OSCEOLA DRAGWAY JOINS NHRA MEMBER TRACK LISTING

GLENDORA, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2010) - NHRA officials have announced that Osceola Dragway in Osceola, Ind., has switched to NHRA affiliation for the upcoming 2010 season. This is the first time that the quarter-mile facility, originally built in 1957, has operated under the NHRA banner.

Osceola Dragway will participate in the North Central Division’s NHRA Summit Racing Series culminating with the track sending a team of their season’s top qualifiers to the Summit Racing Series Finals at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, Sept. 17-19. Division champions from that event will advance to the Summit Racing Series National Championships held in conjunction with the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., Nov. 11-14.

The track will also offer racers the special National DRAGSTER Challenge, the Aerospace Components King of the Track, the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Challenge and NHRA Drags: Street Legal Style presented by AAA. The National DRAGSTER Challenge and the King of the Track events give local racers the opportunity to earn a coveted Wally trophy at their home track. And new this year the Jr. Drag Racing League Challenge will offer its own unique Wally.

“We are excited to be a part of NHRA and to offer our racers the opportunity to get to race for a Wally and to participate in the NHRA Summit Racing Series,” said Osceola Dragway race director Tim Medich.

For more information on Osceola Dragway and their 2010 schedule check out their website www.osceoladragway.com .

Nitro Jam Shifts Focus to Baton Rouge

Fans ready to party at Mardi Gras Nitro Jam

NORWALK, Ohio (February 5, 2010) – With one of the largest debut weekends in IHRA history in the books the newly redesigned Nitro Jam series now shifts its focus to one of the most exciting stops on its 10-event North American tour – State Capitol Raceway's Mardi Gras Nitro Jam.

Last year's event at State Capitol Raceway was an overwhelming success with a packed house both Saturday and Sunday watching Bruce Litton and many others hoist the coveted Ironman trophy. This year, after an incredible opening weekend at Palm Beach International Raceway in late January, even bigger things are expected when Nitro Jam rolls into town March 6-7.

"We couldn't be more excited to welcome Nitro Jam back to State Capitol Raceway. We had a huge turnout last year and with the new changes this season I think we will see even bigger things from this event," said State Capitol Raceway owner Lanny Lewis. "The IHRA always puts on an incredible show and with the new classes and changes fans are in for an incredible weekend of racing."

Fans packed Palm Beach International for 2010 Nitro Jam debut.

Kicking off the 2010 Mardi Gras Nitro Jam weekend will be two days of sportsman racing and the third opportunity of the new year for sportsman drivers to qualify for the Tournament of Champions. The new format is a dream come true for sportsman drivers and spectators alike as the seven classes making up the IHRA sportsman ranks run uninterrupted throughout the day leading up to the world's largest nitro thrill show Saturday and Sunday evening.

With sportsman racers owning the day, the stars of Nitro Jam will light up the night with nearly two dozen nitro-burning dragsters and funny cars, wild doorslammer racing, the "Cool Bus" wheelstanding school bus, the Super Shockwave jet truck and a spectacular fireworks display both Saturday and Sunday.

"Baton Rouge is a perfect example of how our new format works. We will continue to have our core classes, but we are able to add new and exciting classes to the schedule to enhance each individual event," said IHRA President Aaron Polburn. "Fans in Baton Rouge wanted doorslammer racing so we will give them some incredible door car action on top of our nitro show."

Outlaw Pro Modified racing will be the newest addition to the Nitro Jam schedule joining the stars of Top Fuel, Pro Fuel and Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car.

Outlaw Pro Modified racing will be the newest addition to the Mardi Gras Nitro Jam lineup.

While Top Fuel has always been a fan favorite with its four second, 320-mph runs, Nitro Jam's two newest nitro classes wowed fans at Palm Beach earlier in the year with flame-spewing side-by-side runs. IHRA's quickest and fastest sportsman racers will also be a part of the Nitro Jam experience as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster drivers compete in elimination rounds on Saturday followed by the Harland Sharp Elite 8 shootout between the top qualifiers in each class on Sunday.

