NHRA ANNOUNCES FULL THROTTLE DRAG RACING SERIES 2011 SCHEDULE
Phoenix Event Moved to the fall; Mac Tools U.S. Nationals Last Race before NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship
GLENDORA, Calif. (Aug. 26, 2010) - NHRA announced its 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule today, featuring 22 national events. The most significant change to the schedule is the move of the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Firebird International Raceway to the fall where it will become one of the six-races that comprise the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship. The Phoenix event, which also will feature the Pro Stock Motorcycle class for the first time, will be held Oct. 14-16.
NHRA also announced that New England Dragway will join the NHRA member track network in 2011. NHRA is currently working with the track on facility improvements with the goal to bring an NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event to New England Dragway as soon as possible. Given the location of the facility, and NHRA's well known desire to bring a national event to New England and near the metropolitan Boston market, it promises to be one of the most popular spots on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series tour.
NHRA will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2011, with a number of special events and activities planned throughout the season at all NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events. Plans for the celebration, which will be announced in greater detail in the coming weeks, will include showcasing many of the sport's greatest moments from the last seven decades.

Another change to the schedule sees The United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Chicago moving to July 7-10. In 2011, the start of the Western Swing will begin with the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Denver, July 22-24, followed by the 24th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals, July 29-31 in Sonoma, Calif., and conclude with the NHRA Northwest Nationals in Seattle, Aug. 5-7.

The nearly week-long event will take place Aug. 31-Sept. 5 at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.

Super Chevy Show to Experience Mayhem at Bristol
BRISTOL, Tenn (Aug. 26) -- Fans of the Bowtie Brigade unite during the 30th Annual Super Chevy Show at Bristol Dragway, September 24-26. For 30 years, the Super Chevy Show has been known for some of the most exciting bracket and exhibition racing in the country and this year is no different.
This season, the show gets even hotter as Fas Mart Thunder Valley Mayhem presented by JanPak moves from its traditional May date to Saturday night, September 25.
Super Chevy Show’s extreme exhibition machines return to take part in Thunder Valley Mayhem on Saturday night. Ten Nitro Extreme Pro Mods, which also will make passes on Sunday, will square off in one of the wildest shows on four wheels.
During Saturday’s Thunder Valley Mayhem, fans not only will see the Pro Mods, they will be treated to lightning-fast passes by the Chattanooga Choo-Choo and Cannonball Express “jet trains.” Crowd-favorite Tranasaurus will show up to tear trashed cars to shreds, while Benny the Bomb returns to show fans he isn’t afraid to go head-to-head with pure dynamite.
Throw in action from the Team FMX Freestyle motorcycles on Saturday night and a spectacular fireworks show, and Fas Mart Thunder Valley Mayhem is the perfect addition to the 30th Annual Super Chevy Show.
Thunder Valley Mayhem exhibition runs will take place at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, while the Pro Mods will run again on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Those in attendance will have plenty of activities to keep them busy all weekend. Bracket racers will flock to Thunder Valley to take part in exciting racing action in Bracket 1 (Super Pro), Bracket 2 (Pro), DOT and True Street. The True Street cruise will take place at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Fans also will get to see a spectacular selection of some of the region’s best classic and modern Chevys. Chevy die-hards will be impressed with the attention to detail given to these show machines. The Super Chevy car show is one of the biggest and best Chevy car shows around. Bowtie fans will not want to miss it.
The National Corvette Museum will be on site, along with several other vendors. Officials with Super Chevy Show will judge the car show and present awards at 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. A car show judging seminar will take place Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Anyone interested in locating new products for their restoration project will want to visit the Performance & Restoration Marketplace. If that hard-to-find used part is nowhere to be found, the car corral and used parts swap meet is definitely the place to go.

