IHRA SUMMIT PRO-AM TOUR TO FEATURE INCREASED PAYOUTS, MORE EXCLUSIVITY IN 2013

Summit Racing Equipment, IHRA increase Pro-Am Tour prestige by adding more cash, more exclusivity
Summit Pro-Am Tour now the only path to the Tournament of Champions

NORWALK, Ohio (December 27, 2012) – The very backbone of the International Hot Rod Association is the sportsman racer. And nowhere are those racers featured more prominently than within the battleground of the Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL.

Already one of the most prestigious programs within the IHRA, thanks to Summit Racing Equipment who have renewed their commitment to sportsman racers by signing a multiyear deal to return as sponsor of the program, the Pro-Am Tour just got a whole lot more exciting.

In 2013 the IHRA and Summit Racing Equipment are adding more cash and more exclusivity to the program by increasing the payout to win a Pro-Am championship, adding payout through third place in each division and making the Pro-Am Tour the only path through which to earn a berth in the Summit Racing Equipment Tournament of Champions presented by AMSOIL.

Beginning next season the only way a driver can earn a spot in the Tournament of Champions is by finishing in the top three in their respective division on the Summit Pro-Am Tour. Individual race winners will no longer earn an automatic tournament bid, instead focusing all championship aspirations on those racers that chase points on the Pro-Am Tour and enjoy season-long success essentially making every Pro-Am event a TOC qualifier.

Most all Nitro Jam national events will continue to feature double Pro-Ams with increased contingency, payout and a national event Ironman available on the final day of Nitro Jam, but only those chasing points on the Pro-Am Tour will be eligible for the year-end championship tournament. All divisions will continue to feature double Pro-Ams with the exception of the Raiders Division, however a few races within that division will experiment with the extremely popular double format.

To further enhance the prestige of the tour each Pro-Am champion will receive an increased payout of $2,000. Champions will also receive an IHRA Ironman and an IHRA Gold Card. Pro-Am championship runners-up will continue to receive $500, while drivers that finish in third place in their division will now receive $250. All drivers that finish in the top three will also earn a ticket to the Summit Racing Equipment World Finals to compete for the World Championship.

"Since its inception over a decade ago the Summit Pro-Am Tour has grown into our preeminent sportsman championship series," said IHRA President Aaron Polburn. "We have seen it grow from a regional racing series to a program that has multiple divisions covering nearly every corner of North America. Next year we want to continue to add even more benefit to the racers that run the series by increasing payouts and making it the exclusive path to the Tournament of Champions.

"We are excited about the changes to the series and we think these changes will benefit our Pro-Am racers and add even more incentive for new racers to find out what this program is really all about."

All other Pro-Am rules and guidelines will continue to be in effect. For more information on the 2013 Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL visit www.ihra.com/SummitProAmTour.

IHRA ANNOUNCES MAJOR CHANGES TO SUMMIT TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

IHRA announces major changes to Tournament of Champions
Summit TOC field narrowed to include only the year's best drivers

NORWALK, Ohio (December 27, 2012) – Only the best of the best will participate in the 2013 Summit Racing Equipment Tournament of Champions presented by AMSOIL. That is because beginning next season the IHRA will be narrowing the field to only include the top drivers on the prestigious Summit Pro-Am Tour making the tournament field a true cross-section of the best IHRA racers from across North America.

While past versions of the IHRA's year-end championship tournament have included a collection of special event and big race winners in addition to Summit Pro-Am Tour regulars, beginning in 2013 the Summit Tournament of Champions will only be made up of drivers competing on the Pro-Am Tour recognizing year-round success at a multitude of different tracks.

And the entire program will be highlighted by a renewed commitment to sportsman drag racing as sponsor Summit Racing Equipment recently signed a multiyear deal to return as sponsor of the program.

Beginning next season the only way a driver can earn a spot in the Tournament of Champions is by finishing in the top three in their respective division on the Summit Pro-Am Tour. Single race winners will no longer earn an automatic tournament bid, instead focusing all championship aspirations on those racers that chase points on the Pro-Am Tour and enjoy season-long success.

To further reward drivers that compete on the Summit Pro-Am Tour, Pro-Am champions will receive an increased payout and payouts will be expanded to include drivers that finish in third place in their respective division.

While automatic, one race bids have been eliminated, competition at Nitro Jams will continue to be an important part of the formula as most all Nitro Jams in 2013 will double as a Summit Pro-Am weekend. But instead of one race qualifiers, essentially all Pro-Am races will act as a chance to qualify for the Tournament of Champions. Sportsman competitors that win on the final night of Nitro Jam will also receive an increased payout, contingency and a national event Ironman.

