Woodburn Dragway Race Results, April 3, 2011

WOODBURN DRAGSTRIP  Woodburn, Ore. (April 3, 2011)

“Winning” – You may have heard that word a lot lately.  Recently I have wanted to use that word in a way that I could figure out its true meaning. Weddle, Maul, Cady Jr, Lind, and Hilton proved its meaning at the first Sunoco Race Fuels ET Series event at Woodburn Dragstrip in 2011.

It was a beautiful sunny day and good times prevailed.  Dave Sattem scored perfect lights in each of the first two rounds in Super Pro. Dennis Weddle and Danny Wargnier each had identical reaction times in their final in Super Pro.  John Maul and David Chun, Jr. left the line separated by a mere .004 of a second. Gordon Cady, Jr used a .01 advantage at the line for his win in Sportsman.

Joseph Lind made the trip from Renton, WA and defeated all in the Bike/Sled Class.  Hilton recovered from his first round loss to earn the top money in Run Tuff.  The day was highlighted by close racing action, licensing runs, test runs and even some pre-season shake-downs from Mitch Chamberlin in his AA/S ’51 Chevy.

Following is the final results listing the driver, city, car, reaction time, elapsed time, miles per hour and dial in.

Big Sal Cammisuli anxious to get into PMRA drag racing with new Corvette

"I don't want to play around. I want to run fast."

MARKHAM, ONTARIO (April 4, 2011) – Big Sal Cammisuli said he is getting anxious to get into his new Pro Modified and compete in the upcoming Pro Modified Racing Association season.

"I'm all ready," he said. "I just can't wait to let the clutch out."

A doorcar racing veteran, Cammisuli has stepped up his efforts in 2011 for his first year in PMRA action. His ZR1 Corvette Pro Modified is ready for opening day.

Although he has had a little experience with supercharged cars throughout his racing, the engine in the ZR1 will be a new experience for him, he said. The 526-cubic inch Brad Anderson (BAE) Hemi has been built and maintained by noted Pro Modified racer Mike Janis of Jan-Cen Racing Engines, and Cammisuli said he will be relying on Jan-Cen for assistance.

"I'm a former nitrous guy," he explained. "I'll be relying on and consulting with Mike (Janis) and John Vouros with this blower car."

A PSI Screw-type Supercharger sits atop the engine, and a three-speed Lenco transmission sits behind the engine in the Stroupe Race Cars chassis. Son Patrick Cammisuli will crew chief for the team, which will receive its main sponsorship from ProT Screen Printing and Embroidery.

Cammisuli has been drag racing since the early 1980s, some of that time as a driver, and some as a team owner.

He has raced in several doorcar classes, including the OSCA and the former Outlaw Pro Stock series at Cayuga, but he got his first taste of the speedy Pro Modifieds about 20 years ago when the class was just beginning.

"Back in 1991 I bought Al Billes' Pro Modified," he said. "I got my Pro Modified license and it all started from there."

He also did some tuning for Rob Sporring's team when the PMRA got underway seven seasons ago, and always wanted to get behind the wheel of his own Pro Modified.

"I liked the atmosphere of the PMRA," he said. "I thought it was well-organized, and I liked the professionalism. I think it's a great organization."

And Cammisuli said he will be at the top of his game when he suits up for the PMRA season opener May 20-22 for the Victoria Day Weekend Challenge at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park.

"I want to see what the blower car will do," he said. "I don't want to play around. I want to run fast."

FULL THROTTLE SERIES RESULTS SUNDAY FROM LAS VEGAS

HIGHT, BROWN AND EDWARDS WIN SUMMITRACING.COM NHRA NATIONALS AT LAS VEGAS

LAS VEGAS – Robert Hight continued John Force Racing’s domination of the Funny Car category by racing to victory Sunday at the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Antron Brown (Top Fuel) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) also were winners at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.

Hight’s victory, his second of the season, was the fifth in a row for the team, which included two wins to close the 2010 season by John Force and last month’s Tire Kingdom Gatornationals victory by Mike Neff. Hight, who also won the season opening Kragen O’Reilly Winternationals, moved into the series lead with the win, his second at this event and 20th of his career.