Louisiana fans will also be treated to Fan Fest Saturday and Sunday prior to the start of the Nitro Jam show. Fan Fest was a huge hit in its debut earlier in the year as fans were able to interact with the series like never before.

Along with seeing the cars and stars of the series up close and personal, fans were also able to participate in the experience with a chance to sign Palm Beach winner Bobby Lagana's Top Fuel dragster, compete against others in a reaction time tournament, pick the pairings for the first round of professional eliminations and witness the first ever Nitro Earthquake as all of the nitro-burning vehicles on the property warmed up at the same time.

And State Capitol Raceway fans will receive an extra treat this season as the unique flair of Louisiana and the Mardi Gras spirit is incorporated into the weekend long festivities.

Everyone got in on the Mardi Gras spirit at last year's Nitro Jam event at State Capitol Raceway.

"Mardi Gras Nitro Jam is an event unlike any other on the Nitro Jam schedule. There is just something special about Louisiana and Mardi Gras that brings out the best in everyone and sets the backdrop for one heck of an event," said Polburn.

Tickets are on sale now for Mardi Gras Nitro Jam and can be purchased by calling 561-622-1400 or by clicking on the link below. Tickets are just $25 if purchased in advance and just $10 for children. Parking and an all-access pit pass are free with admission.

Don't miss your chance to be a part of this history-making event March 6-7 at State Capitol Raceway.

It's Frantic Ford Funny Car time for 2010

The long awaited debut of the Frantic Ford AA/Fuel Coupe Nostalgia Funny Car is right around the corner. Car should be ready for active competition up and down the eastern seaboard this coming May-June 2010.

The team of Freddy Frey, Bob Rosetty, Bobby Frey & "Big Al" Liebmann are set to bring you a "Blast from the Past" with the return of the legendary Frantic Ford AA/Funny Car.

Current plans call for Team Frantic to be appearing at tracks primarily on the East Coast with possible dates in the Midwest if additional funding becomes available.

The new Mustang II being built by Bob Rosetty at the Funny Car Farm will carry the same paint scheme that took the Frantic Ford to many victories back in the mid 1970's with the late, great Dodger Glenn at the controls (see picture ). Paint on the new car will be applied once again by the legendary Bob Gerdes of Circus Custom Paint. Lettering on the car will be handled by the talented brush strokes of Glen, another renowned east coast legend.

Look for a feature story on the "History of the Frantic Ford" in the next issue of Drag Racer Magazine (special thanks to Randy Fish (editor) and Tom "the Mongoo$e" McEwen).

Check out what's new with the Frantic Ford @ www.franticford.com.

The recreation of the Frantic Ford is dedicated to the memory of the late Paul R.(Dodger) Glenn.

More info on the passing of KS Pittman

Got a phone call last night from KS Pittman's wife, Lavonne. She informed us that his passing was peaceful and that she was close by.

There will be a memorial in Springfield and then KS will be buried in Texas, along side his brothers Paul and Silas.

KS was a dear friend. He befriended me and Joe when we first came to California and didn't know many people, having us to dinner at his home on several occasions.

What a great ambassador he was for drag racing. He always had a smile on his face and I can't ever remember him saying a bad word about anyone.

I am enclosing Lavonne's address for anyone who might wish to convey their sympathies.

GARLITS TO HOST THE AMERICAN EAST COAST LAUNCH OF CRAZY HORSES

The official East Coast launch of Crazy Horses – the history of British drag racing, is at the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing, Ocala Florida. With books being available via the museum gift shop, it will take place over March 6th and 7th, the weekend before the Gatornationals, with book signing sessions held at 2.30pm on both days. Those of you who already have Crazy Horses, bring your copy along and get it signed.

The book’s author Brian Taylor will be there, joining Don Garlits and reigning FIA European Top Fuel Dragster Champion Andy Carter. Don has raced in the UK three times – 1964, 1976 and 1977. But it is 1964 that he most fondly remembers. These were the pioneering years when Sydney Allard organised American teams to demonstrate the sport to a British audience only just coming to terms with what dragsters were. Most had never heard one until that time and they were blown away by the show put on by the American team at airfields throughout the country.

