Drag Racing - The World's Fastest Sport, now available

New drag racing book covers entire spectrum of the sport

HAMILTON, ONTARIO (November 23, 2009) – It has been two years in the making, but Drag Racing - The World’s Fastest Sport is now available for fans of this popular form of auto racing.

112309The newly-released hardcover book encompasses all facets of drag racing, from a strong segment on the history of the sport to today’s top drivers in the NHRA and IHRA. There is a section on all car classes, from Stockers to Top Fuelers, a drag racing “101” primer which delves into the mechanics of the sport, and chapters devoted to women in the sport and legends of the sport.

The book is profusely illustrated with exciting and colorful photographs. The book also employs a bevy of illustrations of drag racing cars and other items related to the sport presented in a realistic fashion.

“This book has truly been a labor of love for me,” said Miller, who has written several other books on auto racing. “When I decided to attempt this book, I noticed there were many books on the sport available, but none to offer the scope that this book contains.

“While most drag racing books are about a personality, or a class of cars,” he continued, “this book covers the whole spectrum of the sport, so a novice would have a good understanding of drag racing after reading it.”

For Miller, who writes about motorsports for a daily newspaper, this is his latest racing book. His other motorsports works include three books on NASCAR, and a child’s book on auto racing.

SHEIKH KHALID AL THANI SCORES RUNNER UP FINISH IN PRO EXTREME DEBUT

(11-20-09) DOHA, Qatar – Having only the four allotted qualifying sessions for Round 1 of the Arabian Drag Racing League at the Qatar Race Club to get comfortable in his new Pro Extreme ’68 Camaro, HH Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Thani put on a tremendous driving display during the elimination rounds of the season-opening event.

Sheikh Khalid, who qualified 3rd in the field with a 3.859-second blast at 199.75mph, had to face the Qatar Race Club’s own Bader Alhi in the Todd Tutterow-tuned ’06 Ford Mustang in the opening round of action. Despite the game opponent in the other lane, the Sheikh maintained a level of collectiveness and composure that is rarely seen in a rookie driver and took out his veteran counterpart, setting up a final round against the Barwa Racing ’68 Camaro driven by 2008 Arabian Drag Racing League world champion, Von Smith.

Smith, who put the Howard Moon-tuned Pro Extreme Camaro on the pole with a 3.735 at 205.22mph, is undeniably the man to beat when it comes to drag racing in the Arabian Gulf Region, but Sheikh Khalid remained confident that his first outing as a Pro Extreme driver could very well result in his first career victory.

“Frank [Manzo, crew chief] has made me so comfortable over the course of the race, that it was easy to be confident going into our first final round together,” said Sheikh Khalid, checking in from his home in Doha. “He has such an easy going personality, and he is always teaching, so we continued to make big progress every time we took to the track.”

He continued, “With Tim [McAmis] taking care of the car and Frank the motor, it’s just been a dream to drive. These guys have this Al-Anabi Racing Camaro dialed-in, and it’s let me really focus on cutting a light and doing my job as the driver.”

No questioning his concentration, as Sheikh Khalid used a 19-thousands-of-a-second starting line advantage to hold Smith off until about half-track when the hard charging Barwa Camaro slipped by, taking the win with a 3.758/205.69mph combination to His Highness’ 3.860-second, 198.06mph effort.

“I really wanted to leave on Von,” said Sheikh Khalid. “I managed to pull it off, but they got the best of us on the other end. It was a great showing for this entire organization, though, and I couldn’t be happier to see Von and Howard win Round 1 at the QRC. This was a stellar weekend, and for our newest sponsor, Barwa, to see the winner’s circle in their first outing is incredible.”

Frank Manzo, who has earned almost innumerable wins in the NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car category, had nothing but good things to say about his new driver.

“Sheikh is a tuner’s driver,” said Manzo, direct from the pits of the state-of-the-art Qatar Race Club. “He listens and makes the adjustments that need to be made. I couldn’t ask for more. We would have loved to get this first win together, but we’ll give it another shot here in a few weeks during Round 2.”

