Friday Qualifying at Mayhem at the Creek
X-DRL Stars Thrill Crowd at Budds Creek for Opening Day of Mayhem at the Creek
Fans were given quite a show for the opening day at Mayhem at the Creek. Mother Nature smiled on the creek and gave mild weather with a high in the low 80's. All day, racers could be heard speculating on how fast the third round of qualifying might be under the lights.
"We are excited with this fantastic weather – combined with the altitude (sea level), we have a legitimate shot to run in the 50's," said Pro X-Treme points leader Brandon Pesz.
X-DRL Pro X-Treme record holder Frankie Taylor agreed and backed it up with a 3.61 pass right out of the box in the first round of qualifying. By the third round of qualifying, fans had 3.50's on their mind and they cheered when Terry Leggett "Legbone" posted a career best 3.610 at 206.26 mph.
"MIR is my favorite spot to race. It's close to home only five hours, and it's as good a place as I know to race. I lost in the finals here in pro stock in 2001, I'm hoping to make it again with a better outcome," said Leggett.
But there was more to come as the madman Frankie Taylor took center stage with a shot to break his X-DRL Pro X-Treme record in his final pass for the night. The crowd was rewarded with a 3.604 at 209.01 mph – Frankie didn't disappoint with a new record for the Maryland fans.
"The track is great, nice people and an awesome facility. This is my first time to MIR and I really appreciate Royce and his group stepping up to host this event," said the Madman, Frankie Taylor.
Not to be outdone, points leader Brandon Pesz burned up the track in the third round with a 3.609 at 208.78 mph to take the win for the X-Treme Gateway Showdown and the second qualifying position.
Switzer Dynamics Pro Nitrous driver Jim Laurita found himself in good position at the creek qualifying number two with a 3.866 at 193.21 at the track where he posted his first win as a top sportsman. He will have his hands full with number one qualifyer Danny Parry in his Chevy Camaro who took the top spot with a 3.847 at 197.25 mph.
X-Treme Pro Stock drivers watched the weather all day as the barometer rose and mild temperatures dropped throughout the evening. This class is chasing the 4.0 mark and thought they might have a chance when John DeFlorian ran a 4.066 early in the day. However, the humidity picked up later in the evening and the closest he got was 4.049 at 178.10 to take the number one qualifying spot.
Jim Bell brought his Ford Mustang to run in the Precision Turbo and Engine Pro Turbo class and posted a 4.155 at 184.45 for his best run of the day.
Legbone wasn't the only driver posting a career best as TJ Tindle took the top qualifying position in X-Treme Pro Mod running a 3.909 at 189.12. TJ is having a tremendous rookie season with one win in the series and solid runs all season long. Kevin Rivenbark, also a winner this season, took the number two position with a 3.970 at 168.03 mph.
Chris Powers took the top position in Top Dragster with a 4.068 at 173.81 mph. He will be competing for the $500 low qualifier award on Saturday so the final qualifying round should be exciting.
Wayne Woodard posted the fastest time of the day in Mickey Thompson Top Sportsman with a 4.179 at 174.21 mph but with $1,000 low qualifier money on the line, everyone in the class will bring their best for the final qualifying round on Saturday.
The 10.5 Outlaw class debuted at the Creek and thrilled the crowd with some wild runs and fast times. Mo Hail was the top qualifier for the day with a 4.162 at 180.45 mph.
Pro Junior Dragsters ran a competitive class but Logon Hubbell took the top spot for the day with a 7.904 at 82.63 mph. The class has several X-DRL event winners so he will have his hands full hanging on to the top spot and earning the Alert Screw low qualifier award.
Weather forecast is favorable for Saturday so we expect more fast and even record-breaking runs as we finish qualifying and run eliminations for Mayhem at the Creek. Final round of qualifying starts at 3:00 pm with eliminations scheduled to begin at 5:00.

