Rocky Reports: Nostalgia Summer Nationals....What a BLAST!

The Pirrone and Ellershaw race team descended on Englishtown's Raceway Park with FOUR Supercharged race cars! This was the first time we ran this many cars at one event.... and I want to thank my crew for doing such a great job! All the cars ran great with the Screamin Eagle funny car running in the 6.80's and qualifying for the final round. We also had top speed of the meet for the class with a thundering 202 mph...! Even more special to me we took home two huge awards...The "Jungle Jim" showmanship award, AND the D.A. Santucci "Spirit" award...! These two awards are great honors as both men were heros to me as a kid growing up in the sport. We had three of our Willys coupes entered in the AA/GS match race class. Ken Hall driving our "Big Time Memories" 1941 Willys took home top honors with low ET of the gassers running a 8.29... Mike Hall driving our K.S. Pittman tribute 1933 Willys ran a all time best 8.84..! and I drove the Boss Hydro to a 8.74 run over good friend and racing legend Fred Bear.

Even though the final rounds were canceled due to rain, we look forward to making them up on August 18th, at the Night of Thrills at E-Town! I'd like to thank Walter Frey for putting on the BEST nostalgia show on the east coast, along with Barb Santucci for selecting us as the recipient of the D.A. Santucci award..your the BEST Barb..! I'd also like to thank Tom Fox for giving me a FAST race car to compete in, to Bill Ellershaw for maintaining all the cars and making sure they were all ready to go come race day! To Danny Ellershaw, Michele Fiel, Liz Louvas, Ken Freight, Mike Hall, Ken Hall, Devin Pirrone, Joey Pirrone and Sonny Titus for all their hard work and dedication!

Smoking em in......putting a show on is always job one!

Mike Hall boiling the hides on the K.S. Pittman tribute car! Mike's Dad Harry Hall drove the original for many years!

Ken Hall did a excellent job wheeling the "Big Time Memories to a class low 8.29 seconds!
Ken also pilots the "Secret Weapon" jet funny car of Al Hanna...

Ken and Mike Hall are brothers, and this was the first time they ever lined up against each other! Ken won by .001 seconds!

The Boss Hydro getting ready for another "8" second run..!

Drag Racing legend Fred Bear getting ready for another assault on the 1320!

Pivotal Six Week Stretch Lies Ahead For Nitro Jam Competitors

U.S. 131 Motorsports Park next up for Nitro Jam the weekend of August 13-14

MARTIN, Mich. (July 26, 2010) – As summer weather sets in all across the nation the Nitro Jam series is preparing to heat up as well as the tour gears up for a pivotal summer stretch beginning at the Northern Nationals at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in mid-August and running through the North American Nationals in New Hampshire in September.

Beginning the weekend of August 13-14 at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park the Nitro Jam tour will hit three tracks in six weeks during a stretch that will ultimately make or break the season for professional drivers chasing the first ever Nitro Jam championship crowned under the new format. In addition to a stop in Michigan the Nitro Jam tour will also bring its new format and show to Maryland International Raceway the weekend of August 28-29 and New England Dragway the weekend of September 11-12.

Bobby Lagana, currently second in points, is looking for this first championship in Nitro Jam competition

When the dust finally settles following the summer stretch the championship picture will finally become clear heading into the series finale at Virginia Motorsports Park October 15-16 for the Nitro Jam World Finals.

All three touring classes have put on amazing shows through the first six races of the season and with the recently resurfaced U.S. 131 Motorsports Park up next fans can expect near record runs and exciting side-by-side racing all weekend long.

Through the first half of the 2010 season competition has never been tighter in Nitro Jam’s premier class as Top Fuel titans Bruce Litton and Bobby Lagana have traded the championship lead back and fourth nearly half a dozen times already this season.

Bruce Litton takes a narrow three point lead into Martin

Coming into Martin Litton is currently the man on top, bringing with him five wins, three runner-up finishes and a narrow three point lead over Lagana. Lagana, also with five wins, has been the biggest surprise so far this season with a championship caliber year for the lowest budgeted team on the tour.

Despite the David and Goliath comparisons, Lagana has managed to thrive under the new rules with some of the best numbers of his career and a class leading 18-6 round win-loss record. As the only driver among the four to have never won a championship, the final four races of the season will be pivotal for Lagana as he chases his first ever Nitro Jam title.

Behind Litton and Lagana are ’08 Top Fuel World Champion and ’09 NHRA Rookie of the Year Spencer Massey and defending champion Del Cox Jr. Cox, who took a major hit in points at Grand Bend when he failed to make the trip, has a lot of ground to make up if he wants to repeat in Top Fuel, sitting some 97 points behind the leader.

While Hamelink currently leads the Pro Fuel standings, Bill Evans (above) is hot on his heels

Not to be outdone the 100 percent nitro-powered Pro Fuel class has been just as exciting as their quicker and faster cousins with low five-second runs at over 270 miles-per-hour. Minnesota based racer Jeff Hamelink currently leads the class with one win, having amassed 283 points through the first six races this season.

