LOCAL RACERS MARSHALL, BROWN TAKE JEGS SPORTSNATIONALS TITLES
HEBRON, Ohio – Local racers Craig Marshall and Jeff Brown led all winners today for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals event at National Trail Raceway. Marshall, Columbus, Ohio, drove his ’98 Grand Am to the win in Super Stock with a lap of 8.943 seconds at 138.97 mph against Jeremy Duncan, Charleston, Ind.
Brown, Marysville, Ohio, went 6.782 seconds at 190.24 mph for the Spitzer Top Dragster trophy in outrunning Jamie Bridge, Napanee, Ont., Can., Brown nearly shared the winner’s circle with his daughter Logan who advanced to the semifinals in the Jr. Dragster class.
The Comp final went to Charlie Greco of Paoli, Pa., in his ’10 Cobalt and Dave Connolly, Elyria, Ohio, took the win in Super Gas. Greco ran down David Billingsley with a run of 8.871 seconds at 137.39 mph. Connolly, who splits time between the Lucas Oil Series and the NHRA Full Throttle national series won on a double breakout in his ’63 Corvette. Connolly’s dad Ray won the Super Gas class at last year’s event.
Steve Hoyt pulled off a double this weekend winning the Super Eliminator Shootout presented by Mosier Engineering in Super Gas on Saturday, then took his 2002 Super Comp dragster to the winner’s circle on Sunday. The Fort Wayne, Ind., racer took the early lead on a holeshot forcing final round opponent Dave Dahlem to break out.
Ryan Ondrejko grabbed his second national event win of the year in Top Sportsman while 63-year old Super Street winner Ron Steiner picked up his first win of his career. RICHARDSON AND BREWER TAKE OUT POINTS LEADERS IN FINALS
(Commerce, GA – September 25) Racers lined up early for the first of two events today (several events were rained out earlier in the season, so Atlanta Dragway officials scheduled a second event to allow competitors to earn more championship points), ready to defend their points standings and end their season with a bang. Winners of the Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and Motorcycle classes were given a chance to compete in the NHRA King of the Track event after the second race was finished. Points leaders didn't allow the standings to shift too much, maintaining the top ranks with fierce focus.
Doug Richardson (Ballground, GA) raced through the ranks to the Super Pro final in his '02 Dragster, against John Hobbs ('71 Vega—Conyers, GA), focused on defending his points lead. Richardson dialed in at 5.13, giving Hobbs the handicap tree with a 6.52 dial-in. Hobbs left the line with a .042 green light, before Richardson launched with an advantageous .008 light. Richardson caught up with Hobbs, and took out the points leader in 5.14 seconds at 126.42 mph; Hobbs crossed in 6.53 seconds at 105.86 mph. "The car was horrible," Richardson said, "but the good Lord—he was driving the car, not me—and my family made it good today." Richardson was "very thankful for everything." Mark Milford (Canon, GA) placed third in his '71 Vega.
Chad Brewer (Canton, GA), second in Pro points, took his yellow '67 Camaro to the Pro finals to face off with points leader Bruce Wilson (Tallapoosa, GA), in a blue '70 Nova. Brewer, dialed in at 7.27, left the line first with a .017 green light. Wilson, dialed in at 6.94, cut a .035 light, holding fast to the pedal to catch Brewer at the top end. Brewer broke out with a 7.26 run at 94.24 mph, but Wilson broke out worse in 6.92 seconds at 98.89, giving Brewer a .015 margin of victory. "It was luck," Brewer said, "we're good friends, so it's all good." Brewer thanked "the mayor of Hickory Flat" for the win. Pete Wagner (Jefferson, GA – '71 Demon) finished third.