NHRA NEWS: MELLO YELLO SERIES RESULTS FRIDAY FROM SONOMA RACEWAY
HAGAN, GRUBNIC, EDWARDS AND ARANA SR. LEAD QUALIFYING AT NHRA SONOMA NATIONALS
SONOMA, Calif. – Funny Car points leader Matt Hagan raced to the qualifying lead in dominating fashion Friday at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals.
David Grubnic (Top Fuel), Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Sr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders in their respective categories during the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at the scenic facility just north of San Francisco.
Hagan’s track record performance of 3.986 seconds at 320.51 mph in his Magneti Marelli/Rocky Boots Dodge Charger tied the second-quickest and sixth-fastest runs for a Funny Car in NHRA history and it capped an exciting and fast first day of qualifying where several track records were reset. Qualifying continues on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. Eliminations are scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m.
Sonoma Raceway became the fifth NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series track to showcase four-second Funny Car runs. Jack Beckman drove his Valvoline/MTS Dodge Charger to a performance of 3.994 at 319.67 to join Hagan in the three-second zone.
“The only word to describe it is awesome,” Hagan said. “Dickie [Venables, crew chief] went back and put a new [fuel] pump on it and said, ‘Hey, kid. Hold on.’ Dickie was swinging for the fence, and it stuck. I wish everyone could feel how it feels to go that fast. It’s one of the coolest things on earth. As soon as the clutch went 1:1, it put me back in the seat and just kept climbing.”
In Top Fuel, Grubnic powered his Optima Batteries dragster to the front of the order in Top Fuel with a track record time of 3.765 at 324.28. Native Australian Grubnic has yet to record a No. 1 position this season and has nine in his career.
“We’ve been No. 1 in the past, and it’s great to be No. 1 again,” Grubnic said. “It’s a great job by [owner/tuner] Connie Kalitta. I can’t thank him and the crew enough. For me to come here and represent Optima Batteries and longtime sponsor Red Line Oil at their home race is fantastic. I used that whole lane. We were getting every little bit of it that we could out there. I think it can hold up, but we’re not going to count our chickens before they hatch. It only takes a thousandth of a second to drop it.”
In Pro Stock, Edwards continued his qualifying mastery by powering his K&N Filters/I Am Second Chevy Camaro to the qualifying lead with a run of 6.526 at 212.23. Edwards, who has never won at Sonoma, has 10 No. 1 qualifying positions this season and 51 in his career.
“We made a lot better run the second time around,” Edwards said. “We had transmission problems there going into fourth gear and we need to look at that and see what’s going on. If not for that, I think I could have run a low 6.51. It does feel good to come here and run well. We’ve run good here before. We didn’t do so well in Denver, but that’s over and done with. Hopefully we can move on.”
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Arana Sr. was quickest on his Lucas Oil Products Buell with a run of 6.894 seconds at 190.86 mph. His two sons, Adam and Hector Jr., were second and third in the qualifying order.
“It’s cool,” Arana Sr. said. “This is something I wanted to see happen. Now we just need to stay calm and collected tomorrow and keep the same pace. We want to stay No. 1, 2, and 3 that’s my dream. Before we ran, I walked over to Adam and told him to stay calm and don’t let anything bother you. Then I kept seeing the numbers dropping and thought that I needed to listen to myself. When Adam ran that 6.90 I was tickled to death. I didn’t think I ran better because I had been struggling. I was happy to see a 6.89.”

Saturday Schedule Change for the X-DRL Mayhem at the Creek
Racefans - weather conditions are perfect to see some records set. Cars will be fast under the lights and conditions are right to set some records. In an effort to give the racers the best chance at a record, we are moving the start times back on Saturday to 3:00 for the final qualifying session and 5:00 to begin pre-eliminations to get to Mayhem Bad 8's.
Prime-time viewing of the fastest cars of the day begins at 6:30 with a pre-race ceremony to take us into the Quick 8 eliminations of all classes.
"We have been trying to get a pro stock car under 4 in the eighth for quite awhile and the barometer and temperatures are just what we need to maybe get it done this week-end. This track has a history of record-setting passes so no records are safe right now," said Cary Goforth, X-Treme Pro Stock driver and reigning ADRL world champion.

X-DRL Press Release: Interview with Pro X-treme Standout Drive Tim Tindle
Tim Tindle has run the gamut during his relatively short drag racing career, but the successful site contractor from Santa Rosa Beach, Florida has found a home in X-DRL Pro X-Treme, while his son, TJ, is turning heads as a rookie in X-Treme Pro Mod. We caught up with Tindle on his way to Maryland International Raceway for the inaugural X-DRL Mayhem at the Creek, where the veteran driver has a chance to take home two wins in one weekend.
X-DRL: How did you end up racing fast doorslammers?
Tindle: I've raced just about everything. I ran IHRA and NHRA in the late '90s, then ran some Top Dragster. We ran naturally-aspirated stuff, nitrous, blowers, a little bit of everything really. Then I started to get interested in the door car stuff. Back in the early 2000s I owned a 10.5 car that we ran mainly at ORSCA races and a few of the outlaw races around home. Joey Martin was the driver and I just owned the car. Again, we ran blowers, nitrous and turbos, just experimenting with the different combinations.