2009 Atlanta Dragway Summit Series awards ceremony coverage

ATLANTA DRAGWAY BANQUET HONORS MANY FIRST-TIME CHAMPIONS

By Amy Glover

Reuniting racers one last time for the 2009 season, the annual Atlanta Dragway Summit Series awards ceremony took place Nov. 21 at The American Legion post 127.

It didn’t take long to get the party started; attendees exchanged non-stop chatter over cake and hot wings. The casual atmosphere of the banquet preserved the true spirit of racing.

General manager Ray Wilkings began the ceremony with credit to Atlanta Dragway’s sponsors: VP Racing Fuels, Coca Cola, and the people at Year One, as well as all the other sponsors that keep the track going. Wilkings asked that everyone support the sponsors that support the track, and finally thanked everyone that “comes and races with us.” He also noted, “There’s a gathering of racers and there’s rain predicted tonight,” a running joke about the inclement weather that often affects the points season.

Wilkings announced that the new Saturday Insanity series would continue on in the 2010 season, noting that there would be an Open Wheel class available for the more powerful rides.

With modest beginnings, the Saturday Insanity series has given racers a new way to have some fast fun, and the top points earners have procured the honorable recognition of being among the first to place in the series.

In the 7.50 Index class, Stephen Rhoads & Ricky Page tied for third place, and Randall Roop held the runner-up position. John Norris, a Summit series regular, came out on top with 200 points total.

The 6.50 Index had no room for ties; T.J. Thomas placed third, Matt Ward earned the silver, and Joe Rampley got the gold with 170 points.

The Open Comp (Full-Bodied) class included Jimmy Mason in third, Travis Bryant and Bill Boomhower tying for second place, and Charlie McCulloch topping the ranks with a 40 point lead, having dominated the competition with two wins.

The special awards segment of the banquet recognized Atlanta Dragway racers and staff for their hard work beyond the starting line. ‘Most Improved Driver’ went to John Norris, who placed in both the Saturday Insanity series and the Summit series. Joe Haddon won ‘Most Inspirational Driver,’ for his friendship and support throughout the year. The ‘Sportsmanship Award’ went to Howard Warren, and Allen Long was recognized as the ‘High School Champion.’ Amy Gunter won ‘Employee of the Year,’ earning 100 percent of the award with 30 years of dedication towards the track.

Then came the aesthetic awards, where the cars were the stars. Paul Cavanaugh was recognized for having the best-looking motorcycle, an ’02 Hayabusa. Mel Abney’s dark blue ’67 Camaro was voted the best-looking Sportsman car. Justin Buchanan’s charcoal ’72 Nova won best-looking Pro car, and Stan Sinack’s striking red ’69 Dart won best-looking car of Super Pro.

The final portion of the awards ceremony was dedicated to the champions of the top four classes: Motorcycle, Sportsman, Pro, and Super Pro. Each champion represented the top of their class, running the most successful rounds out of the pool of competition.

Jay “Bird” Rhyne claimed his sixth Motorcycle championship, donning his new embroidered coat over his fleece winner’s jacket from ’98. Upon handing over the trophy, Wilkings remarked, “like he needs another jacket,” handing over the microphone to the “man of few words,” who took the lead by a staggering 190 points. Rhyne thanked “all the guys and girls who work at Atlanta Dragway, I appreciate it.” Surprisingly, he had no more to say. Friend and fellow competitor Tim Sutton lightheartedly warned us that it would soon “be the end of an era,” though Rhyne is ready and anxious for the next season to begin.

J.D. “Doc” Burford won the Sportsman championship, his very first after only three years of racing. The practicing medicine man thanked “all the Atlanta Dragway crew with two jobs – one during the week, and one on the weekend.” He also thanked his “fellow competitors, because we all have to show up to make it a good race.” Burford held the top position against friend Mel Abney, who was close behind all season. There’s a doctor in the House of Speed, and he’s here to stay.