The Sportsman class was overtaken by Scott Reynolds (Cartersville, GA), who lined up his '90 Firebird in the finals against Nick Wagner (Jefferson, GA) in an '04 SRT-4. Wagner, dialed in at 8.25, waited for Reynolds, dialed at 9.03, to leave the line first with a .064 light. Wagner followed with an .054 light, but couldn't catch Reynolds at the top end. Reynolds crossed the win stripe first in 9.04 seconds at 74.73 mph, before Wagner finished in 8.29 seconds at 83.37 mph, giving Reynolds a .018 margin of victory. Reynolds "had a great time today," but kept focused on competing in the night's second event. Points leader Mel Abney ('68 Camaro—Cumming, GA) was the Sportsman semi-finalist.
Jimmy "Cha Cha" Heisler ('00 Kawasaki—Woodstock, GA) entered his fourth Motorcycle final in a row, having won across the East Coast on previous weekends. Heisler, with a 6.77 prediction, lined up against Steve Winn ('92 Suzuki—Athens, GA), who dialed in at 6.35 seconds. Heisler cut a .083 light while Winn followed with a .111 green light; Heisler kept ahead until the finish, gaining a .066 margin of victory in 6.79 seconds at 99.14 mph before Winn crossed in 6.41 seconds at 106.65 mph. Heisler and his wife Eeman thanked Jeff Sutton, Motul, Vanson Leathers, and Mattei Cycle Supply for their successes. Heisler said, "the luck's just been swinging my way." Paul Lee ('00 Hayabusa—Mt. Airy, GA) finished in the Motorcycle semi-finals.
Shelby Nelson (12—Fort Payne, AL) lined up against points leader Madison Lee (12—Campobello, SC) for the 8-12 Junior Dragster final. Nelson predicted an 8.97 run against Lee's 8.90 dial-in, and left the line with a .140 green light; an energized Lee jumped the tree and made a -.010 foul, giving Nelson the win. Nelson held it down for an 8.95 second run at 71.92 mph, while Lee finished in 8.92 seconds at 73.24 mph. Tied in first for points, Austin Carden (11—McDonough, GA) went out in the semi-finals, along with Wesley Syme (10—Atlanta, GA). Lee (dialed in at 8.90) and Carden (predicting an 8.94 elapsed time) ran off for the championship title—Carden won the tree with a .035 reaction that outdid Lee's .105 green light. Lee ran closer to the dial in 8.94 seconds at 72.90 mph, but her slow reaction made Carden's 9.04 second run at 70.70 mph the winning package; Carden grasped the championship with a slim .006 margin of victory.
Cole Sheriff (14—Lula, GA) ran next to Taylor Ramsey (17—Commerce, GA) in the 13-17 Junior Dragster final. Ramsey predicted 7.90 run while Sheriff dialed closely with a 7.93 prediction. Sheriff kicked off the final with a .057 green light, as Ramsey cut it short with a -.029 red light. Sheriff basked in his win lights for 7.86 seconds at 82.76 mph, while Ramsey finished in 7.82 seconds at 83.26 mph. 2010 was Sheriff's first season, and he capped it off with his first win ever: "I thank my parents and the Lord." Sheriff, whose racing career was started by his parents coming to watch the Year One Friday night action at Atlanta Dragway, finished sixth in points. Kelsey Lynn (16—Marietta, GA) finished in the semi-final round.

Goforth, Owens' Double-Win Weekend Highlights Ohio Drags' Six Winners
NORWALK, OH (September 25, 2010) — Two of the top competitors in the American Drag Racing League (ADRL) showed exactly why they reign atop their respective classes at Saturday's Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags IV.
Extreme Pro Stock driver Cary Goforth and Pro Extreme Motorcycle rider Ashley Owens both won for the second time in two nights to stay No. 1 in their divisions, capping off a memorable double-race weekend at Summit Motorsports Park.
"To get two wins is just really, really awesome," said Goforth, who won Dragstock VII on Friday. "Awesome won't even cover it. This is just wonderful. You always dream about something like this, but you don't always get it."
Two other drivers got a chance to celebrate for the first time in the ADRL, as Mick Snyder (Pro Extreme) and Jim Laurita (Pro Nitrous) both picked up their first career ADRL wins on Saturday.