DALE ARMSTRONG INDUCTED INTO MOTORSPORTS HALL OF FAME OF AMERICA CLASS OF 2010
DETROIT (Aug. 25, 2010) - Legendary NHRA crew chief and mechanical wizard Dale Armstrong was one of seven icons from the world of motorsports inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America Wednesday evening during the organization's annual induction ceremony at the Fillmore Theatre.
Long recognized as one of the sport's greatest innovators, Armstrong was the first Funny Car crew chief to use wind-tunnel testing and data recorders. He also is credited with the development of the lockup-style clutch, dual-source fuel-delivery system, and dynamometer testing for nitromethane-burning racing engines.
As crew chief for Kenny Bernstein, Armstrong earned five NHRA world championship titles, including four in Funny Car and one in Top Fuel, and helped the team make history by posting the first 300 mph speed in NHRA history. Following his record-breaking run with Bernstein, Armstrong continued his successful career tuning Don "The Snake" Prudhomme's Top Fuel dragster.
Armstrong, who also had an outstanding career as a driver with 12 NHRA national event victories including the prestigious U.S. Nationals, was inducted alongside famed daredevil Joie Chitwood, NASCAR champ Alan Kulwicki, AMA SuperCross champion Jeremy McGrath, television announcer Ken Squier, Trans Am champion Jerry Titus and USAC champ Rich Vogler.
Marty Reid, former NHRA television announcer and current lead for ESPN's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series telecasts as well as the Indy 500, presented Armstrong for induction.

New format, new excitement highlights Nitro Jam’s return to Maryland this weekend
MECHANICSVILLE, Md. (August 24, 2010) – At the end of the 2009 season the IHRA Nitro Jam series moved forward with a new format designed to increase the entertainment value of its show and generate new excitement in the series through the use of new classes, a new format and a new entertainment-first approach.
Now, after eight months of sold out shows and incredible competition, the all-new Nitro Jam series is making its debut at one of the oldest venues on the schedule as Maryland International Raceway prepares to host one of the biggest events in its 43-year history, the Maryland Nitro Jam August 28-29 in southern Maryland.
Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car is one of two new classes coming to Maryland International Raceway later this month
Featuring three nitro classes composed of Top Fuel and Pro Fuel Dragsters, the all-new Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car class and dozens of extras, the Maryland Nitro Jam will be one of the biggest nitro races on the east coast as the legendary track prepares for record runs and an exciting weekend of drag racing entertainment.
“We are very excited to show our fans the thrilling new Nitro Jam format, especially the new Prostalgia Nitro Funny Cars and the side-by-side jet trucks,” said MIR track owner Royce Miller. “We are also looking forward to seeing all the IHRA sportsman racers that put on a great show every year. This is truly going to be a memorable event.”
For the 11th consecutive year Nitro Jam’s best will compete on the Maryland quarter-mile for a chance to take home a coveted Ironman trophy, but this season will mark the first under the new format. Featuring two new classes, a new Chicago-style format, more fan activities and a new schedule, the Maryland Nitro Jam will still include the same incredible competition that has been a part of this race for the past decade, but in a new fan-friendly format.
The world’s quickest and fastest machines return to MIR at the Maryland Nitro Jam
Instead of qualifying the professional show will dive straight into eliminations with drivers making two passes each day with continuous racing throughout the show. From the first Top Fuel pass of the evening to the big finale, all of the classes will run twice with a new winner crowned each night. The new look will allow fans to see a complete race during each day of competition.
Following the completion of round one the two quickest winners will move on to the final in each class, preceded by a second pass by the rest of the field. The event will close out with a huge fireworks display and dozens of extras including the debut of side-by-side jet trucks as the Shockwave jet semi takes on the Super Shockwave ’57 Chevy in a battle of 60,000 horsepower machines, the “Cool Bus” wheelstanding school bus, the Harland Sharp Top Sportsman and Top Dragster Elite 8 shootout, FanFest, two full days of sportsman action, a huge fireworks display and more.
When all is said and done two winners will walk away with Nitro Jam hardware from each professional class and points and payout will be awarded accordingly.

In addition to the familiar Top Fuel field, the Maryland Nitro Jam will also feature the debut of the Pro Fuel and Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car classes. Pro Fuel Dragsters are similar to Top Fuel, but with 100-percent nitro in the tank making for incredible nitro racing with a different feel and sound.
Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car, the most popular new addition on the tour, showcases vintage funny car bodies with wild paint schemes and colorful designs wrapped around a Nitro Funny Car frame. In addition to the typical nitro funny car feel and smell, these funny cars truly put on a show with halftrack burnouts, dry hops and out-of-control racing that has made this one of the most popular classes in the country.
The two new classes will join the 320 mile-per-hour “Kings of the Sport” as Top Fuel Dragsters retain their spot as the headlining attraction at each and every Nitro Jam event.
Through the first seven races of 2009 the Top Fuel field features one of the tightest battles in history as ’07 champion Bruce Litton and Bobby Lagana have traded the top spot back-and-fourth nearly half-a-dozen times already. Both drivers will be hungry to establish a firm championship lead entering the event at MIR.
The 100-percent nitro Pro Fuel class will compete alongside Top Fuel
Defending race winner Del Cox Jr. will also be among the favorites to win the Maryland Nitro Jam as he joins team owner Mitch King to round out the Top Fuel field.
The Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car class also features an exciting championship battle as Steve Nichols and his “Mill Road Boys” team tries to hold off the hard charging Peter Gallen in the “Poverty Stricken” Vega.
Other top contenders in the Prostalgia field include Greg Jacobsmeyer in the “All-Star” Dodge, Mike “McAttack” McIntire, John Dunn and the “Dunn and Gone” team, Aaron “Army” Armstrong, John Lawson in the “Bullet Bob” machine and Rick Krafft’s “Chicago Fire.”
Rounding out the pro ranks is the new Pro Fuel Dragster class as Jeff Hamelink in the “Stealth” dragster takes a narrow lead into Maryland. He is being chased by Bill Evans in the “Black Pearl” and Mike Manners in the “Shredder” dragster. Robin Samsel is also among the group contending for the inaugural Pro Fuel title.