Hight, who beat Jim Head, Jack Beckman and Cruz Pedregon in earlier rounds, held off Johnny Gray in the final round. Hight’s Auto Club Ford Mustang covered the distance in 4.149 at 307.79 to edge Gray’s Service Central Dodge Charger at the finish line, which ran 4.169 at 301.81.

“It’s not getting any easier, but it’s a lot of hard work,” Hight said. “If you let your guard down any little bit you are going to get beat. I had close side-by-side races in every round. In the final, Johnny Gray stepped up and made his best run of the weekend. There are no easy ones. Jim Head was right there in the first round. It makes it feel better when you can get a win like this. In this day and age in this competition, it’s awesome. We’ve got to keep it going. This was the 199th career victory for John Force Racing and it would be great to get the 200th at Charlotte.”

Brown defeated Brandon Bernstein for the Top Fuel victory. It was Brown’s 26th career victory (10th in Top Fuel) and first ever at this track. Brown posted a 3.887 at 318.84 in his Aaron’s/Matco Tools dragster to cross the finish line in front of Bernstein’s Copart dragster, which trailed with a 3.947 at 311.13.

“This car was great all weekend and it feels good to hit the jackpot here in Vegas,” said Brown, who beat Morgan Lucas, Tony Schumacher and Doug Kalitta to advance to the final round. “This weekend everything felt right. Our team just stepped up. We knew it was going to be cooler out there today and when we ran that (3.84) in the second round it really raised some eyebrows. We had to give it all we had and kept it going throughout eliminations. We got it done.”

Series leader Del Worsham lost in the semifinals and now leads Brown by eight points. Past multi-time world champs Tony Schumacher and Larry Dixon both lost in the second round and are third and fourth in the point standings, respectively.

Edwards claimed his first Pro Stock win of the season and second straight at this event by defeating rookie and first time finalist Vincent Nobile. Edwards ran 6.695 at 205.98 in his Penhall/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP to take his 29th career victory and hold off Nobile, who finished in 6.713 at 205.69 in his Mount View Tire Dodge Avenger.

The victory moves Edwards to fourth place in the point standings and helps erase a slow start to the season, which included a DNQ at Pomona.

“We started off pretty slow and pretty bad for us really," the 2009 world champ said. "We regrouped and came in here with a new car and made some tremendous runs all weekend. It’s a total team effort. My guys did an awesome job all weekend. They gave me 110 percent and they never quit. I am so proud of them. It’s a great win and we want to try to build on this and try to improve as much as we can and keep trying to run good and make good decisions.”

Edwards, who was the event’s top qualifier, defeated Richard Freeman, Erica Enders and V. Gaines in the first three rounds. He said his car slowed a bit in the final and he was lucky to take the win over the Auto Club Road to the Future Award candidate.

“We were fortunate in the final because we made our worst run of the day,” Edwards said. “That Vincent Nobile is going to be quite a Pro Stock driver and he’s a super talent. He’s going to win some races and give us old guys a run for the money, I can tell you that.”

Pro Stock points leader Jason Line saw his early season winning streak end in the second round when he lost to Greg Stanfield. Line now leads Stanfield by 69 points.

Atlanta Dragway No Box and Summit ET event

JOHN NORRIS DOUBLES UP IN NO BOX AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY, WARD EARNS FIRST ATLANTA DRAGWAY WIN

(Commerce, GA – April 2) Today's action featured No Box and Summit ET racing classes.

In addition to sunshine and cool weather, Mother Nature still made her presence known today with very brisk winds. Several racers made it to multiple final rounds, including John Norris, who won both the 7.50 Index class and Open Comp. Bill Boomhower deserves an honorable mention for his day's work, finishing runner up in Open Comp and Pro. Chad Brewer had almost as good a day, finishing in the semi-final round in both Open Comp and Pro. Walt Mesik earned a good memory, recording a perfect run (.000 reaction time and running his elapsed time perfectly) during Super Pro eliminations with his '74 Vega.