Chuck Ulsch picked up his third win of the 2010 season in Extreme 10.5 and Morgan Benfield got the win in Pro Junior Dragster.
In every respect, the Ohio Drags IV was a memorable event, in part because of Goforth and Owens' continued dominance.
Owens won for an unprecedented eighth time this season and also became the first ADRL competitor in its history to win five straight races.
"You never take any of these for granted," Owens said. "There's so much that can happy, you just have to enjoy it."
In getting his second double-win weekend this year, Owens handed more heartache to Terry Schweigert. Owens went 4.03 in the finals, going a PXM-best 178.28 miles per hour to beat Schweigert in the finals for the fourth time in 2010.
Owens and his Fast by Gast team also had to overcome replacing the motor after the second-round run. It didn't seem to bother him, as Owens went 4.09 in a semifinal victory.
"I just can't say enough about our team," Owens said. "They scrambled to put that back-up motor in and just did an amazing job, every one of the them. I had total confidence in them that they were going to get everything done."
Goforth was on point all weekend in XPS, reclaiming the points lead after winning Dragstock on Friday. He followed it up by going 4.11 to beat John Montecalvo in Saturday's final.
Goforth went as quick as 4.05 and was consistently impressive for the second straight day in picking up his third win this season.
"I've got a good crew and that's the truth," Goforth said. "We had a consistent car, but it was also consistently faster and quicker than anybody out there this weekend."
Snyder gave the capacity crowd at Summit Motorsports Park a thrilling show in the PX final, as he nearly crossed the center line before blowing a header in an electrifying run against Alex Hossler.
Snyder went 3.95, but couldn't celebrate his first ADRL win until replays showed he didn't move into the right lane.
"I wasn't sure if I crossed or not. I knew I was close and I was waiting for someone to let me know," Snyder said. "If you're going to win, you might as well do it in spectacular fashion."
Snyder went 3.66 in the first round and then had back-to-back 3.68s to reach the finals – including a victory against points leader Joshua Hernandez – ending his rookie season in PX in thrilling fashion.
"How can you do it any better than this?" Snyder said. "It's pretty amazing and just caps the year. We've been having a lot of fun, but we weren't winning. This win saves the year, really."
The win made Laurita's year, which, like Snyder, is also his first in the ADRL.
On a day filled with upsets and the unbelievable – points leader Rickie Smith was one of many top drivers who did not qualify for eliminations – Laurita hung around and went 3.94 to beat Terry Housley in the finals.
"This is overwhelming," Laurita said. "The Lord just blessed me here today. There was a lot of luck, but I'm just ecstatic. I've had a lot of friends help me the last few years and they've really stuck with me."
Laurita did his part as well, going 4.00 in the second round to beat close friend John Decerbo and adding another 4.00 in a semifinal win against Robert Mathis, who upset No. 1 qualifier Pat Stoken in the first round.
That was simply par for the course on a wild day in Pro Nitrous, where the top eight in points changed multiple times throughout the day.
"It was just perseverance," Laurita said. "We shook on every pass, but we were able to get through it."
Ulsch got a red-light win against Dan Millen in the Extreme 10.5 final, but he wasn't about to turn it down after his team worked vigorously to repair his car after the semifinals.
"Everybody was down there. There was probably about 20 people thrashing on the car," Ulsch said. "But you gotta get up (to the starting line) to win it. I'm just pumped."
He had every right to be after Millen couldn't finish off his previously amazing day.
Millen set a new world E.T. record with a 3.78 and consistently ran in the low 3.80s during eliminations.
It was enough to get him into the top eight in the points standings in XTF, but Ulsch was the one with the Minuteman trophy afterwards.
"We were off here and Dan is the cream of the crop," Ulsch said. "You couldn't mess with it. But we've got (3.80s) in us and now we have a month to find it."
