IHRA Welcomes Green Cove Dragway to Member Track Family

Green Cove Dragway becomes sixth IHRA track in the state of Florida

NORWALK, Ohio (September 6, 2013) – The International Hot Rod Association is pleased to welcome Green Cove Dragway, located just outside of Jacksonville, Florida, to the IHRA member track family.

Owned and operated by Pete Scalzo of the Motorsports Management Group, Green Cove Dragway is slated to open sometime later this year and will begin full operation in 2014. Green Cove Dragway, which is located 40 miles south of Jacksonville, will be an 1/8 mile facility located on the grounds of a business park and will give IHRA a much needed presence in northern Florida. Green Cove Dragway is the sixth track from the state of Florida to join the IHRA.

"Green Cove will give IHRA a presence in northern Florida which we haven't had in a couple of years," said Phil Gingerich, IHRA Director of Track Development. "The facility has plenty of parking and plenty of room to host a major event sometime in the future. And with Jacksonville so close by, the track has a huge area to draw racers and fans from.

"They are really excited about the track down there. From the town to the mayor, they are all thrilled to death to have something come in and generate business."

For more information on Green Cove Dragway visit www.greencovedragway.com and for more information on the IHRA family of member tracks, visit www.ihra.com.

Carolina Dragway Hosts Wild Weekend of IHRA Summit Pro-Am Action

Points battles heat up as Summit Pro-Am Tour enters home stretch

AIKEN, S.C. (September 5, 2013) – After two weather-forced postponements and another close call with rain this time around, the Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL doubleheader at Carolina Dragway was finally completed the weekend of August 23-24.

For the most part the weekend was dominated by drivers not in contention for the Division 2 Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour podium, with only Super Stock points leader and current runner-up Michael Crumpler and Robbie Draughon making any real dents out of the Heat Wave Division with a win and a runner-up finish respectively.

Day 2 Super Stock winner Michael Crumpler

Other winners from the doubleheader at Carolina Dragway were Rube Allman and Calvin Snow (Top Sportsman), Michael White and Jim Onda (Top Dragster), Jake Sealey and Michael Crumpler (Super Stock), Kevin Riner and Ricky Pennington (Stock), Cameron Manuel and Mark Miles (Quick Rod), Matt Tankersley and Tracy Barnes (Super Rod) and Joseph Bagwell and Brian Crumpler (Hot Rod). Winner in the Good Vibrations Junior Dragster classes were Paul Charett and Dawson Pauley (Master), Gage Burch and Carlie Dorn (Advanced) and Wallace Wilson (Beginner).

Division 2 Super Stock points leader Michael Crumpler extended that mark with his second final of the season and his first win. Crumpler, out of Elm City, N.C., defeated Cody Phillips in his '67 Chevy II PEA-2 class car, running a 6.597 on a 6.58 dial at 99.33 mph while Phillips broke out by -.009. The No. 2 man in points, Robbie Draughon, drove his '69 Camaro to a runner-up finish to Jake Sealey in Race 1.

Drivers currently not in the top three in their division, but making a bid for a podium finish and a potential spot in the Tournament of Champions at the Summit World Finals at Memphis included Steve Dweck and Matt Tankersley.

Day 1 Super Rod winner Matt Tankersley

Dweck came into the race at Carolina Dragway third in the Top Dragster standings, but he managed to reach the finals and quarterfinals to increase his chances of making the TOC field. Dweck's runner-up finish came at the hands of Michael White who drove his 2011 American dragster to the win on Day 1 with a 4.645 on a 4.63 with a .004 light, while Dweck lost it on the tree with a .072 bulb. In the other Top Dragster final Jim Onda defeated D2 points leader Victor Fera who broke out by -.003 at the stripe. Fera has now visited three finals in the past four D2 races.

In Super Rod fifth place in points coming in Matt Tankersley made his case for the top three with a Day 1 win over Kenny Salter who broke out by -.012. Tankersley had a tremendous pass with a perfect triple zero on the tree and a 6.418 on a 6.40 at 117.15 mph. In the other Super Rod final Tracy Barnes defeated Ernie Knight in one of the closest drag racing contests you will ever see. Both drivers had identical .005 reaction times and Barnes got the win in a double-breakout by one thousandth of a second. Barnes ran a 6.399 on a 6.40 while Knight had a 6.398 on a 6.40.

The only double finalists from the weekend came in Good Vibrations Junior Dragster Beginner and Stock.

Day 2 Top Sportsman winner Calvin Snow

Junior Beginner competitor Wallace Wilson out of Taylors, S.C. had a pair of wins over Paige Campbell and Mallory Logan, while Riner had a win and a runner-up in Stock Eliminator driver his B/FIA '98 Camaro. Riner had a win over Ray Grace in Race 1 and finished runner-up to Ricky Pennington in Race 2.

Santa Ana Drag Strip and Main Street Malt Shop Reunion

Leslie Long and Gene Mitchell are planning another Santa Ana Drag Strip and Main Street Malt Shop Reunion on Saturday, October 12, 2013 from 10 AM to 2 PM, or until you decide to go home.  Gene Mitchell will cater the reunion for free and bring sandwiches, drinks, snacks, salad trays and desserts, all free of cost.  Leslie will bring his extensive photo albums and research on the Santa Ana Drag Strip and also on dry lakes land speed time trial photographs from El Mirage.  The event will be at Santiago Creek Park, right next to the creek bed, in a lovely tree shaded park setting with benches, tables, chairs and easy-up tents.  Directions to the reunion; Santiago Creek Park is on East Memory Lane, just a quarter-mile east of Main Street on the border of the cities of Santa Ana and Orange.  Turn off Main Street and go about a 1/4 mile to a signal called Lawson Way, turn right (towards the south) and drive down the embankment into the paved over creek bed.  You will see the park right on the other side of the creek, up a few stairs.  There is no cost to attend, for food or to park; and there is no registration or check in time.  You simply come, bring your memories and photo albums and meet your old friends that you raced against.  We welcome those who are younger and never came to the old Santa Ana Drag Strip.  The reunion also honors the Main Street Malt Shop, where the local Santa Ana kids used to hang out before and after the drag races.  This was their local place to be seen.  Bring pencil, paper, camcorders, photo albums and your children and grandchildren.  There are places to hike and a playground for the kids.  If you have any questions, contact me at Rnparks1@juno.com, or go to www.landspeedracing.com.   Leslie Long, Gene Mitchell and Richard Parks.

PS-and if you have a reunion in your area please send me the news to publish in the newsletter.

More information and updates on this and other reunions can be found on www.landspeedracing.com.

Congratulations to Michael and Tara Parks on the birth of their daughter Violet Julia Parks.  This is Epi and my 6th grandchild and the 7th great-grandchild of Wally Parks.  My niece, Mari Parks Bell and her husband Matt, are expecting their first child, a girl, in December.  Mari is the daughter of my brother David and his wife Barbara Parks.
