt Windows and Doors, which have given me the opportunity to pursue our love and passion.
“And thanks the Quick 32 Sportsman Series sponsors, to Ron Shilling for his continued professional support, and to Kelly, my Crew Chief, for her commitment to a safe and successful race operation.”
Positano will return next year.
“The Quick 32 program gave us a purpose, a goal,” he said. “It also brought a great group of people together with a common pastime. We look forward to another rewarding and successful season in 2010.”
Tony Positano was the winner of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series Wiseco Piston Award for 2009.

About the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts:
The Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, www.Quick32.ca, of drag racing was started early in 2009 as an alternative for high-horsepower Sportsman-class teams to compete on a regular basis.
For 2009, dates included Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario, starting with the season opener on May 16 and 17 and the season-closer “Double Header” on September 19 and 20, and the South-western Ontario track of the Grand Bend Motorplex on June 27 and 28, the Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts August 15 and 16 and the Thunder by the Beach Weekend September 5 and 6.
With 32-car qualified fields comprised of the 16 quickest open wheeled cars (Top Dragster) and the 16 quickest door cars (Top Sportsman), the Quick 32 Sportsman Series featured the best in ET-style, dial-in drag racing, competing on a Sportsman ladder and pit door-slammers against dragsters in every race day final.
Competitors in this Ontario-based series must comply with the IHRA Top Dragster and Top Sportsman Safety rules and regulations, and the maximum dial-in will be 7.95 seconds for the quarter-mile.
This new venture provided $3000 to win for each event and $5000 for the annual Championship Point Award Series champion, payouts very popular with competitors and will provide large fields of race cars.
The Quick 32 Sportsman Series is committed in providing a professional atmosphere for its teams. It will also provide solid media and logistic support to ensure it becomes one of the most popular drag race series running Top Sportsman and Top Dragster race cars.
The Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts competed several times with the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA), www.PMRA.ca, as well as selected special events, offering fans a great show of drag racing.

FAN VOTE FOR GREATEST WINTERNATIONALS MOMENT OPENS TODAY
50TH ANNUAL KRAGEN O’REILLY NHRA WINTERNATIONALS TO RECOGNIZE ‘GREATEST MOMENT’ IN EVENT’S HISTORY
Fans will be able to vote on NHRA.com; winner will be announced Feb. 14, 2010
GLENDORA, Calif. (Nov. 25, 2009) — Since 1961, the legendary NHRA Winternationals has been thrilling NHRA race fans with the unveiling of innovative race cars, incredible rookie debuts, unprecedented firsts, and dramatic finishes that have provided a supercharged launch to NHRA seasons for five decades.
To help salute the milestone 50th anniversary Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals, coming to Auto Club Raceway at Pomona Feb. 11-14, NHRA fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite Winternationals moment of the past 49 years in a special month-long poll on NHRA.com.
Voting begins today at 5:30 p.m. ET on NHRA.com and will continue through to midnight, Dec. 31.
A panel of experts selected the top 25 moments in Winternationals history from which to choose. From the first NHRA victories of quarter-mile icons Don Garlits, Don Prudhomme, and Bill Jenkins or Shirley Shahan's breakthrough as the first woman to win a major NHRA event to the debut of "Big Daddy's" revolutionary rear-engined Top Fueler, the flying Hawaiian Funny Car, the Freight Train, Eddie Hill's Top Fuel blowover and more, they're all here.
Moments 6 through 25 will be revealed in reverse order on NHRA.com in the weeks before the 2010 event, and the top five will be announced during race week, culminating with the unveiling of the top moment during Sunday’s pre-race festivities at the 50th annual event.