Morgan Benfield became the first Pro Junior Dragster driver in ADRL history to win three races, as she picked up her third this year by going 8.00 in a red-light victory.
Benfield also moved into the top spot in the PJD points race.
The ADRL closes out the 2010 season with the LenMar Motorsports ADRL World Finals VI, which feature the famous Speedtech "Battle For The Belts." The top eight in each class qualify for a chance at a world title.
The event takes place on Oct. 22-23 at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, TX.

MONROE WINS JEGS SHOWDOWN IN TOP DRAGSTER
HEBRON, Ohio (September 25, 2010) – James Monroe lead all winners on day two of the NHRA JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals that was filled with final qualifying and time trails along with an afternoon filled with specialty races.
Monroe took the win and the trophy for the Top Dragster JEGS Shootout with a final round win over Rick Forish. The racer from Bloomington, Ind., went 6.829 seconds at 184.65 mph. The win was Monroe’s second JEGS Shootout as he won the event back in 2008.
In a crazy Mopar Hemi Challenge, it was Jim Daniels, Bristol, Pa., who was declared the winner when Jim Pancake was disqualified with a technical infraction during post race inspection. No. 1 qualifier Charlie Westcott lost in round one to Larry Perkins who then lost to Pancake, Delaware, Ohio, in round two. On the opposite side of the ladder, Daniels beat Stephen Hebert in round one, Charlie Westcott Sr. in round two, and Gary Wolkwitz in the semifinals. Daniels broke his motor and did not run the final but will get the win after all. Daniels ran 8.52’s throughout eliminations.
The Super Eliminator Shootouts presented by Moser Engineering saw London, Ohio, racer Pat Martin beat Mary Ann Jackson, Mansfield, Ohio, on a holeshot in Super Comp and Steve Hoyt, Fort Wayne, Ind., win over Doug Kroft, Wabash, Ind., in Super Gas with Kroft breaking out on the 9.90 second index. Georgetown, Ky., resident Dan Carter took the trophy in Super Street in his ’68 Camaro against Damien Hazelton when the Ottawa, Ohio, racer left early with a foul start.
A pair of Ohio racers qualified on top in the Spitzer Top Dragster and the Top Sportsman classes. Chuck Maruniak, Aurora, Ohio, clocked in at 6.227 seconds at 216.48 mph for the No. 1 spot in Top Dragster and Michael Jones, Montville, Ohio, put his ’96 Beretta on top in Top Sportsman with a lap of 6.759, 205.32.
Also qualifying No. 1 were Dave Yediny, Nazareth, Pa., in Comp; Mark Nowicki, Gaylor, Mich., in Super Stock; and Carey Bales, Lebanon, Ind., in Stock with his ’90 Challenger.

ADRL Crowns Six Winner for Dragstock VII on Friday
Tutterow Family Claims Two of Six Wins at ADRL Simpson Dragstock VII
NORWALK, OH (September 24, 2010) — Just moments after watching his son, Ty, win in Pro Junior Dragster at the completion of the American Drag Racing League (ADRL) Simpson Dragstock VII on Friday, Todd Tutterow had only one thought before his Pro Extreme final.
I just knew I needed to do my job," said Tutterow, the 2009 World Champion.
Tutterow followed suit, beating Joshua Hernandez with a 3.85 in the Pro Extreme final at Summit Motorsports Park to give the Tutterow family two memorable wins in one night.
"This is wonderful," Tutterow said. "It is very special when you got your family with you for something like this."
Other winners at Dragstock VII, which was completed on Friday after rain postponed the event two weeks ago in Rockingham, included Doug Riesterer (Pro Nitrous), Spiro Pappas (Extreme 10.5), Ashley Owens (Pro Extreme Motorcycle), Cary Goforth (Extreme Pro Stock) and Ty Tutterow (Pro Junior Dragster).
The fantastic day of racing served as an ideal prelude to the finish of Saturday's Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags IV, which will be the last chance for drivers to qualify for a top eight spot at next month's LenMar Motorsports ADRL World Finals VI.