Despite the vastly different pro show the sportsman action will remain the same with qualifying on Saturday and eliminations on Sunday. In addition to the regular sportsman racing the Maryland Nitro Jam will also feature the Harland Sharp Elite 8 Shootout as part of its pro show as the top qualifiers from the Top Sportsman and Top Dragster fields compete in an eight-car heads-up shootout Sunday afternoon.
Another exciting new feature for 2010 is Fanfest. Prior to the start of the professional show racing will cease on the track and fans will be invited to the pits to interact with the Nitro Jam experience like never before. Everything at Fanfest is geared towards giving fans a chance to actually be a part of the show.
Fanfest will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and at noon on Sunday. Fans will have an hour or more to explore the pits. Along with meeting the drivers and crews, several stations will be set up in the pit area for fans to interact with the event. Included in the list of fan activities is a chance to sign fan-favorite Bobby Lagana’s Top Fuel dragster moments before he makes a 300+ mph pass, a coloring contest where fans can design their own Top Fuel dragster with the winning picture being used as an actual wrap on a dragster later in the season, a reaction time tournament with an actual IHRA tree and a chance to be the race director for a day as fans are selected to draw the first-round pairings of the professional rounds.
Fanfest will come to a close with Nitro Thunder as nearly two dozen nitro vehicles warm up at the same time, creating an experience unlike any other. And if it’s more pyrotechnic entertainment you’re seeking, each day’s action is capped by an awesome fireworks display.

Originally known as "The Nationals" and first held at an abandoned airstrip in Great Bend, Kan., the event made stops at Kansas City, Mo., Oklahoma City and Detroit before eventually moving to O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis in 1961. Past winners include "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, an eight-time winner in Top Fuel; Shirley Muldowney, 1982 Top Fuel winner; Don "The Snake" Prudhomme, a seven-time winner and one of a handful of drivers to win the event in both Top Fuel and Funny Car; and Bob Glidden, the legendary Pro Stock driver who dominated the race by advancing to the final round in 13 consecutive seasons from 1977-'89. The Indiana native won the event a record nine times. It is the only major motorsports event to be contested on Labor Day. In 2004 the event celebrated its 50th anniversary in memorable fashion with spectacular racing witnessed by one of the biggest crowds in NHRA history. Once again this year there promises to be major drama at the event as it will be the kick-off for the Countdown to 1, NHRA's six-race championship playoffs in the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship.

TRACK HISTORY: In 1958, led by Tom Binford, Frank Dickie, Rodger Ward and Howard Fieber, 15 Indianapolis-area businessmen and racing
professionals invested $5,000 each to fund the development of what would become O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. The group purchased a 267-acre farm about seven miles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and developed a multipurpose auto racing facility. The original intention in creating O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis was to design a 15-turn, 2.5-mile road course. Nearly as an afterthought, and as an insurance measure against economic problems, the investment group decided to incorporate a quarter-mile drag strip into the long straightaway of the 2.5-mile road course design. Constructed with assistance from the NHRA, the drag strip was the first of the three courses to be completed, with the facility's first event held on the strip in the fall of 1960.During the 1960 U.S. Nationals in Detroit, a handshake agreement between Binford and NHRA founder Wally Parks promised that the event would move to O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis in 1961. The historic three-year pact was signed and sealed under a tree in Detroit Dragway's pits, and O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis eventually became the home of NHRA's biggest annual event.The NHRA purchased the entire facility in 1979. The first major improvement came in 1983 with the construction and dedication of ParksTower, the four-story drag strip tower. In 1998, new grandstands, suites and a tower complex on the front straightaway were completed at the oval track at a cost of nearly $2.5 million, which included the repaving of the entire oval surface as part of a three-phase facility improvement project. In 2001, NHRA and O'Reilly Raceway Park constructed a new drag strip racing surface, replacing the strip with a 660-foot concrete pad and laying new asphalt on the remainder of the track and shutdown area. Prior to the 2003 Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, eight new luxury suites were added along the top of the west-side grandstands of the drag strip, giving fans a unique perspective of the action on the famed quarter-mile track. In 2006, new soft barrier walls were added to the oval. In 2007, the track announced its first track entitlement with O'Reilly Auto Parts. The track - formerly known as Indianapolis Raceway Park - is now known as O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. During the winter of 2008, a new main track office building was constructed near the track entrance.