"It's about time," exclaimed the jubilant 6.50 Index winner Matt Ward after defeating defending champion Stan Sinack in the 6.50 Index final. Ward used a near perfect .005 reaction time to take his '69 Camaro to his first Atlanta Dragway winner's circle with a 6.528 at 101.29mph. Sinack did not leave much room, turning in a slightly quicker, but second across the stripe, 6.517 at 104.19mph in a showroom quality '69 Dart. Lloyd Shanks Jr ('90 Beretta – Pendergrass, GA) and Chris Vanairsdale ('67 Chevelle – Buford, GA) finished in the semi-final round. Ward, a process engineer from Fairplay, SC, mentioned he had not won a race since 2007. He then added, "This one's special because my dad Jim Ward and father in law Wayne Allen were able to come. Also, I want to thank my wife Crystal for watching our daughter Ava."

Royston, GA racer John Norris kept his '86 Camaro quite warm during the last few rounds of 7.50 Index racing, using a better reaction time to take the final round 7.50 Index win stripe with a 7.55 at 85.09mph against Woody Bryant's Bowman, GA based '82 Camaro. Bryant was only 15 thousands of a second behind, running 7.540 at 88.02mph. Danny Towe ('70 Mustang – Lawrenceville, GA) was the semi-final finisher. Norris thanked Woody Bryant Automotive, Mayberry Tire and Wheel, Kenneth and Jimmy Mason and also the Atlanta Dragway personnel for a great track. The reason the 2009 7.50 Index and 2010 Open Comp champion Norris' race car got so warm was because he was competing in both the 7.50 Index and Open Comp Full Body classes.

In Open Comp Full Body, Norris again took the win stripe, barely defeating Bill Boomhower from Walhalla, SC. Norris had the dial in time set to 7.41 for Open Comp, and finished with a close 7.426 at 91.27mph. Boomhower's '65 Belvedere was hot on the trail, crossing .001 seconds later with a 6.135 at 108.57mph (6.09 dial). Chad Brewer ('73 Nova – Hickory Flat, GA) was the lone semi-finalist. Norris said, "I'm used to it now" (when asked about hot lapping the car in the later rounds of both Open Comp and 7.50 Index). He then added, "It worked out pretty good."

Ray LaCount from Hull, GA, who raced a venerable Vega wagon for many years, switched to a '98 Horton dragster four years ago. LaCount's new mount earned its third victory tonight, posting a 4.837 at 142.91 on his target time of 4.81 seconds. Jesse Young ('01 Undercover – Danielsville, GA) crossed the finish line .03 seconds behind LaCount with a slightly off-pace 4.826 at 137.05 (4.77 dial). After posting a perfect run earlier in competition, Walt Mesik ended a good day in the semi-final round with his Madison, GA based '74 Vega. LaCount, who enjoyed his last win over a year ago, thanked Jeff Voyles and "Monkey" Milford for all their help.

One of the "Wilson Gang" racers, Bruce Wilson, visited the Pro winner's circle tonight in his '70 Nova. The Tallapoosa, GA racer met Walhalla, SC racer Bill Boomhower's '65 Belvedere, which was in its second final round of the day. Although Boomhower's car was running nearly perfectly, Wilson's reaction time advantage was good enough for the win light, taking the big end stripe first by .06 seconds with a 6.71 at 95.92mph (6.67 dial). Boomhower carded a 6.12 at 110.65 (6.11 dial). For the second time of the day, Chad Brewer ('73 Nova – Hickory Flat, GA) had to settle for a semi-final finish.

"Jaybird" Rhyne added another Motorcycle victory to his win column, this time against Carl Gant ('91 Suzuki – Augusta, GA). Rhyne's '81 Kawasaki ran close to its mark with a 7.67 at 85.67mph (7.66 dial) against a much faster Gant, who went a bit off pace with a 6.04 at 109.92mph (5.97 dial). Paul Cavanaugh ('02 Hayabusa – Loganville, GA) and Scott Reynolds ('98 Buell S1 – Cartersville, GA) finished their day in the semi-final round. Rhyne had originally brought his 1100 to the track to race, but shifting problems sidelined the bike. He had to make another trip to his home in Athens, GA to get his "old reliable" '81 Kawasaki (that he has raced since 1993) on Saturday morning. Rhyne thanked fellow racer Tim Sutton for all his help over the weekend.