Tutterow might have punched his ticket after starting the day eighth in points in PX.
But he put forth a yeoman's effort on Friday, beating No. 1 qualifier Frankie Taylor, teammate KH Al-Thani and points leader Hernandez in consecutive rounds to earn the win.
Taylor went 3.67 in their second-round matchup, but Tutterow cut a .005 light and went 3.73 to earn the holeshot win that spearheaded his title run.
"I knew I had to get Frankie at the line," Tutterow said. "We made some good runs and had some lucky runs. The main thing was just getting down the track."
Riesterer knocked off his own share of big names in Pro Nitrous and went 4.09 to beat Stan Allen in the finals.
"We came out here hoping to go a few rounds and have a chance to get into the 'Battle For The Belts,'" Riesterer said. "I never expected this in a million years. When I won, it didn't even hit me that I won Dragstock. It's a dream to win this race."
Riesterer beat No. 1 qualifier Shannon Jenkins in the second round and 2009 World Champion Khalid Al-Balooshi in the semifinals, moving to 10th in the points with Saturday's race remaining.
"We made some good calls and we did way more than I could have hoped for," Riesterer said. "We just need to keep winning."
Pappas was just glad to get back to his winning ways for the first time in 2010.
The 2009 Extreme 10.5 World Champion had his share of difficulty through a trying summer, but he proved he's back in the mix by going 4.15 to beat surprise finalist Brad Brand in the title round.
"We are finally on the right track," Pappas said. "We did some testing and we're back where we need to be."
Pappas earned his second career win and denied Brand his first ADRL win even though Pappas pulled back on the power during the finals.
"We really backed off on the engine and it paid off for us," Pappas said.
Brand had a major upset in the semifinals, getting a holeshot win against Billy Glidden, who went a career-best 3.96 during the run.
Owens continued to be bulletproof in Pro Extreme Motorcycle, beating Kim Morrell for the second straight race, this time by going 4.05 to once again deny Morrell her first ADRL win.
"The bike felt good and everything felt smooth out there," Owens said. "I thought it might go a little faster, but it was a good smooth day."
The win is Owens' seventh in eight races during 2010 and it is also his fourth straight victory. Should he win on Saturday, he would become the first ADRL driver to win five straight races.
But Owens, who also backed up his world E.T. record of 4.02 on Friday, is more concerned with reaching another mark.
"I would love to get that 3.99 out of the way," Owens said. "We're so close and I think if we have good track conditions, we have a chance."
Goforth re-took the points lead in Extreme Pro Stock, beating Cale Aronson on a holeshot in the finals. Aronson went 4.09 in his second straight finals appearance, but Goforth went .009 off the line and finished with a 4.10 for his second win this season.
"In my mind, I should have 2-3 more wins this year," Goforth said. "In St. Louis, I was late off the line against Brian (Gahm) and I really steamed about that. I really made an effort to drive like I can."
Goforth was consistent all day and that was key in avoiding the upsets that knocked John Montecalvo and Brian Gahm out in the second round. As a result, Goforth moved past both drivers in the points standings.
"We had three 4.11s in a row and that's just a tribute to our team. The car fell out of the trailer running fast," Goforth said. "We had the car to beat all night."
Ty Tutterow went 8.03 to earn a red-light win against Trevor Wilson in Pro Junior Dragster.
Owens is the lone winner from Friday who is also the top qualifier in his class for the Ohio Drags. The rest of the top qualifiers through three rounds include Alex Hossler (3.67, Pro Extreme), Pat Stoken (3.86, Pro Nitrous), Dan Millen (3.89, Extreme 10.5), Jeff Dobbins (4.10, Extreme Pro Stock) and K.J. Nowling (Pro Junior Dragster).