EVENT HISTORY: The most historic and prestigious event in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil has been contested annually since 1955. Originally known as "The Nationals" and first held at an abandoned airstrip in Great Bend, Kan., the event made stops at Kansas City, Mo., Oklahoma City and Detroit before eventually moving to O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis in 1961. Past winners include "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, an eight-time winner in Top Fuel; Shirley Muldowney, 1982 Top Fuel winner; Don "The Snake" Prudhomme, a seven-time winner and one of a handful of drivers to win the event in both Top Fuel and Funny Car; and Bob Glidden, the legendary Pro Stock driver who dominated the race by advancing to the final round in 13 consecutive seasons from 1977-'89. The Indiana native won the event a record nine times. It is the only major motorsports event to be contested on Labor Day. In 2004 the event celebrated its 50th anniversary in memorable fashion with spectacular racing witnessed by one of the biggest crowds in NHRA history. Once again this year there promises to be major drama at the event as it will be the kick-off for the Countdown to 1, NHRA's six-race championship playoffs in the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship.

NHRA'S CELEBRATION OF SPEED AND HIGH PERFORMANCE RACES INTO 56TH YEAR AT PRESTIGIOUS MAC TOOLS U.S. NATIONALS AT INDY
INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 24, 2010) - As NHRA celebrates the 56th anniversary of the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil, the world's most prestigious drag race is set to provide its traditional offering of the very best in speed and high performance to countless thousands of hot rodding enthusiasts. More than 850 competitors in 12 different racing categories will perform in front of the standing-room only crowd during the much-anticipated Labor Day classic.
Drag Racing's biggest event takes place at revered O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, Sept. 1-6. It is the 18th of 23 events in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series for 2010 and the first of six races in the Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship, NHRA's post-season playoffs. The race will be showcased nationwide on ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD during more than 10 hours of coverage.
Each year at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil fans are offered a glimpse into the past with several exciting attractions and the 2010 edition of this legendary event is no exception.
Throughout the weekend many of the Show 'N Shine winners from the National Hot Rod Reunion will be on display in the Mac Tools Concourse. One of the beautiful vintage hot rods will be selected as the winner of the Bob Daniels Award of Excellence and will have its name permanently engraved on the prestigious perpetual trophy. All of the cars will participate in a special pre-finals parade during Monday's final eliminations.
Many of the legends of the sport will be roaming the grounds of O'Reilly Raceway Park throughout the weekend and will be featured guests in the Mac Tools Concourse where they will sign autographs at designated times on Saturday and Sunday.
As part of the pre-race show on Monday, highly-skilled skydiver Jason Peters will soar into O'Reilly Raceway Park with an American Flag in tow during the singing of the National Anthem. The famed Goodyear Blimp will be roaming the skies on Sunday and Monday providing scenic aerial shots from overhead.
Some very important anniversaries will be noted during the weekend. NHRA will unveil plans for its highly-anticipated 60th anniversary season celebration in 2011 and the U.S. Army will commemorate its 10th anniversary as a marketing partner with NHRA and Don Schumacher Racing during an official ceremony. On Saturday prior to the first qualifying session, three-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion Angelle Sampey will be honored by NHRA in an official retirement presentation.
Throughout the years fans at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis have cheered on drag racing immortals like "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, Shirley Muldowney, Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen, Bob Glidden, and Don "The Snake" Prudhomme as they raced to the winner's circle and etched their names into the NHRA record book. Today's stars - such as eight-time Mac Tools U.S. Nationals winner Tony Schumacher and four-time winner John Force - will be racing at more than 300 mph to continue to build upon their modern day legend status. For many of the competitors, the race has evolved into much more than an annual contest of speed. This year's edition of the famed event will feature intense side-by-side racing as drivers in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle chase their share of the $2 million purse, important world championship points in the Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship, and more importantly, a permanent spot in history.
Teams in the NHRA Lucas Oil Series and the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Series also will compete during the weekend. In addition, the world's fastest Super Stock cars will race for bonus bucks and bragging rights in the wildly-popular Mopar HEMI Challenge.
Prior to the start of official racing at O'Reilly Raceway Park, fans can get a taste of the excitement on Thursday, Sept. 2 at the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil Kick-Off Party, which will feature a driver autograph session, display of race cars, and live music. The Kick-Off Party starts at 4 p.m. (ET), at Lucas Oil Stadium prior to the NFL pre-season game between the Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals. Drivers scheduled to appear include Hector Arana, Larry Morgan and Morgan Lucas, among others.