Bill Evans, driver of the “Black Pearl” Pro Fuel machine, is second with a series-leading four wins, followed by Michael Manners in the “Shreddar” Pro Fuel Dragster, Robin Samsel and Rich McPhillips.

By far the most exciting new addition to the Nitro Jam formula is the incredibly popular Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car class. Featuring halftrack burnouts and on-the-edge racing, the new class has been a hit with fans as some of the best nostalgia cars in the country have joined the tour.

Steve Nichols currently has an intense battle brewing with Peter Gallen for the Prostalgia NFC championship lead

Leading the new class is Steve Nichols, driver of the “Mill Road Boys” ’70 Camaro, who has amassed 328 points via two wins and two runner-up finishes through 12 races this season. Friend and rival Peter Gallen, driver of the “Poverty Stricken” Vega, is just behind with 262 points. Gallen leads all drivers with four wins this year.

Greg Jacobsmeyer, driving the “All-Star Dodge” Challenger, is third, followed by Mike “McAttack” McIntire and John Dunn.

Easily the most competitive group of the season, six different drivers have won races this year and four more have visited at least one final round in 2010.

For all the classes the month long summer stretch will ultimately decide the championship going into the World Finals in October. Don’t miss a minute of the action at a track near you as the Nitro Jam tour travels to Michigan, Maryland and New Hampshire beginning next month.

Super Chevy Show Heads West

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 23) - It's time to head west for the Super Chevy Show.

The national touring series will conclude its 30th anniversary season with two of its final four races out west, the first scheduled for Friday, Aug. 20-Sunday, Aug. 22 at Bandimere Speedway near Denver, Colo. Then, following events in Houston and Bristol, Tenn. the season concludes at Firebird International Raceway near Phoenix on Friday, Oct. 22-Sunday, Oct. 24.

"We've been involved with Super Chevy Show for years," said racing personality Lucky Hudson, who will be at both events as a racer and sponsor, representing Currie Enterprises, with manufactures high-performance rearends. "There's a lot of excitement for the series with the new owners. We're a West-based company, so these two events are very important to us and our customers."

The Denver Super Chevy Show presented by Stevinson Chevrolet will be highlighted by a pro show that features the Six Second West Coast Outlaw Pro Mods, along with jet cars and a wheelstander. The weekend will also include sportsman racing, along with the popular Shoebox class; a car show and a vendor swap meet. There is also the Car Toys Aftershock Stage, which will provide round the clock entertainment.

The Phoenix Super Chevy Show, which will conclude the 10-race season, is one of the most-anticipated races on the tour, as this will be the Super Chevy Show's first visit to Firebird International Raceway in five seasons.

The highlights for the season finale will be the heroes of the Nostalgic Funny Car Show, who pay homage to drag racing's glory days while still providing some fantastic side-by-side competition. The show also will feature sportsman racing, the car show and vendor swap meet. An autocross is also scheduled at this event.
"The Phoenix race is going to be such a big draw," said Hudson, who in addition to representing Currie Enterprises will also be at the two races with his live online television show, Speed Scene Live. The show can be accessed via the Internet at speedsceneracing.com. "This (event) draws a lot of fans and racers from Texas and Southern California, in addition to the fans from Arizona. A lot of them came to the first race in Las Vegas, and are excited to come back.

"They are looking forward it and with the track recently resurfaced, it should be one of the top events of the season."

National Dragster Challenge at Atlanta Dragway

FAMILY WEEKEND AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY

(Commerce, GA – July 24) Atlanta Dragway picked up where it left off when last weekend's National Dragster Challenge was rained out. Competitors swarmed the track in hopes of winning a Wally, the drag racer's ultimate mantelpiece. For many, it was a chance at gaining their first Wally, while for a lucky few, it meant adding to their collection.

Joe Haddon (Oxford, GA) battled his way to the Super Pro finals in his '05 Miller Dragster, lining up against opponent Jeremy Hancock (Commerce, GA), who took a bye run to the finals in his '05 Undercover Swingarm Dragster. Haddon was dialed only slightly slower with a 4.86 prediction, next to Hancock's 4.81 dial-in. The tension built as the amber lights flashed; Hancock launched a tad early for a -.004 red light, instantly handing victory to Haddon, who left the line with a .023 green light. Haddon took a 4.85 second joy ride at 142.18 mph, while Hancock let off for a 9.43 second run at 43.55 mph. Haddon recalled last weekend's washed-out National Dragster Challenge, having broken his transmission. "I'd like to thank Paul Dooley, for offering his race car, and Brad Howard for coming the next day to fix mine." For Haddon, it's all about timing; on top of winning his first Wally, he's excited to celebrate his 18th anniversary with wife Vicky next Monday. "Thanks to all my friends who helped," Haddon added, and on a more solemn note, "this one's for our little dog Zippity," put to sleep last week. Jeremy Hancock ('05 Undercover Swingarm—Commerce, GA) placed third in the Super Pro category.

