Quarter Mile Foundation receives donation from PWA
Parma Heights, Ohio – At the 2011 SEMA Show, the Performance Warehouse Association (PWA) surprised Quarter Mile Foundation Chairman Traci Hrudka with a generous contribution to the Foundation’s PROJECT 1320 effort to compile the history of drag racing and the performance aftermarket.
“I guess you could say I was more than pleasantly surprised when John Towle (PWA President) presented me with the Association’s generous contribution,” said Traci Hrudka, Foundation Chairman. “I was aware that there was discussion among the PWA Board regarding some degree of support, but what the association provided us with definitely will be put to good use in securing additional interviews of our pioneers.”
John Towle, the PWA’s long time President (who recalled his own memories and observations in an interview for the documentary at the Show), commented, “The PWA is very proud and pleased to support the Quarter Mile Foundation and the PROJECT 1320 documentary effort.
“The industry has been blessed with many ‘pioneers’ who have given their blood, sweat and tears to make this industry what it is today. They developed parts and equipment which has been the driving force behind every one of our companies. But, we have missed hearing their stories, and lost far many important ones!
“We at PWA feel strongly that the Quarter Mile Foundation’s PROJECT 1320 is the best way to capture our pioneers’ recollections in their own words.
“On a personal level, I would like to ask you to please reach into your pocket and send the Foundation your check. Here is some simple math: If you have worked in this industry for 5-1/2 years and you put 5 cents in a dish each day of that period, you would have over $100.00. So send your $100 or more today! PROJECT 1320 must continue to preserve the "voices" for all to hear and see.”

NORWALK, Ohio (November 18, 2011) – There is nothing more important than the mission.
That
is all you can really think about. Safely getting the cargo from point A
to point B, that is the task at hand. To do that you have to put out of
your mind all that is going on around you. Forget the war. Forget the
risks. This cargo HAS to make it to its destination.
The

of feet in the air on its way through hostile airspace. Moments before
takeoff the pilot takes a few deep breaths. What can possibly get him

PROJECT 1320 captures 20 more interviews at the SEMA Show
Increases total interviews completed to 86
Parma Heights, Ohio (NOVEMBER 17, 2011) –The Quarter Mile Foundation has announced it has added interviews of 20 performance industry and drag racing legends for the PROJECT 1320 documentary at the 2011 SEMA Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center, November 1 to 4.
Quarter Mile Foundation chairman, Traci Hrudka said, “Our intent at this year’s SEMA Show was to try to capture several of the important figures of the industry who have helped grow and guide it to where it is today. We were also hoping to get perspectives of some of the important individuals from the auto makers’ performance programs.
“The Specialty Equipment Market Association and CONVEXX (the SEMA Show Producer) really made this possible. Combined with an excellent, high traffic booth location and record Show attendance, the support shown by SEMA and CONVEXX created a wonderful and very productive week!
“I feel we were able to gather a very broad group of individuals from a fairly diverse background. We were fortunate to gain the interviews of two key veterans – Art Chrisman and Leo Kagan, both SEMA Hall of Fame members whose contributions helped shape the sport and the industry.”
PROJECT 1320 interviewer, Don Gillespie, commented, "The SEMA Show interviews provided the PROJECT 1320 documentary with some real insights into the interviewees and to the growth of the aftermarket, in particular. Because the focus was heavily favoring industry figures, I got a far better appreciation for how the industry grew and how its internal relationships expanded and matured with the passing years.
“As the number of interviews has grown, there is also a clearer picture emerging of the ‘cradle to cockpit’ influences that the formative years of these pioneers had. It seems every interview adds another layer of perspective and information to the legacy of the sport and the industry.”
With the completion of the SEMA Show filming, the Quarter Mile Foundation has now interviewed 86 individuals, encompassing 100-plus hours of material.
A list of the interviewees follows below.

The PMRA Top Five for 2011 - PMRA Champion Vito Montesano
"They all put in a lot of hard work and it paid off this year."
MAPLE, ONTARIO (November 17, 2011) For Vito Montesano, winning the 2011 Pro Modified Racing Association Marydel Homes Championship Point Award Series presented by Magnum Auto Parts, Patio Passport and Global Emissions Systems Inc. was a nail-biter right until the last race in the last event, but the Maple, Ontario-based driver held on to win his first PMRA championship.
"This has been a great year," said the driver of the 1969 Chevy Camaro Pro Modified. "We are very happy," he continued. "Not only did we win our first PMRA race, we also won the championship. We are just ecstatic."
In his second year of PMRA competition, Montesano stayed at the top of the points race throughout the six-race season, but it was close as second-place finisher Bruce Boland of Hamilton, Ontario, and third-place Eric Latino of Whitby, Ontario, whittled into Montesano's lead. When Boland won over Latino in the final of the last race at Cayuga, the points were tallied, and Montesano won over Boland 1534 points to 1533.
Qualifying for each race, Montesano put down some killer laps in qualifying number one for race two and race three, posting a meet low ET top speed of 5.889-second, 245.81-mph in race two, and a 5.909, 245.54 to start on the pole in race three.
The Cynergy Composites Camaro body sits on a G-Force Race Cars platform and is powered by a ERD (Engine Research & Development) 526-cubic inch Brad Anderson (BAE) Supercharged Hemi utilizing an ERD fuel system and a PSI supercharger. A Lenco three-speed and a Coan Racing torque converter is couple to the engine, and this combination set the record last season for the quickest quarter-mile converter car at 5.88-seconds.
"I have to thank crew chief Carl Spiering for his work and tuning the car," Montesano said. "I also want to thank Sal Vavala for all his work, as well as the help and support from the rest of my crew, Elisabeth DosSantos, Jon Daniel Montesano, Nino and Minnie.
"They all put in a lot of hard work and it paid off this year."
Montesano said he plans to return to PMRA competition in 2012.
"We have some things in the works for next year," he said, not getting into specifics yet.
"The PMRA has been a fantastic series. I'm glad I moved over to it a couple of years ago."

SHIELDS LEADS FINAL CHAMPIONS FOR NHRA LUCAS OIL SERIES
GLENDORA, Calif. – Duane Shields led the final list of racers for the 2011 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series World Champions capturing the Top Alcohol Dragster Championship on Sunday during final eliminations at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. The Boulder City, Nev., resident, came into the event leading the points but was being chased by Woodburn, Oregon’s Joey Severance needing to win the event to overtake Shields. Severance fell in round 2 as Shields sat in his dragster watching from the starting line as he waited to make his second round pass.
NHRA Summit National Champions Crowned
GLENDORA, Calif. – The NHRA Summit Racing Series crowned their four National Champions this past weekend at Auto Club Dragway at Pomona during the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. Brandon Schmall and Mark Horton led the winners as Schmall, Lino Lakes, Minn., took home the trophy and the championship in the Pro class. Schmall drove his ’70 Challenger to a 9.918 second lap in the final to defeat Paul Comeau, Vancouver, Wash., and his ’39 Chevy. A starting line advantage of 6-hundredths of a second proved to be the difference as Schmall left first and never looked back.
Horton, a Callahan, Fla., resident, worked through three rounds of eliminations in Super Pro and faced off with Steven Shearer, Exeter, Calif., in the final round. Shearer left early with a red-light foul start handing the win to Horton who went on to a near perfect run of 8.107 seconds on an 8.10 dial-in and a reaction time of 0.006 seconds for a combined package of 0.013. Horton’s dragster that runs on E85 Ethanol fuel ran consistent all day with runs of 8.093 (8.09 dial) and 8.102 (8.09 dial) in rounds one and two.