Below, in chronological order, are the top 25 moments:
1963, Garlits Goes Big
Don Garlits already was a drag racing legend, but his first NHRA win, with a revolutionary and controversial winged Top Fuel dragster, really puts him on the map
1963, The Mystery Train
Bob Muravez, forbidden by his parents to drag race, wins Top Gas in the fabled Freight Train twin-engine dragster using the pseudonym Floyd Lippencott
1965-66, Hawaiian Domination
Car owner Roland Leong wins Top Fuel back to back, giving Don Prudhomme his first win in 1965 and Mike Snively his a year later
1966, Ladies Day
Shirley Shahan becomes the first woman to win a major drag racing national event eliminator title with her stunning victory in the popular Top Stock class
1968, Galloping Ponies
Ford crashes Mopar’s Stocker monopoly with a fleet of 10 Cobra Jet Mustangs, and Al Joniec, at the wheel of the Rice-Holman entry, collects the victory
1969, The Flyin’ Hawaiian
Roland’s Leong’s first Hawaiian Funny Car, an ill-handling, full-size Dodge Charger driven by Larry Reyes, takes flight and sails backward through the finish-line lights. The duo wins the race the following year
1970, ‘Grumpy’ Rules First Pro Stock Go
Crowd favorite Bill Jenkins wins NHRA’s first Pro Stock title, besting the previously unbeatable Sox & Martin team in the final with low e.t. of the meet
1971, Garlits Kicks ’em in the Rear
A year after a near-career-ending accident, Don Garlits wins Top Fuel with a revolutionary rear-engine dragster in its NHRA national event debut
1974, Roll Over, Ivo
Tommy Ivo barrel-rolls his beautiful Top Fuel dragster in the finish-line lights during qualifying in a fiery and car-destroying crash
1975, Garlits’ Gift
Don Garlits smokes the tires against Don Ewald in round one of Top Fuel, but Ewald is disqualified for crossing the centerline. Garlits wins the event and season title and admits that had he not won the Winternationals, he likely would not have pursued the championship
1975, In Hindsight …
Dennis Geisler calls his rare rear-engine Funny Car Hindsight; after he backflips the flopper in a huge starting-line wheelstand, he might have had second thoughts on its design
1978, The Real Winter-nationals
Southern California is supposed to be home to sunshine and blue skies, but the 1978 event is besieged by foul weather, including a rare dusting of snow
1981, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The roof of Raymond Beadle’s famed Blue Max Funny Car blows off at the finish line on a winning semifinal run, but fellow Texan Kenny Bernstein allows Beadle to saw the roof off of his car and graft it to the Max. Beadle loses the final but not for lack of effort
1982, Seven Seconds to Glory
After years of using a complicated weight-break rule, NHRA switches Pro Stock to a straight-up 500-cubic-inch limit. The big horsepower gains lead to the class’ first seven-second pass, by the late Lee Shepherd
1984-85, Thar She Blows (again)!
Al Segrini wins dramatic back-to-back Funny Car titles. In 1984, he rides out a huge top-end blower explosion; the following year, he crosses the finish line with a cockpit full of sparks from a disintegrating clutch
1986, Too Slick for Its Own Good
Gary Ormsby unveils a super-swoopy streamliner, and the car’s debut is a bang ... in the worst way. An ignition short caused by the engine-cloaking body leads to a huge blower explosion in the water box on its first pass
1987, The America’s Cup, Quarter-Mile Style
While U.S. sailors battle the Australians in the America’s Cup, American Kenny Bernstein and Aussie Graeme Cowin wage their own war in Funny Car, complete with flags on their tow vehicles
1989, Up, Up, and Away
Eddie “the Thrill” Hill lives up to his nickname after a front-spoiler malfunction sends his yellow Top Fuel dragster soaring across the finish line
1990, Upset of the Decade
With the ink practically still wet on his nitro license, K.C. Spurlock wins Funny Car in his Pro debut, knocking off John Force, Bruce Larson, and, in the final, Ed “the Ace” McCulloch
1993, ‘The King’ Gets Crowned
Kenny Bernstein loses more than the Top Fuel final to Joe Amato. The former world champ loses, in succession, an engine, a tire, control of his race car, and the race car itself in a violent top-end tumble that leaves “the Bud King” dazed but unhurt
1997, Scelzi Sez … Winner
Gary Scelzi wins at his first event since taking the wheel of Alan Johnson’s dragster five months after the death of Alan’s brother, Blaine. He becomes the first driver since K.C. Spurlock in 1990 to win in his Pro debut
1998, ‘The Snake’s’ Double Strike
The two fuel cars owned by Don “the Snake” Prudhomme double up with wins by Larry Dixon and Ron Capps. Prudhomme hasn’t won as a driver or owner in Pomona since 1978
2001, Rookies Rule
Former Top Alcohol Dragster racer Darrell Russell joins Gary Scelzi and K.C. Spurlock as the only drivers to score in their Professional debuts by winning aboard Joe Amato’s Top Fuel dragster with rookie crew chief Jimmy Walsh
2006, That’s Really Showing ’em
Robert Hight’s Funny Car engine blows in round two, destroying the body. The team pulls the body off its show car and wins
2008, The Kid is All Right
Former Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Antron Brown shows that he is as adept on four wheels as on two when he qualifies No. 1 in his Top Fuel debut
Fans will be able to vote on NHRA.com; winner will be announced Feb. 14, 2010