Cumming, GA racer Mel Abney won the 2010 Atlanta Dragway Sportsman championship in his '67 Camaro without winning a single race in 2010. Abney ended the drought tonight with a victory against Harold Wilson of Winder, GA. Abney's .007 reaction time gave him what he needed to slow his car to a 13.26 at 97.19mph (13.20 dial) and still take the finish line stripe .04 seconds ahead of Wilson's '74 Nova, which also ran a little off of its target (13.10 at 101.00 – 13.03 dial). Steven Wagner ('71 Duster – Jefferson, GA) and Mike Puckett ('90 Thunderbird Super Coupe – Norcross, GA) earned the semi-final berth. Abney's ignition advance had broken earlier in the day, and thanks to help from racing friends Jim Burford and Mike Puckett, he was able to compete. They did their job so well that Abney ended up defeating both of them during eliminations. "It was a tough one. I raced some really good racers," added Abney.

OVERFLOW CROWD WITNESSES HISTORY DURING SAN ANTONIO NITRO JAM FINALE

Overflow crowd watches records fall, winners crowned during San Antonio Nitro Jam finale

Lagana, Krafft, Manners, Bennett, Andras take home Nitro Jam hardware

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (April 2, 2011) – They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that goes double for the racing.

In front of one of the largest crowds to ever watch a race at San Antonio Raceway, records fell by the wayside and a number of new winners emerged from the shadows to lay claim to an IHRA Nitro Jam trophy and take home a victory during the finale of the San Antonio Nitro Jam Saturday night in Marion.

Among the winner’s of Saturday’s huge show were new champions Rick Krafft in Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car and Randal Andras in Nitro Harley, while Bobby Lagana Jr. picked up a win in Top Fuel and Chris Bennett (Nostalgia Fuel Altered) and Michael Manners (Pro Fuel) swept their respective categories in front of an overflow crowd.

Peter Gallen also made headlines during the two-night event, setting a new Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car record for elapsed time and speed at 5.744 seconds at 252.10 miles per hour.

In addition to the pro winners seven sportsman champions were also crowned on Saturday including Trent Wilson (Castroville, Texas) in Top Sportsman, Gordon Cole (Wells, Texas) in Top Dragster, Cody Blackmon (San Antonio, Texas) in Super Stock, David Latino (Donaldsonville, La.) in Stock, Tommy Phillips (Forney, Texas) in Quick Rod and Super Rod and Deborah Ridenhour (Kennedale, Texas) in Hot Rod.

All seven winners not only took home IHRA hardware, but also punched their ticket to the year-end Summit Racing Tournament of Champions in Virginia.

With the stands at capacity, all of the classes produced an incredible weekend of racing capped off with a huge finale Saturday night. And the man taking advantage of the opportunity the most was local favorite Michael Manners.

Manners, who currently resides in the Lone Star State, swept the Pro Fuel Dragster class over the weekend with a couple of hot laps in the blistering conditions to pick up his sixth and seventh career Nitro Jam victories and propel himself into first place in the standings.

“It was a wonderful night for our team. We were a little disappointed with the first round, we thought we would be faster, but we were able to turn that round in the final,” Manners said. “We were also a little surprised with the track and how good it was even with the heat. The crew did an excellent job out there and we were able to fire off good runs both nights.”

After downing Robin Samsel in Friday’s final, Manners returned on Saturday with more winning on his mind and wasted little time in reaching that goal, easily dispatching of Cherissa Smallwood in round one with a 5.578, 253.09 to set up yet another final round matchup between the “Shredder” and Bill Evans and the “Black Pearl” crew.
In the final Manners saved the best for last with the quickest lap of the weekend to down Evans and pick up his second win in as many nights. Manners ran a 5.288, 274.06 in the final as Evans sputtered off the line and never really got going.

"It was a shame those guys had trouble. We love running Evans and his bunch and you can never really count them out,” Manners said. “In the final we made a few small adjustments after round one and ran a darn good number. It would have been great to put those numbers up against those guys.”

In the consolation matchup Samsel defeated Smallwood.