Chad Brewer took home his first Pro championship. Brewer never missed a points race this season, winning a handful that sent him to the top. As always, Brewer grinned and said, “I’ve got to thank the Mayor of Hickory Flat” because “he always slapped me back into it.” He also gave a nod to the staff, “You guys did a hell of a job.” Brewer plans to stick to Pro after a solid, successful season.

Jeremy Hancock won the Super Pro championship, along with the most heartwarming speech of the night. He credited his first Super Pro title to God “for everything,” thanked his “wife, because she lets me race and doesn’t complain,” and thanked his mother-in-law Paula “because she lets me borrow money when I need it.” He then most sincerely thanked his dad: “He’s the real champ, and I hope I can be half the dad he is.” Hancock dedicated his triumph to the late Buford Heavy, and gave the trophy to Heavy’s wife Beverly. Hancock also proved his fighting spirit at the Bracket Finals, placing second in the Division 2 race.

Wilkings closed the ceremony by announcing some news regarding the 2010 season. The schedule will be posted at the end of the year, with 31 additional events – due to the success of Fast Friday, there will now be ‘Tuesday Tune-ups,’ a midweek opportunity for the curious car owner or the travelling racer. Also, the “Night of Fire” will become an all-star race, requiring competitors to hold rank in the points standings to compete at the popular event. Wilkings thanked everyone for coming, congratulated the winners, and expressed a common wish for the next season: “Maybe we’ll get some good weather next year.”

IHRA Announces Special Award Winners

Hoover earns IHRA’s highest honor; Gugliotta, Lang, Lagana, Gulitti and VP Racing Fuels take home special awards

After a season filled with tight point battles and incredible racing it was not easy selecting this year’s IHRA special award winners, but in the end five names rose to the top and will add their names to the IHRA history books.

Ed Hoover took home IHRA’s highest honor in 2009 as Sportsman of the Year, while Frank Gugliotta (Crew Chief of the Year), Kenny Lang (Pro Driver of the Year), Bobby Lagana Jr. (People’s Choice), Chris Gulitti (Sportsman Driver of the Year) and VP Racing Fuels (Sponsor of the Year) also took home end-of-season hardware for 2009.

“It was an extremely competitive and, at times, crazy year for the IHRA, but in the end our award winners from this past season persevered and showed what IHRA racing is all about,” said IHRA President Aaron Polburn.

At the top of that list is veteran Ed Hoover.

Sportsman of the Year is an award reserved only for the elite in IHRA competition. With on track performance put aside, the award is given to a driver who represents the true spirit of competition and conducts him or herself in a manner befitting an IHRA competitor.

Simply put, Sportsman of the Year is widely considered IHRA’s “Hall of Fame” award.

Hoover adds his name to a distinguished list of past winners after an incredible season and career with IHRA. Known as one of the innovators of the Pro Modified class, Hoover won the very first Pro Mod race back in 1990 and he hasn’t looked back since.

While on-track performance is not a component of the Sportsman of the Year award, Hoover’s numbers simply can’t be ignored. After nearly 20 years behind the wheel of a Pro Mod machine Hoover has tallied an impressive 17 career victories, good enough for fourth all-time, and 29 career final rounds.

With the help of team owner Paul Trussell, Hoover put together his best season yet in 2009 with five final round appearances and a runner-up finish in the championship standings.

With his driving talents put aside, where Hoover really stands out is off the track where he is always willing to lend a helping hand. And it is for that reason that Hoover, after decades traveling the IHRA circuit, has earned the distinction as IHRA Sportsman of the Year in 2009.

While Hoover had a career year in 2009, the only thing standing between him and a championship was Kenny Lang, the recipient of this year’s Pro Driver of the Year award.

Lang had an unprecedented season behind the wheel of his ’53 Corvette with eight final round appearances in 10 races, four victories and a 27-6 round win-loss record. Thanks to that incredible season Lang was able to cruise to his second consecutive IHRA World Championship and easily take home Pro Driver of the Year honors.