The fourth and final qualifying round for the Ohio Drags takes place at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The first round of eliminations is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

HEBRON, Ohio (September 24, 2010) – Day one of the JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals is in the books with early rounds of qualifying and time trials taking place today at National Trail Raceway. The track also hosted a career day in conjunction with the Columbus State Community College with a day at the races for more than 1000 high school students who were introduced to various careers in motorsports.
Racing kicked off this morning and ran into the afternoon before rain showers moved in and put a halt to the day’s action after several attempts to dry the track.
Prior to the rain, John Coughlin, Delaware, Ohio, grabbed the No. 1 spot in Top Dragster with a lap of 6.655 seconds at 205.94 mph. Coughlin and his JEGS Mail Order dragster is followed by Anthony Bertozzi, Ashland, Va., at 6.733, 193.49.
Charlie Westcott sits on top for Saturday’s Mopar Hemi Challenge with an 8.545 second pass in his ’68 Barracuda followed by Jim Daniels ’68 Dart at 8.586 and David Barton at 8.587. The Hemi cars will receive one final qualifying pass on Saturday morning that will set the field, followed by eliminations.

Schedule Change For Saturday’s ADRL Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags IV
NORWALK, OH (September 24, 2010) — The American Drag Racing League (ADRL) has announced a scheduling change for Saturday's Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags IV at Summit Motorsports Park.
The fourth and final qualifying session on Saturday will now begin at 9 a.m. with final eliminations set to start at 1 p.m. The MAVTV Winner's Circle celebration is now slated for 8:15 p.m.
The ADRL Top End Ministries Chapel Service will now take place at 8 a.m. and the spectator gates will still open at 9 a.m.
The schedule change for Saturday's Ohio Drags IV is to ensure the event will be completed in time before cold weather moves into the Northeast Ohio area. Saturday's low temperatures are predicted to dip into the mid-40s.
"Driver safety is our primary concern along with giving fans the best experience possible," ADRL Executive Vice President of Competition Bert Corzine said. "Making this change allows for both to happen."
Corzine moved up the starting time and made the schedule change after extensive discussion with ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling, and Summit Motorsports Park President Bill Bader III.
The Ohio Drags IV is the final ADRL race before next month's LenMar Motorsports ADRL World Finals VI, meaning it is imperative that the Ohio Drags IV are completed by the end of the weekend.
The earlier starting time will allow that to happen before colder temperatures arrive.
"With the cooler temperatures on Saturday, the good news for the fans is we should see world record times in every class," Nowling said. "We just don't want the track temperatures to get too cool, so moving everything to an earlier start is the responsible thing to do."
SCHEDULE FOR SATURDAY'S OHIO DRAGS IV (all times local)
SATURDAY: ADRL Top End Ministries Chapel Services 8 a.m.; Spectator Gates Open at 9 a.m.; Qualifying Round 4 at 9 a.m. (Run order: XPS, PXM, XTF, PN, PX, PJD); Pre-Race Ceremonies 12:30 p.m. Eliminations Round 1 at 1 p.m. (Run order: XPS, PXM, XTF, PN, PX, PJD) Jet Car and Monster Truck run 6 p.m. ADRL Winner's Circle Party 8:15 p.m. Secure Event 9 p.m.
The fourth and final qualifying session on Saturday will now begin at 9 a.m. with final eliminations set to start at 1 p.m. The MAVTV Winner's Circle celebration is now slated for 8:15 p.m.
The ADRL Top End Ministries Chapel Service will now take place at 8 a.m. and the spectator gates will still open at 9 a.m.
The schedule change for Saturday's Ohio Drags IV is to ensure the event will be completed in time before cold weather moves into the Northeast Ohio area. Saturday's low temperatures are predicted to dip into the mid-40s.
"Driver safety is our primary concern along with giving fans the best experience possible," ADRL Executive Vice President of Competition Bert Corzine said. "Making this change allows for both to happen."
Corzine moved up the starting time and made the schedule change after extensive discussion with ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling, and Summit Motorsports Park President Bill Bader III.