In the other dragster class Bobby Lagana Jr. produced a weekend split with a pair of 300 mile per hour passes on Saturday under the hot Texas sun to pick up his sixth win of the year. In the final Lagana, who had never won at the San Antonio track, shook off the cobwebs and finally visited victory lane with a solid 4.707, 301.41 in the final as opponent Bruce Litton lost power right after launch and coasted to the runner-up finish.

Lagana’s other Saturday pass was a 4.859, 310.56, providing just enough consistency to come away a winner.

“We are excited to be back here. We have lots of memories here at San Antonio, unfortunately many of them are not good ones,” Lagana said. “Tonight, however, the track was phenomenal and the fan turnout was unbelievable. I have never seen this place with that many people. It was just such a big hit and we are glad to be a part of it.

“I am also glad we were able to go out there and put on a show. Even though we had some trouble on the last pass running the car a bit too hard, we were still able to put up some pretty good numbers and give the fans something to see.”

While the dragster classes offered up a few relatively uneventful rounds, such was not the case for the Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car category. Chaos ensued when one potential final round participant brushed a timing block thus disqualifying his run and another driver just barely earned his way into the final setting up an unexpected, yet very exciting final.

Rick Krafft in the Mike Faser owned “Chicago Fire” Corvette was the biggest winner of the chaotic first round as his potentially losing first round run turned into a win when opponent Mike McIntire nudged the centerline and made contact with one of the timing blocks. That one little error was all that was needed to propel the Indiana native into his first final of the year to face “Mr. Explosive” Mark Sanders.

In the final round it was Krafft who found just enough to light the win bulbs with a 5.958, 223.77 final round run to Sanders’ 6.058, 221.13 – a difference of just a few feet at the line.

“It was an absolutely incredible ending to the weekend for us. The first round we had all kinds of problems with the car, so as you can imagine we were a little shocked that we ended up in the finals,” Krafft said. “Once we learned that we made the finals the crew wanted to do a whole bunch of adjustments to keep up with Sanders, but we ultimately decided to leave it alone and see what the track would give us. Thankfully it was enough to get a win.”

In the consolation rounds Gallen defeated Mike Smith, Greg Jacobsmeyer won on a bye run and Jon Capps in the San Antonio-based “Jungle Jim” machine capped the unlucky weekend for McIntire with a win.

While Krafft was busy hoisting his third career Ironman, Friday winner Gallen had his own reasons to celebrate as he backed up and even improved on his record-setting numbers from the opening night to set the new Prostalgia record for elapsed time and speed at 5.770 seconds at 252.10 miles per hour.

Wrapping up the weekend were the two-wheel warriors of Nitro Harley as Randal Andras claimed his first career Ironman trophy with a win over Steve Dorn and Chris Bennett in the “Pure Heaven” Nostalgia Fuel Altered won for the fourth time in a row and sixth time this season in a victory over Jim Maroney.

To add to the excitement of Andras picking up his first Nitro Jam victory was the fact that he beat the current points leader and did it by just six feet at the line. Andras produced a very quick 6.496, 210.97 lap in the final, just nudging Dorn’s 6.568, 178.78 at the line. In the consolation round Mike Scott defeated Jay Turner.

Bennett wrapped up the pro winners with the quickest lap of the weekend, a 6.272, 222.86 in a victory over Maroney in the “Blind Faith” entry. Maroney ran a 6.565, 196.42 in the runner-up effort. In the Nostalgia Fuel Altered consolation Jason Richey beat Ron Maroney.

Other winners from the San Antonio Nitro Jam included Ryan McDonnell in Top ET, R.J. Doerr in Mod ET and Raleigh Scales in Junior Dragster. The event also featured appearances by the jet dragsters of Jill Canuso and Terry Rosberg, the “Airborne Express” wheelstander and the monster showdown between Grave Digger and Shockwave.

The two-night San Antonio Nitro Jam produced a huge weekend of racing and continued a string of sold out Nitro Jam events. Next up for the stars of the Nitro Jam tour is a trip north to Pennsylvania for the Pittsburgh Nitro Jam in the Steel City May 20-21.
