Drag Strip Girl comes full circle
When Mendy Fry graduated from Santa Rosa High in 1987, she was the school's undisputed horse power queen. Her striking dark features, long brunette hair and movie-star looks prompted some to ask why she wasn't homecoming queen but she wasn't interested in any popularity contests. She just wanted to go fast. Racing and working on cars was all she knew and she was damn good at it.

The Brits cleaned up!
This weekend's US v UK v Canada World Street Race at No Problem Raceway turned into a UK benefit as the UK took the team win; the UK's Steve Pateman took the individual win in an all-UK final; the top two qualifiers, Low ET and high speed were taken by UK racers; and the UK team took just about every other prize apart from quickest sixty-foot time and Best Wheelie. WSR organiser and racer Andy Frost told Eurodragster.com just how all of that felt.

After an avalanche of opposition from neighborhood groups, the city's Noise Review Board on Wednesday denied a request from Portland International Raceway for a variance that would allow regional drag racing at the track this summer. In denying the track a 'no limit' variance for regional drag races in August, the board cited several factors, including the potential for dangerous noise levels and a lack of community outreach by the raceway.

Flight of the Commuter
Dateline 1970: The British record-breaking land speed runs of The Commuter, Britain's first nitro-guzzling Fuel Dragster, which topped a remarkable 260mph over the flying kilometre, seem implausible. Even more amazing to contemplate is the idea that a hastily modified dragster could wrest the British record from Sir Malcolm Campbell's purpose-built Bluebird -- and then retain it for some 30-plus years.