“Being named Driver of the Year is a huge accomplishment and we are very happy to get that kind of recognition. Obviously we did have a very good year. Right from the get go everything went about as well as it could have gone,” Lang said. “We stumbled a little bit earlier in the year and I think if we could have latched on to our early problems we could have had an even better year.

“Still eight finals in a row, four wins, being top qualifier at a majority of the races – if you put everything on the table it is pretty much as good as it can get.”

Another driver who enjoyed an incredibly successful 2009 campaign is Pro Stock competitor Frank Gugliotta.

Joining the three-car Elite Motorsports Pro Stock team at the beginning of the year, Gugliotta helped tune himself into championship contention – leading the points for a majority of the season before slipping to third – and his teammates into major threats. Known as one of the top tuners in the sport, Gugliotta’s incredible season has earned him Crew Chief of the Year.

“I certainly wasn’t expecting this, I am in shock,” Gugliotta said with a laugh. “Honestly for us to come one race away from winning a championship with a brand new team and for all of us to have the kind of year we had is pretty remarkable.”

Tuning his own car into championship contention is one thing, but Gugliotta will admit that trying to make three cars competitive is no easy task.

“It is very difficult. You would think each car would want the same thing, but each one has a mind of its own,” Gugliotta said. “And when you take in the driver aspect it makes it that much more difficult. Each driver has a different driving technique so that makes it harder to get it just right.

“We had a good year, but I can’t take all the credit. We have a lot of people over here helping us, but this is still quite an honor.”

In the sportsman ranks no driver had more success on more levels this season than Chris Gulitti.

Behind the wheel of his ’96 Firebird Top Sportsman machine Gulitti swept all four Tournament of Champions qualifiers with a national event win, a Sportsman Nationals victory, a win in the Summit All-Star race and a second place finish in the Renegades Division on the Summit Pro-Am Tour.

For that Gulitti not only earned a spot in the inaugural Tournament of Champions, he also earned the Sportsman Driver of the Year award.

“This means a lot to us. My team, myself, my father, my wife, Raymond Goodkowski and Ed Williams – everyone that has helped us this season, this is just an incredible honor,” Gulitti said. “We have worked really hard on our program and we stuck to what we felt was working and it has really paid off.

“We are not always the fastest guys out there, but we can certainly be competitive and when we have to we will get in there and make some noise.”

IHRA’s top sponsor award in 2009 belongs to VP Racing Fuels.

VP Racing Fuels has always been a major player in the world of motorsports. In 2009 VP stepped up to be the official race fuel of IHRA and they made a huge difference at the track. IHRA racers experienced better performance, more consistent runs and the confidence that the VP fuel they use would not vary from race to race.

It is for that reason and many more that VP Racing Fuels has earned IHRA’s Sponsor of the Year award for 2009.

“We’re extremely proud to be named IHRA’s Sponsor of the Year,” said Steve Burns, VP’s President and CEO. “We worked hard to make the most of our long-sought opportunity to work with IHRA this year. The response we’ve received from the teams, fans and series has been fantastic and we appreciate it.”

The final award given out this season is one that can sometimes mean the most to a driver – People’s Choice. With fans given the chance to select the winner it means a lot to a driver to know he or she is considered a fan favorite.

In 2009 that award goes to one of the most likable drivers in the pits and someone who has been a staple of IHRA drag racing for the past decade – Top Fuel driver Bobby Lagana Jr.

“It means a lot to know that we have so many fans out there cheering us on. We thrive on our fans and it is exciting to have that kind of support,” Lagana said.

After a successful 2009 campaign IHRA now turns its attention to the 2010 season which begins January 29-30 at Palm Beach International Raceway.

American Drivers Win Season Opener for Arabian Drag Racing League

DOHA, QATAR (Nov. 20, 2009) — American Drag Racing League (ADRL) stars Von Smith and Mike Castellana made their 14-hour, one-way trips to Doha, Qatar, pay off by winning the Pro Extreme and Pro Nitrous event titles, respectively, in the 2009-10 season opener for the Arabian Drag Racing League.