Chad Brewer ('67 Camaro—Canton, GA) made up for his losses this season when he rolled into the Pro finals next to Ken Grant ('90 Chevy 1500—Moultrie, GA). Grant was feeling lucky in the truck (driven by Jacob Rutledge) that won last weekend's World Footbrake Challenge in Bristol, and dialed in for an 8.09 second run. Brewer predicted a 7.30 run. It was anybody's race when Brewer left the line with a .055 reaction time, followed closely by Grant with a .058 green light. However, Grant held too fast to the floorboard, breaking out with an 8.07 elapsed time at 84.94 mph. Brewer set off the win lights running dead-on at 93.73 mph. "All I can say is, lucky was on my side!" Brewer humbly noted. He thanked the Mayor of Hickory Flat, Alan and Tracy Schaffer, George Mitchell, Rod Chumbley, and Jim McKelvey. J.D. Burford ('07 Corvette—Greenville, SC) placed in the Pro semi-finals.

The Sportsman finals featured Rickey Morris ('91 Mustang—Ellenwood, GA) against Mel Abney ('67 Camaro—Cumming, GA). Abney dialed in for a 13.28 run, giving Morris the tree handicap with a 15.10 dial-in. Morris left the starting line with a .046 green light, and Abney chased after with a similar .050 reaction time. For the closest race of the night, Morris crossed the win stripe in 15.12 seconds at 90.24 mph, winning with a .006 margin-of-victory over Abney's 13.30 elapsed time at 103.04 mph. Morris secured his first Wally with a lot of effort: "It was hot, and the car wasn't that well, so I had to really drive it today. I was lucky." Morris thanked his son Mickey Morris for his loyal support, David Simmons for rooting him on, Jacob Rutledge and his son for the good luck, and Racers For Christ for their special National Dragster Challenge trophy. Allen Schaffer ('87 Ram—Austell, GA) and Mark Hancock ('00 SUV—Commerce, GA) went out in the semi-final round.

"Steve Jackson ('08 Kawasaki—Bogart, GA) and Paul Lee ('00 GSXR—Mt. Airy, GA) lined up for the Motorcycle finals, Jackson with a 9.40 dial-in, a bit quicker than Lee's 10.00 second prediction. Lee left the line first, but at a snail's pace with a .271 green light; Jackson jumped the line with a .093 reaction. Jackson crossed the finish line for the win in 9.61 seconds at 128.29 mph, Lee following in 10.29 seconds at 117.29 mph. Jackson, having come to compete in order to sort out some problems with his bike, hadn't expected the honor of winning his first Wally. Jackson thanked Paul Lee "for the right lane," Paul Cavanaugh and Jay Rhyne for their support, Missy Thomas and the Atlanta Dragway crew. "I've got my first Wally, hopefully it's not my last!" Jackson also made a special thank you to his wife Joan Jackson, for all her support. Jay Rhyne ('82 Suzuki—Athens, GA) and Michael Tlapa ('00 Motorcycle—Loganville, GA) finished their evening in the semi-finals."

Last weekend's Junior Drag Racing League Challenge winner for the 8-12 Junior Dragster category, Daulton Rogers (12—Hiawassee, GA), met Austin Carden (11—McDonough, GA) in the 8-12 Junior finals for the second time consecutively. Rogers dialed in at 9.05, as Carden reared up for revenge with an 8.90 dial-in. Rogers killed the tree with an excellent .014 reaction time, Carden following with a .056 reaction. At the top end, Carden couldn't catch up to Rogers, who claimed the win in 9.08 seconds at 71.39 mph, while Carden finished in 8.92 seconds at 73.47 mph. Rogers is now catching up to Carden in points, placing third in the ranking, just under Carden's placement at number two.

The 13-17 Junior Dragster category was a final for girl power, with Kelsey Lynn (16—Marietta, GA) lined up against points leader Jennifer Jarrett (17—Cartersville, GA). The two both dialed in for 7.90 second runs, making for a heads-up race. The girls were sleepy at the tree: Lynn launched with a .106 green light, followed by Jarrett who cut a .165 reaction. Lynn held fast to the track, crossing first for the victory in 7.91 seconds at 82.59 mph. Jarrett finished in 7.98 seconds at 81.76 mph. Cole Sheriff (14—Lula, GA) placed third in the 13-17 Junior Dragster class.

Following the finals, the winners from the Motorcycle, Sportsman, Pro, and Super Pro categories competed for the "best overall package," for a $150 gift certificate for Red Horse Performance products. Steve Jackson and Joe Haddon fouled at the starting line, leaving the bonus to Chad Brewer and Ricky Morris. Brewer came out on top with a .056 package (7.31 elapsed time on a 7.29 dial-in at 93.58 mph, with a .039 reaction time), winning not only the gift certificate but free Red Horse Performance t-shirts for his crew.