The narrowed tournament field, which determines the World Champion through 10th place in each of the IHRA's seven touring classes, will award $10,000 to the World Champion in addition to a special edition Ironman and more and will be contested at the Summit Racing Equipment World Finals at Memphis International Raceway. Championship runners-up through fifth place will continue to receive a cash prize, while drivers finishing sixth through 10th in the world will receive a gift card courtesy of Summit Racing Equipment. Visit www.ihra.com for complete Tournament of Champions payout information.

The new Tournament of Champions structure will continue to generate a first round ladder based on drivers that show up to compete at the IHRA World Finals and each class ladder will be generated via reaction time from the final qualifying time prior to the race.

A driver may compete in the Summit Tournament of Champions in a maximum of two different classes, but may not drive the same car in two classes during the race.

Once the field is set the best drivers in Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Super Stock, Stock, Quick Rod, Super Rod and Hot Rod will go head-to-head against their peers with the final seven drivers left standing being named an IHRA World Champion.

"When we first designed the Tournament of Champions the idea was to reward all those drivers that had a good year by giving everyone, from the traveling pro to the guy that can only race regionally, an equal opportunity to chase a World Championship," said IHRA President Aaron Polburn. "While the TOC has served that function well by giving us a diverse group of champions each year, we wanted to take it a step further in 2013 by limiting the field to only those that compete on the Pro-Am Tour.

"In researching the tournament field over the past few years we found that most drivers that qualify for the tournament are chasing Pro-Am points anyway, so we took the next logical step by narrowing the field to only include those that do well throughout the season as oppose to someone who does well at one race.

"With this new format we are rewarding those that compete throughout the year on the Pro-Am Tour while still giving those drivers that can't travel an equal shot at competing for a championship."

All other Tournament of Champions rules and guidelines will continue to be in effect. For more information on the 2013 Summit Racing Equipment Tournament of Champions presented by AMSOIL visit www.ihra.com/TournamentofChampions.

JOHN FORCE RACING'S MIKE NEFF STANDS OUT DURING SEASON OF GIVING

Mike Neff and Pastor Bill Wilson at the John Force Racing shop in Brownsburg, Ind.

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (December 18, 2012) - Mike Neff has had a lot on his plate this off-season; spending time with his children, Chase and Chloe, and riding herd over his Castrol GTX Funny Car team to prepare for the Mello Yello NHRA Drag Racing series in 2013, but even an oversized work load can’t stop him from continuing to be involved in one of the greatest charities for children around the world, Metro Ministries.

Metro Ministries is a global Christian, non-profit organization dedicated to serving inner-city children throughout New York City and various urban centers around the world. Metro Ministries serves nearly 100,000 children each week with after school programs, Sunday school services, child sponsorship, special programs and personal home visits.

Neff recently joined Pastor Bill Wilson, founder of Metro Ministries, for the annual “Operation Holiday Hope” television special, which aired live on the LeSea Broadcasting Network.

Pastor Bill Wilson and Neff have been personal friends for over two years. Last year, Neff and John Force Racing hosted several children that Metro Ministries serves at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ for an experience they will not soon forget.

“I met Pastor Bill Wilson a number of years ago and I have been involved with Metro Ministries since then. Englishtown was the first time we have hosted a big group of kids and it was amazing. I have to thank Castrol and Lori Anne Gola for going the extra mile with goodie bags and the tickets. They are a great sponsor and to help these kids like that means a lot,” said Neff.
For only a $10 gift to “Operation Holiday Hope” Metro Ministries provides a Christmas gift to over 100,000 needy children around the world including inner-city kids in New York City.

“It puts a lot in perspective when you talk with the kids, some who might never have had a chance to leave the city, and see that they are seeing a whole new world. You hope that this inspires them and encourages them to keep being good kids. It was an awesome experience for me personally and I feel lucky to have been able to help Metro Ministries. Being able to go and participate in the telethon was also a huge honor. These kids around the world need to know that they are loved and someone is thinking of them,” he added.

Donations are still being accepted throughout the holidays for Operation Holiday Hope at www.operationholidayhope.org

Founded by Pastor Bill Wilson in 1980, Metro World Child has worked to rescue hurting children and offer a message of salvation and love that encourages them to stay in school and away from gangs and other destructive or criminal behaviors so common in inner-city environments. Metro meets both spiritual and physical needs through long-term one-on-one relationships, mentorship, child sponsorship and visitation.

IHRA PRESIDENT AARON POLBURN NAMED 2012 MIKE AIELLO AWARD RECIPIENT

IHRA President Aaron Polburn named
2012 Mike Aiello Award recipient

By Susan Wade

NORWALK, Ohio (December 17, 2012) – Michael J. Fox has nothing on Aaron Polburn. Back in mid-2010, International Hot Rod Association President Polburn never showed any public angst when doctors told him he has Parkinson's disease.