In the Pro Extreme final for supercharged entries, Oak Ridge, Tennessee’s Smith overcame a 19-thousandths of a second starting-line advantage by Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al-Thani to win with a 3.758 pass at 205.69 mph over the eighth mile at the Qatar Race Club. Sheikh Khalid ran 3.860 at 198.06 mph to record a runner-up finish in his first appearance as a Pro Extreme driver.

In Pro Nitrous, Castellana, from Westbury, New York, left with a .029 light and posted a 3.931-seconds win at 191.70 mph, while Khalid Al-Balooshi, who won the American Drag Racing League Pro Nitrous world championship at Ennis, Texas, last month, shook the tires off the start and coasted to a 7.121 at 89.74-mph finish.

“This has been a great event,” said Kenny Nowling, president and CEO for the O’Fallon, Missouri-based American Drag Racing League and the Arabian Drag Racing League. “I’m so impressed by the facilities and event staff over here and can’t wait for the next race in two weeks when we’ll be back at the beautiful Qatar Race Club facility.”

Sheikh Khalid Continues to Impress in Drag Racing Debut

DOHA, QATAR (Nov. 20, 2009) — The boss can drive! That’s the message everyone has received at the opening round of the 2009-10 Arabian Drag Racing League season, where Al-Anabi Racing owner His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al-Thani is making his debut behind the wheel of a supercharged 1968 Camaro Pro Extreme entry.

Sheikh Khalid placed third in qualifying with a 3.859-seconds pass at 199.75 mph over the eighth mile at the Qatar Race Club facility, near Doha, Qatar. He initiated the run with an impressive .011 reaction time and then ran .959 to the 60-foot marker and 2.615 seconds to half-track.

The Sheik is driving a brand-new car built by Tim McAmis Race Cars in Hawk Point, Missouri, and has multi-time Alcohol Funny Car champion Frank Manzo calling the shots as his crew chief.

“I’m very comfortable in the car,” Sheikh Khalid said. “But seeing Frank Manzo out in front of the car, bringing me into the lights, that makes me feel even more confident.”

Kenny Nowling, president and CEO of the Arabian Drag Racing League and holder of the same roles with the O’Fallon, Missouri-based American Drag Racing League (ADRL), said it’s “nothing short of remarkable” how well Sheikh Khalid has taken to handling a Pro Extreme car.

“Sheikh Khalid’s performance here is a testament to Tim McAmis and Frank Manzo for putting together a great program, but at the end of the day you have to drive the car and I can honestly say I’ve never been more impressed by a first-time entrant,” Nowling stated. “Make no mistake about it, these cars are animals and very difficult to drive, a Pro Extreme car is probably the hardest car to handle in drag racing today and the Sheikh is doing a fantastic job.”

Now in the semi-finals, Sheikh Khalid will face off against Bader Ahli; driving the same ’06 Mustang his crew chief, Todd Tutterow, drove to the U.S.-based ADRL’s Pro Extreme world championship last month at Ennis, Texas. The winner of that match will then race top qualifier (3.735/205.22) Von Smith of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for the event title.

In Pro Nitrous, newly crowned American Drag Racing League champion Khalid Al-Balooshi took the top qualifying position with a 3.823-seconds pass at 196.24 mph, followed by teammate Mike Castellana at 3.935 and 191.75 mph. Nitrous tuning legend Shannon “Iceman” Jenkins is serving as crew chief on both cars.

Nowling said he becomes more impressed with the facilities and fans with each trip he makes to Doha with several of the American Drag Racing League’s key event staff in tow to make sure things run smoothly.

“Just as they have in the States, the competitors and fans here in Qatar have taken to eighth-mile racing with great enthusiasm,” Nowling said. “It’s amazing to be half a world away and see the excitement for ADRL acing growing as fast as the leaf piles in my front yard back home!”