Don says, “When Brian asked me to write the Foreword to Crazy Horses I was really pleased to say yes because I believe it is most important to record the sequence of events that led to today’s European drag racing scene, before too much time has passed by. That’s why I’m such a supporter of the Project 1320 team recording the sport’s American history – as told by those that were there. We chose March 6th and 7th for the book’s East Coast launch because reigning FIA European Top Fuel Dragster Champion Andy Carter will also be at the museum with his car that I’m proud to be supporting. So over the same two days we will have the history of British drag racing represented by the launch of Crazy Horses and today’s top European Andy Carter – quite a weekend”.

Andy Carter says, “I feel so honoured to be carrying the colours of Big Daddy Don Garlits on my car. I’m looking forward to talking to visitors and it’s great that Crazy Horses is being launched at Don’s museum over the same weekend. I started drag racing in the 1980s and some of my proudest moments are covered by the book. A truly nostalgic weekend.”

Author Brian Taylor says, “Having Don Garlits write the Foreword to Crazy Horses has been a great privilege for me and I’m truly looking forward to the weekend. Don has been an inspiration to so many people all over the world and his approach to preserving the sport’s history was one of the motivating factors behind the formation of the Allard Chrysler Action Group to restore Sydney Allard’s 1961 Allard Chrysler dragster. This car last ran at Blackbushe in 1964, the year that Don first raced in the UK. So as well as signing some books I will be pleased to update folks on how this important project is progressing”.

The BDR&HRA Race Director during the 1970’s was Syd McDonald and he is joining us for the signings. Other drag racing personalities attending will be announced during the next few weeks. The Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing is at 13700 SW 16th Avenue, Ocala, Florida 34473. Tel (877) 271-3278. Any Europeans in Florida over that weekend please contact brian@petrolhead.vianw.co.uk

British Drag Racing Hall of Fame inductees announced

After a very successful race season in 2009 racers, officials and their guests gathered in Northampton, England on 6th February for the annual Santa Pod Racers Club / Avon Park International Racing Association dinner and dance which also incorporate trophy presentations. Since its inception the announcement of the inductees into the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame has become a major and eagerly awaited part of this event each year.

The British Drag Racing Hall of Fame selection panel spent many hours debating the merits of this year’s nominations before deciding on the final four British inductees and one overseas inductee. The panel was in agreement the process does not get any easier as there are so many people who fit the criteria for induction, which makes the award even more prestigious for those that are inducted each year.

In association with US Automotive, the inductees for the 2009 BDRHoF are as follows:

Alan O’Connor

After racing his “Rocky II” Ford Zephyr for 4 years Al O’Connor debuted his Chevy powered Ford pop “Al’s Gasser” in 1974 which was an instant crowd favourite with its wild runs and wheels up launches taking many wins. After a crash in 1978 a new lower and quicker Gasser appeared and raced successfully in Super Gas in the 80s including a year touring the States. The ‘Gasser’ is still entertaining the crowds to this day!

Harold Bull

“King” Harold Bull built his well known Mini engine “Stripduster” slingshot in 1965 and developed it over the next 7 years adding nitro, injection, supercharger, direct drive and a longer frame and the times went from mid 16s at 80mph to low 9s at over 150mph. Harold teamed up with racers both here and abroad and when Harold retired in 1974, he’d won over 40 trophies and broken several world and strip records in England, Germany and Sweden.

Peter & Erica Bartlett

Peter Bartlett’s part in British Drag Racing History goes back to 1960 when he was a member of the “Highwaymen Hot Rod Club”. He became the first Treasurer of the BHRA and later the BDR&HRA. He was joined by his wife Erica in 1970 who worked from home as General Secretary until 1980 when they both retired. Peter also raced his ’57 Chevy at the 1964 Big Go and later that yet push-started the America Dragsters at the Dragfests.