The series features some of the world's fastest and most unique doorslammer cars, with an eclectic mix of vintage and late-model body styles, in quarter-mile competition. The first of four rounds of qualifying will be held on Friday, Sept. 3 at 4:30 p.m. The first round of eliminations is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 5. Eliminations will continue on Monday, Sept. 6.

Drag Racing's biggest event takes place at revered O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, Sept. 1-6. It is the 18th of 23 events in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series for 2010 and the first of six races in the Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship, NHRA's post-season playoffs. The race will be showcased nationwide on ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD during more than 10 hours of coverage.
Each year at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil fans are offered a glimpse into the past with several exciting attractions and the 2010 edition of this legendary event is no exception.
Throughout the weekend many of the Show 'N Shine winners from the National Hot Rod Reunion will be on display in the Mac Tools Concourse. One of the beautiful vintage hot rods will be selected as the winner of the Bob Daniels Award of Excellence and will have its name permanently engraved on the prestigious perpetual trophy. All of the cars will participate in a special pre-finals parade during Monday's final eliminations.
Many of the legends of the sport will be roaming the grounds of O'Reilly Raceway Park throughout the weekend and will be featured guests in the Mac Tools Concourse where they will sign autographs at designated times on Saturday and Sunday.
As part of the pre-race show on Monday, highly-skilled skydiver Jason Peters will soar into O'Reilly Raceway Park with an American Flag in tow during the singing of the National Anthem. The famed Goodyear Blimp will be roaming the skies on Sunday and Monday providing scenic aerial shots from overhead.
Some very important anniversaries will be noted during the weekend. NHRA will unveil plans for its highly-anticipated 60th anniversary season celebration in 2011 and the U.S. Army will commemorate its 10th anniversary as a marketing partner with NHRA and Don Schumacher Racing during an official ceremony. On Saturday prior to the first qualifying session, three-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion Angelle Sampey will be honored by NHRA in an official retirement presentation.
Throughout the years fans at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis have cheered on drag racing immortals like "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, Shirley Muldowney, Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen, Bob Glidden, and Don "The Snake" Prudhomme as they raced to the winner's circle and etched their names into the NHRA record book. Today's stars - such as eight-time Mac Tools U.S. Nationals winner Tony Schumacher and four-time winner John Force - will be racing at more than 300 mph to continue to build upon their modern day legend status. For many of the competitors, the race has evolved into much more than an annual contest of speed. For those who seek to become a part of its mystique, winning the event has become a must-do to complete any great driver's resume.
Schumacher (Top Fuel); Ashley Force Hood (Funny Car); Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock); and Hector Arana (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are the defending winners in their respective Full Throttle Series categories.
This year's edition of the famed event will feature intense side-by-side racing as drivers in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle chase their share of the $2 million purse, important world championship points in the Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship, and more importantly, a permanent spot in history.
Teams in the NHRA Lucas Oil Series and the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Series also will compete during the weekend. In addition, the world's fastest Super Stock cars will race for bonus bucks and bragging rights in the wildly-popular Mopar HEMI Challenge.
Prior to the start of official racing at O'Reilly Raceway Park, fans can get a taste of the excitement on Thursday, Sept. 2 at the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil Kick-Off Party, which will feature a driver autograph session, display of race cars, and live music. The Kick-Off Party starts at 4 p.m. (ET), at Lucas Oil Stadium prior to the NFL pre-season game between the Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals. Drivers scheduled to appear include Hector Arana, Larry Morgan and Morgan Lucas, among others.