A serious look at new Super Chevy Show owners

TAKE A SERIOUS LOOK AT THE SUPER CHEVY SHOW OWNERSHIP GROUP

KANSAS CITY (Nov. 18, 2009) - The recent SCSW, Inc. purchase of the Super Chevy Show series represents a completely different concept in the world of motorsports in general, and drag racing in particular. People with racing experience who have invested their careers in the sport are now invested in the series. The benefactors of the purchase will be fans, sponsors, racers and participants.

Drag racing facility owners and operators throughout the United States formed the American Promoters Association (APA) in early 2009. As part of their discussions and work through the APA, several highly experienced track operators became interested in the opportunity to build or acquire their own series. Those owners wanted to put their experience and dedication to the sport into a national series. They formed SCSW, Inc., and purchased the Super Chevy Show series.

The board of directors for SCSW is like a 'Who's Who' in drag racing history:  President - John Bandimere Jr.; Executive Vice President - Lex Dudas, Vice Presidents - Bill Bader, Charlie Allen, Bryan Pierce, and Secretary Treasurer - Billy Meyer.

Bandimere is the owner and operator of Bandimere Speedway in Denver. Bandimere Speedway will host a Super Chevy Show event in August. It will be the first time the Speedway has hosted a Super Chevy event in several years.

Anyone who knows Bandimere will agree that he is not a gambling man. But if he was, well, he would bet big on the Super Chevy Show series.

"There is a tremendous amount of talent within the group of operators who now control the Super Chevy Show," Bandimere said. "One person may have a great way to deal with new sponsors. One person may have a tremendous program for selling tickets. Another will be an expert on participant relations. We are going to take the best methods and apply them all to this one series.  This gives us the opportunity to work together and develop a great series.  If I was a betting man, I would bet that this series is going to blossom and we are going to bring it back to being the historically great event that it has been in the past."

Events like the Super Chevy Show have typically been owned by just one individual or one company who rented facilities to host events. They merely paid a small fee to the track owner to use the facility for the event date. In that scenario the promoter operated everything from afar and only came to the venue on the week of an event and provided assignment for track staff.

SCSW is not a single entity promoter; it is only a resource to help provide a point of coordination for the track owners. Now the host tracks will have a stake in ownership and each will be personally involved with the overall series and will be personally responsible for their event.

SCSW is working to hire the competition director position that will help guide the activities at each event, and SCSW is also is working with Forward Sports Marketing on the promotional elements for the series that include sponsorship, media and fan interaction.
"A racer at a recent event put it in perspective to me on what it means for tracks to now own a series," Forward Sports Marketing's Ryan Haas said. "They said that all of the sanctioning bodies from ADRL, NMRA, NMCA, NHRA, IHRA, etc.... basically rent or partner with track owners just like the Super Chevy Show Series used to do every season.  Now the tracks own the series and are personally invested in the success of the series.

"The tracks hosting the 2010 Super Chevy Show series selected the dates for the schedule, and have committees that will decide everything from racing classes to car show awards and other aspects of the show. It is amazing to be on a conference call with 10 national-caliber track owners and operators to see how well they work together on a project like this."

Bandimere said the anticipation is brewing across the nation as the ownership group works to put together a thrilling season of Super Chevy Show events.

"I can feel and see the excitement growing with the SCSW members," Bandimere said. "This has everyone focused on putting on a great show in 2010."

PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series winners honored at Annual Champions Banquet

Bruce Boland and Kevin Wicke win 2009 titles, Carl Spiering receives
The John Massingberd Memorial Award

NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO (November 14, 2009) – For 2009, the Fifth Annual Champions Banquet to honor the drivers and teams of the Pro Modified Racing Association was held in conjunction with the First Annual Champions Night for the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts.

Master of ceremonies Larry Satchell guided the sold out, full-to-capacity room at the Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel in Niagara Falls, Ontario through the proceedings, which was highlighted by the recognition of the Top Five finishers in each series.