Instead he approached what he called his "next great adventure" with grace and his trademark sense of humor.

"Although doctors are about 95 percent sure, that gives me a solid 5 percent chance of them being wrong. It's kind of like when we face a 90 percent chance of rain at a Nitro Jam event. I am the guy who is convinced that gives us a 10 percent chance of sunshine," he wrote in his popular back-page column "The Last Word" in Drag Review Magazine's July 2010 issue.

"I am the most blessed guy on earth. I look at this as my next great adventure and I truly mean that," Polburn wrote. "I will do whatever it takes to put the odds in my favor. . . . I will do it with great attitude and humor. This is not a death sentence. This is a lifestyle change although I am convinced it is not going to change that much."

IHRA President Aaron Polburn after receiving the 2012 Mike Aiello Award

It hasn't, really.

For that, Competition Plus Magazine presented Polburn the 2012 Mike Aiello Award and trophy Friday, December 14 at the IHRA headquarters at Norwalk, Ohio.

Brian Wood, editorial director of the IHRA's Drag Review Magazine and a close friend of Aiello, made the presentation to Polburn, the first sanctioning-body President and second from the IHRA ranks to receive the award.

IHRA Champion Michael Beard was honored in 2010 for racing and continuing his commitments as correspondent for Drag Review Magazine while battling Bell's palsy, a non-life-threatening, temporary facial paralysis that has no known cause or cure.

Past recipients include John Medlen, Tim Wilkerson, Mike Edwards, and Jack Beckman.

The Mike Aiello Award, referred to by the media as "The Spirit of Drag Racing Award," honors determination and the spirit to persevere and remain positive in spite of obstacles.

It remembers Aiello, a longtime drag racing fan and former Pro Stock crew member for former IHRA and NHRA racer Jerry Yeoman, who spent his final years confined to a wheelchair after a workplace injury. Despite physical hardship and severe mobility limitations, he not only many attended drag races but made dozens of friends among drivers, crew members, and media with his positive outlook and unselfish behavior.

Aiello, an acquaintance of Polburn, passed away December 29, 2006, at age 39 at Santa Monica, Calif.

"I'm overwhelmed. I'm humbled. I'm speechless," Polburn said after the surprise presentation. He said he was honored to be the latest in the group of quality individuals to have received the award, saying he "nearly choked up" during the presentation.

"You've got me shaking, and it has nothing to do with the Parkinson's," he joked.

As for the status of his health, Polburn said Friday, "I have good days and I have great days. 'Bad days' doesn't even figure into it. I really don't think about it that much."

Because Polburn's doctors want him to avoid car fumes, smoke, and other pollutants -- and because travel simply depletes his energy -- Polburn doesn't attend as many races these days.

Still, he calls his struggle with the illness "this little Parkinson's irritation" and "my adventure in Parkinson's Land." And the previously well-traveled Polburn reasoned that a trip to the Caribbean -- which he completed recently -- was in order: "I got to thinking that if my hard-wiring was going to go on the fritz, why not have it whacked out in Aruba? I mean, if I am going to slow down to a crawl, why not do it on one of the most spectacular beaches in the world within shouting distance of the Cruzan Rum manufacturing facility?"

He also wrote: "Now I have a great excuse when people think my decision making was marred from a lack of brain cells. I should be able to parlay the occasional tremor into a job hand-mixing martinis and margaritas. The only concern is that I may lose home-court advantage playing P-I-G and I have to watch Skooter [IHRA executive Peaco] launch 30-foot nothing-but-net shots. Now that would honk me off. To the Anti Aaron Fan Club I am sorry to report that I am not going anywhere.

"Nothing changes. If I ever thought I was hindering the progress of IHRA and Nitro Jam I would be the first to bow out. Just look at me as a giant Weeble. I may occasionally wobble . . . But I'll never fall down. Attitude is everything."

Polburn has called his DRM / "The Last Word" column "my often oddball observations on racing and the world in general." Among the thousands of tales he has shared are two humorous thoughts:

"After cleaning up a 60-foot-tall tree that came down in a severe thunderstorm, I would advocate a law banning anyone with Parkinson's from using a chain saw.

"I was walking from the parking lot to the office and not having a real good balance day. I was approached by some Norwalk punk who said, 'Why don't you learn how to walk?' I was infuriated so I fired back, 'Why don't you learn how to run (insert vulgarity here).' I took off after him swinging my Ohio State lunch box like some sort of war club. Thank God the punk kept running, because I would have been forced to hit him with a soup bowl. Final Score - Weeble 1, Punk 0."

So, Polburn has said, "There is nothing I can't do. I just do it a lot slower and need a bit more recovery time."

That's something Mike Aiello also said.