NHRA NEWS: EDWARDS DOMINATES PRO STOCK CATEGORY HEADING INTO NHRASONOMA NATIONALS
SONOMA, Calif. – The Pro Stock category is one of the hardest fought classes in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series with the difference between success and failure razor thin. The slightest adjustments to these factory hot rods can propel a racer to the top of the charts or have them putting the car on the trailer early in eliminations. Mike Edwards in his K&N Filters/I Am Second Chevy Camaro is on the right side of success so far in 2013 as the veteran driver pursues his second Pro Stock world championship.
Edwards leads the Pro Stock category by 79 points over defending world champion Allen Johnson on the strength of four wins this season. Edwards and crew chief Adam Hornberger are very methodical in their approach and don’t focus on their competition, but rather what elements they are presented with at each event.
“We are just trying to be consistent and race the race track,” Edwards said. “Make the right adjustments for the racetrack and the conditions that we’re racing in. That has been our main goal all year long, is try to be consistent. Make the car go up and down the track. If you can go up and down the track you have a chance to win and that is what we are trying to do.”

NHRA NEWS: FUNNY CAR DRIVER JOHNNY GRAY SEES RETURN TO NHRA SONOMANATIONALS AT SONOMA RACEWAY ANOTHER CHANCE TO BUILD CHAMPIONSHIPMOMENTUM
SONOMA, Calif. – With four wins in four final round appearances, it may seem as though Johnny Gray has figured out precisely what buttons to push in what has already been a marvelous 2013 season for the Funny Car standout.
But Gray knows how difficult it can be in a rigorous class and he’s been sure not to take any of the success for granted, no matter how many spectacular runs his 8,000-horsepower
Pitch Energy Dodge Charger continues to produce.
Gray, who is third in the Funny Car points standings, is ready for more eye-catching performances as he heads to Sonoma Raceway, July 26-28 for the NHRA Sonoma Nationals. Gray had it all figured out a year ago at the track and enters the second event of the three-race Western Swing as the defending champion.
Joining him as 2012 winners of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event are Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle). The race will be televised on ESPN HD (qualifying Saturday, 7 p.m. ET) and ESPN2 HD (eliminations, Sunday, 8 p.m. ET).
PX Standout Stott To Bring Gasser Exhibition For X-DRL Mayhem at the Creek at MIR
The new X-Treme Drag Racing League (X-DRL) is already bringing many of the world's quickest and fastest doorslammers to Maryland International Raceway for this week’s X-DRL Mayhem at the Creek (July 26-27).
Now, thanks to one of its standouts in Pro X-Treme (PX), the X-DRL’s fifth-ever event will have a touch of nostalgia to go with all of the 200-plus mph action. The X-DRL announced that PX standout and Pro Mod legend Quain Stott will be bringing two period-correct gassers to the event to make special exhibition passes during the two-day event, adding another special bonus for what will be a memorable X-DRL debut at historic Maryland International Raceway.
The two gassers will include Stott's '41 Willys “Executioner,” and a '48 Anglia named “White Trash” driven by Donovan Stott.
“This is really exciting for me and I have to thank the X-DRL and MIR for helping make it happen. We brought the gassers to the X-DRL event at Bristol Raceway and it went over well so I think the fans at Maryland are really going to love it,” said Stott, a Pro Mod world champion and multi-time event winner.
“I love MIR and, of course, the gassers raced at MIR back in the day. They were real big at this track and it will be kind of neat to repeat history. These cars were the stepping-stones to what we’re driving now.”
The cars in the X-DRL’s PX class at MIR, including Stott’s LeeBoy Corvette, will run in the 3.60s and at speed of more than 200 mph, but the gassers could be just as entertaining, running in the 5.90s in the eighth-mile at more than 120 mph.
They feature a four-speed stick shift, old-style suspension, mechanical fuel injection and every other stunning detail that makes them period correct. Their driving style also makes the gassers a favorite with the fans, and Stott thinks the MIR crowd will enjoy the nostalgic touch during the X-DRL weekend.
“It’s going to be exciting to race these in front of a big crowd. I think the fans will really like the 4-speeds in these cars. We’re all over the track, got the wheels in the air and these are just high-revvin’ and gear-jamming cars. It’s going to be a lot of fun for the fans,” Stott said. “It’s going to be cool.”
X-DRL Mayhem at the Creek kicks off with the first of three qualifying sessions at 3 p.m. on Friday. Saturday’s action starts with the final round of qualifying at 1:00 pm and eliminations to follow.
“We want to thank Quain for bringing these gassers to the Mayhem at the Creek,” X-DRL Account Executive Keith Goolsby said. “Royce Miller and the folks at MIR do such a fantastic job on promotions, we expect a great crowd and we really think it ensures an action-packed weekend for all race fans.”
It also ensures that Stott will have a busy two days. In addition to his gasser and PX driving duties, the noted tuner also calls the shots for rookie Pro Modified driver T.J. Tindle, which means Stott will have very little down time in Maryland.
But he likely wouldn’t have it any other way. “I watched these cars as a kid and I loved them, and they just give you an incredible thrill,” Quain said. “We want to take the older folks on a trip on memory lane and we want the younger fans to see the history of where we came from.”