Bruce Boland of Hamilton, Ontario, took the PMRA title for 2009, his third consecutive Point Award Series Championship.

Winning the inaugural Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts Championship was Kevin Wicke of Stratford, Ontario.

Taking second in the PMRA Championship Point Award Series standings was Mark Nielsen of Brantford, Ontario, and third was Jeff Roth of Kitchener, Ontario.

Fourth was Eric Latino of Scarborough, Ontario, and rounding out the Top Five in the Pro Modified Racing Association series was Jason Kalso of Clarkston, Michigan.

Placing second behind Wicke and his Top Sportsman Dodge Stratus in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series was Jamie Bridge of Napanee, Ontario in his dragster.

Third was Carl Spiering of Jordan Station, Ontario, with his Cobalt Top Sportsman entry, fourth was Michael Kalin of Youngstown, New York with his dragster, and fifth was T.J. Schippling of Shakespeare, Ontario, with his dragster.

Boland, who won his third PMRA title with his third different car, said he couldn’t have won the championship without help from his crew and sponsors.

“I want to thank all my crew, and my sponsors,” said Boland, “and a special thanks to Backwoods Excavating. I couldn’t have done it without your help.”

Now in the process of building a new car, Boland said he will return to PMRA racing in 2009.

“And a notice to all you crew chiefs,” he said during his victory speech at the banquet.

”Tune up those cars for next year. I will be back.”

During his award speech, Wicke noted the team struggled a bit but all the pieces fell into place during the season. “This is a great honor,” he said. “We had some tough competition this year. There are some great teams in this new series, and we are honored to finish on top. I want to thank my crew, and their families for allowing us to do what we love, and I want to thank out sponsors for making it all happen.”

The Top Five PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series Teams each received a copy of Tim Miller’s new book, “Drag Racing – The World’s Fastest Sport.”

There were several awards presented during the evening graciously supplied by sponsors, for which both the PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series is grateful.

These included:

RPM Senior Drag Race Editor Ian Rae presented two RPM Magazine Editor’s Choice Awards, one to PMRA Champion Bruce Boland, and the other to Kevin Wicke, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series Champion.

The Quick 32 Sportsman Series Bear's Performance Products Dash 4 Cash Award was presented by Kevin Zimmer, Marketing Manager of Bear's Performance Products, to Michael Kalin, who then donated his award to Team JAXS.

Winner of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series Wiseco Piston Award was Top Dragster competitor Tony Positano.

The Wild Boar Racing Gear Sportsmanship Awards were presented by Scott Wildgust, to Jamie Bridge of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series and Eric Latino of the PMRA.

Peter Hyde on behalf of Ideal Supply and Hyde Racing made special presentations to Quick 32 Sportsman Series competitors and the series officials.

Commissioned by Jim Salemi of G-Force Race Cars, artist Val Potter presented individual prints of PMRA Champion Bruce Boland and Quick 32 Sportsman Series Champion Kevin Wicke. Artist Potter donated her contribution for her work to Team JAXS.

During the ceremonies, a new award was presented to honor the spirit of former auto racing personality John Massingberd. This award, The John Massingberd Memorial Award, will be presented annually to an individual in recognition of their commitment, dedication and passion to the sport.

For 2009, this award was presented to Carl Spiering by Tim Miller, Kevin Wicke, Paul Massingberd, Bruce Mehlenbacher, Bruce Boland and Jim Salemi.

Now a regular racer in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, Spiering was involved with the PMRA as a competitor since its inception, and was instrumental in the creation of both the PMRA and the Quick 32 Sportsman Series.

“This is indeed an honor,” said a surprised Spiering after receiving the accolade. “I knew John for a long time, and he was a great friend of our sport. He helped bring drag racing to the forefront. His presence will be missed.”

PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series Director of Operations Bruce Mehlenbacher thanked all the teams and the race venues. He also thanked the sponsors of the series, emphasizing everyone’s importance in the series.