Krister Johansson (overseas)

Krister Johansson first visited Santa pod in 1972 with a Street Dodge and went home with the trophy. In 1977 he moved up to Pro Comp with an Injected Nitro Dragster and took many wins and the European Championship in 1979. In 1982 he switched to Blown Alcohol and took the win at the 1989 Supernationals. 2003 saw Krister back after a long layoff running Injected Nitro again and at the 2006 Euro Finals ran a 262mph speed record

Geof Hauser

Geof Hauser first visited Santa Pod in 1969. By the mid 70’s he was working on Clive Skilton’s Fuel cars. And later, together with his then wife raced a production Dodge Challenger, the ex-Paul Rossi Dodge which achieved many wins in Top Modified and Super Gas. Geof founded Hauser Race Cars in 1983 and initially raced in Super Gas then moved up to Pro Mod using a 500” Mopar engine and recorded the first 7sec ET from a British doorslammer in the UK. He was heavily involved in introducing the Junior Dragster class to the country.

Each Inductee receives a “Bootsie” - a bespoke BDRHoF trophy containing a glass Hologram of British drag racing legend, Allan ‘Bootsie’ Herridge. Inductees also receive an enamel lapel pin, identifying them as a member of the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame also has its own dedicated website at www.britishdragracinghof.co.uk.

For the record, eligibility for induction into the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame extends to any person who has driven, owned, designed, built, maintained, prepared, promoted, officiated, supported or taken part in any capacity connected with British Drag Racing.

A centerpiece of the events will be “NHRA Unleashed Center Stage.” Strategically located in the middle of all the action, a center stage will be set up to provide a venue for the television hosts to interview the drag racing stars and their families, car owners, manufacturers of automotive products and of course spectators attending the event.

Where do we go from here? This isn't where we intended to be. We had it all, you believed in me I believed in you. Certainty's disappeared, what do we do for our dream to survive? How do we keep all our passions alive, as we used to do? Have I said to much? I have nothing more I can say to you. All you need to know is ...that every word is true!

Support Project 1320, we need to keep the dream alive.

Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association releases 2010 schedule

Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association releases 2010 schedule, adds Super Chevy and NHRA Unleashed to the series.

01-18-2010 Huntington, NY – The NEOPM’s 2010 season is set with 9 events for 2010 starting with Napa Day at the Drags May 1st at Virginia Motorsports Park. The NEOPM has doubled its quarter mile pro mod racing program from 2009, added a new series name, “1320 Pro Mod Warrior Series”, and added many new sponsors in what will be one of the best quarter mile pro mod racing series in the country.

We will be running at some of the fastest facilities in the country, such as Maryland International Raceway, Maple Grove, Atco Raceway, Virginia Motorsports Park, Capitol Raceway, and National Trails Raceway.

We added the new and improved Super Chevy Show at Maple and the new NHRA Unleashed Series event developed by the producers of the popular drag racing show Pinks, Stephen Pullin and Jack Schaeffer at National Trail Raceway, which will add the excitement of quarter mile pro mods to these events. We have worked very closely with Roger Burgess of Pro Care RX and the NHRA to help build legal Pro Mod racing in the country and to give these racers a place to compete. Also see the NEOPM’s and the newly formed MMPSA at our 2nd event at Maryland International Raceway’s Mountain Motor Nationals May 15th.

We added associate sponsors T&F Racing, VP Race Fuels, Star Cab Co., dtpromod.com, Pullin/Plummer Racing, and Advanced Racewear. Returning associate sponsors Richards Automotive, Gary Courtier Home Improvements, American Racing Headers, Western Beef, Performance AutoCrafters, CCI Constructors, Timothy O’Hare Custom Homes, Speedtech, WD4ME.com, Pearl River Automotive, and Amato/Cannonball/ModZilla Racing. There are many other deals in the works, and we will make announcements when they are finalized.

Also in 2010, look to see many grudge runs during qualifying throughout the year, as many of the rivalries from last year heat up as the season’s first event approaches. The NEOPM members are friends and family Monday thru Friday, but when racing on Saturday arrives, competition and rivalries begin. See team rivalries such as Tommy Gray vs. Frank Patille, Pat Musi vs. Vinnie Budano, Jeff Rogers vs. Marc Hayes, and many more.

See you at the races……
